Waves Sizzle at Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta By Marilyn Kali

One to four-foot waves turned the 65th Annual Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta into a surf fest that tested the skills of veteran steersmen and their paddlers from the 17 Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association clubs entered in the July 4th contest.

With thousands of paddlers and their families and tourists crowded on busy Waikiki Beach to watch, the surf provided a number of huli, swampings and thrilling rides with fractions of a second determining the winners.

There were winners in all lanes across the course, but the major surf was in lanes 1, 2 and 3, where getting out through the breaking surf was often a problem. Starters often waited for a set to subside before giving the green flag.

Steersmen jockeyed for position to get onto waves and used all their strength to keep the canoe on the wave. For a paddler, the thrill of catching a wave and riding it to the finish line can't be measured.

With three or four canoes on the same wave, only the judges could determine the winners of some of the races from their perch high on a Hilton Hawaiian Village hotel room balcony.

The eventual winner of the regatta was Lanikai Canoe Club with 86 points, followed by Outrigger with 75. Going into the final five races of the day, Outrigger was ahead by two points. Despite a win by the Mixed Masters 55, Outrigger had a huli in the Open Four Women, and didn't qualify crews in the other three races, which gave the regatta victory to Lanikai.

Page 2

In the youth division, Lanikai also took home the Bob Fischer Trophy with 17 points, followed by Outrigger with 16 and Hui Nalu with 15.

Outrigger victories came in the Freshmen Women, Junior Men, Masters Women 55 and 60, and the Mixed 55s.

Masters events in the Macfarlane were introduced in 1978 with events for women over 35 and women over 45. Gerri Pedesky noted that she had paddled for 30 years as a master, senior master and golden master. Her crew this year, the Women 55, were victorious. She also won gold in 1980, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2001, and 2002.

Head regatta coach Kehau Kali noted Outrigger was moving in the right direction towards the Oahu and State championships. "We f inished third in the first four regattas, and moved up to second place at the Macfarlane. We had to scratch lot s of races in June regattas. By the time we get to Oahus and States, we should be ready," she said.

The OHCRA championships were held on July 22 at Keehi Lagoon and the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association championship will be held on August 4 at Hanalei, Kauai. OCC hopes to qual ify most of its crews for states.

Distance season gets underway in mid-August with Outrigger hosting the Dad Center Long Distance Race for Women on August 26.
