IRDA Sustainability

Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) invited WAVES lifestyle Magazine and WAVES (NgO) alongside other NgOs to have a roundtable discussion regarding the sustainability of Iskandar Malaysia and working the big picture on how to collaborate NgOs and corporations to work towards a common goal.

The dialogues unanimously agreed upon the change of the Johorian mindset and working together to break down the dogma that has constricted progress thus far. A quick survey at the discussion showed that all attendees believed that sustainability is a personal concern, whereas 94% felt that there is a need to relook their organisation’s practice to ensure ‘Sustainability’ is present, while only 6% responded neutral. The assembly agreed that relevant organisations needed to promote racial integration, propagate conservation and further encourage community participation.

This Chinese New Year, we enter the Year of the Dragon and you may be eager to know how your luck will be in 2012 when compared to previous years. WAVES lifestyle uses the Chinese Astrology’s Five Elements (Metal, Water,

Wood, Fire and Earth) theory to explain your fortune in 2012. Check out your horoscopes below!

Chinese New YearYear of the

DRAGONThe Rat’s fortune in 2012 is fair. Your 2012 shouldn’t have a very exciting result or a very sad ending. Rat is a Water Sign, while Dragon contains Earth, Water and Wood. The Dragon is also known as the Water Dam. It is said that when Rat Water enters the Dragon Water Dam, the water will stop and stay inside. So you won’t see outstanding achievement in the Dragon year, but it doesn’t mean that you will have trouble in career, money or love. It only means you might get less returns than expected even if you put more effort. As long as you don’t aim too high, you will be satisfied.

Dragon and Rabbit can get along together outwardly. Dragon knows how to accommodate itself to Rabbit. Therefore, you will have good social or business relationship in 2012. However, you could have some arguments behind the scenes. Family relationships are poor. In Chinese astrology, Rabbit contains Wood and Dragon contains Earth. Wood and Earth are opposite elements. They fight each other. It’s not a good sign that Rabbit offends the year of Dragon. Dragon will bring people to attack Rabbit. luckily, there is a lucky Sun Star appearing in 2012. Therefore, when Rabbit is in trouble, some one will stand up to help.

There is taboo when a Dragon meets another Dragon from the yearly cycle. Imagine passing by a town with a local tyrant. If you keep quiet, then there will be a safe passing, but if you want to mess with or challenge the tyrant, then there will be trouble during the journey. Also, more than one malignant stars arrive to Dragons in 2012. Therefore, friendship, love relationship, money management or job competition might have some some impact. You shouldn’t neglect your health and safety. In short, try not to make any mistakes. Do not expect any major prosperity in year of Dragon.

Snake is also known as little Dragon. It is said that a Dragon on the ground becomes a Snake, and a big flying Snake becomes a Dragon. In general, you should have good luck in the Dragon year. In Chinese astrology, Dragon contains Earth, Snake contains Fire. Fire can produce Earth. That means Snake becomes weak when Dragon is around. 2012 is a year for Dragon to show itself off. You need to act as a supporting character. Otherwise, you might humiliate yourself.

The Ox’s social relationships will have some problems in 2012. However, your fortune in the Dragon year is just fine. Don’t expect anything great to happen, in fact, you might encounter some trouble in career development or financial investment. Luckily, it’s possible that an unexpected helper will appear to help you to remove the obstacle. The best way to keep from trouble is to prevent yourself from stepping into the troubled corners. As long as you work hard without complaints and make sure there is no conflict, you will have a smooth 2012.

The Tiger is a fierce animal on the ground, while the Dragon is a powerful creature from the sky. When they meet, they will fight violently. Tiger contains Wood and Dragon contains Earth. Wood and Earth are opposite elements; they have a fighting relationship. You will have a busy, noisy and a challenging Dragon year. Control your temper and avoid unnecessary dispute. luck with money is up and down; therefore try not to take up risky investments. For business, opportunities are out of town; traveling will increase during the Dragon year. However, do not ignore your health and safety when away from home.

Horses can run very fast, but without a guide on its back, a Horse doesn’t know where to go. The Dragon can be a good guide for the Horse. In general, you should have good luck in career and money in 2012. Dragon contains Earth and Horse contains Fire. They can get along and won’t fight each other. However, you will become weak when Dragon is around. 2012 is a year for Dragon to show itself off. You need to act as a supporting character. You will do well in the year of Dragon by following Dragon’s wisdom and guidance. There is an unlucky Star showing in health area - a sign of injury. Therefore, pay attention to safety at work, drive carefully and avoid conflict with strangers. A lucky star related to money may arrive.

In Chinese astrology, Dragon contains Earth and so does Sheep. They are the same kind; there is no conflict between Dragon and Sheep. There are more lucky Stars than unlucky Stars. That means you will have good year in 2012. Sheep are gentle, elegant and shy animals. In the Dragon year, your friends and mentors will show care and consideration to you. Therefore, your social relationship, career opportunity and money luck will be good. You won’t gain too much improvement in love, because Dragon is the lonely Star to people in the Sheep sign.

In Chinese astrology, Dragon contains Earth while Monkey contains mainly Metal. Earth is the Mother Element of Metal. Earth Dragon can cover and protect Metal Monkey. When Monkey meets Dragon, they have some relationship. Therefore, you will have very good luck in 2012 and will have good relationships, career opportunities, money luck and love in the Dragon year. The only unlucky sign is the White Tiger Star that appears in health area. As long as you take care your body well, the year of Dragon will be a wonderful year for you.

HORSE ROOSTER

GOATDOG

MONKEY PIG

Roosters and Dragons have a relationship of attraction. According to Chinese astrology, Dragon contains Earth and Rooster contains Metal. Earth is the Mother Element of Metal. Earth Dragon can cover and protect Metal Rooster. Therefore 2012 will be a wonderful year for you. Social activities, career opportunity, money luck and love are all good. You can expect the prosperity of wealth, power of career, credit of reputation and happiness of love coming towards your way. However, pay attention to safety and health to prevent from accidents happening in the 2012 year of the Dragon.

The Dog and Dragon have a fighting relationship. If the Dog wants to challenge the Dragon in the year of 2012, then the Dog will invite lots of trouble to itself. Since Dog and Dragon cannot get along well, you cannot get any advantage from Dragon. Therefore, 2012 is not a good year for you. Also, there are a couple of unlucky Stars coming to you. Both health and money luck are not looking good either. You need to maintain your focus to avoid any disasters that may happen because of neglect.

Pig is a lucky animal in the Chinese horoscope. Pigs will become smarter this Dragon year. The general luck for you is fair in 2012. You will have a little career pressure. The money luck is up and down. love is pretty good. There are a couple of lucky Stars coming towards you. When you encounter difficulties, obstacles or even misfortune, keep your optimistic, enterprising and positive mind and someone will appear to help you to overcome trouble. It’s hard for Dragon to have any romantic relationship with other animal, except the Pig. If you want to look for a closer love relationship, then the Dragon year is the time to try.

An Interview with Bollywood Veteran Actress

Neena KulkarniNeena Kulkarni has acted in numerous Hindi films such as Sahi Dhande Galat Bande (2011), Rann (2010), Guru (2007), Paheli (2005), Hungama (2003) and many others. She is a fine actress who is able to pull off her role with lots of character and charm and lives by the motto that 'Acting is about good characterisation'. Priya Manikam travelled across the globe to speak to her in Bollywood city, Mumbai, India.

directors and writers. I was in the same group alongside fine actors such as Nana Patekar and Naseeruddin Shah and when my husband passed away, family responsibilities became utmost important and I turned to films as a career. I worked on many television serials as well and it is really difficult to pick which genre I like the most. It was always wondering what I wanted to do at that time and television was a good quick business. As for films, I always pick and choose the ones with good roles or characters which interest me and the set up of the film is also really important to me.

You have always been typecasted into motherly roles. Do you ever wish to play a different role? I do not feel I am typecasted at all, as I work in many different languages which have different roles. In Hindi films for instance, I played a wife role to Amitabh Bachchan in “Rann” and in Shah Rukh Khan’s “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (PBDHH)” I did not play a mother role. Even in my current serial titled “Meri Maa (My Mother)” I play a dominating matriarch role which has both negative and positive sides to it. To me, I am a character actress who likes to explore each role as there are a lot of shades to the role one is cast in.

What is your most memorable role?In Marathi films, I enjoyed my role in “Dhyani Mani” and “Shevri” is also very special to me as I produced and acted in it. A play called “Educating Rita” by Santandev Dubey was really memorable where I played a foul-mouthed British hair dresser! In Hindi films, I loved “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani”, “Hungama” was really fun to work in, and “Paheli” was also my favourite. I enjoyed playing mother to Anil Kapoor in “Nayak” and I think it was one of my greatest roles. Finally, it was a huge compliment to work with Amitabh Bachchan Sir in “Rann”.

Do you think the script/storyline is more important or the co-actor you are paired with? The storyline is definitely important, especially the part I am playing in a particular film. I also give importance to the big production names as that ensures the quality of the film. In terms of co-actor, I am not that big a star to pick and choose but I have to say that being paired with Mr. Bachchan was a really humbling experience.

What made you enter the Film Industry? It was actually a growing process for me. It started off more as a hobby as I had the love for acting. I completed my BA in French at Elphinstone College whilst acting and subsequently entered Marathi language theatre. Around 1992/93, I decided to explore my acting skills in Hindi films and Vijaya Mehta was my mentor. My first film was “Daag”, the fire with Sanjay Dutt.

You started acting at the young age of 9 and have come a long way since. Whether they are plays, serials or the big screen, which are you most passionate about?I had appeared in several ads since 1972 and was in theatre for 25 years. It was a golden era that had wonderful actors,

Page 15: Waves Lifestyle Issue #07 (Jan 2012)

ON THE SETS OF “MERI MAA” (MY MOTHER) At Malvani, Malad, Mumbai, India

After a lovely chat with Neena Kulkarni, she graciously took us to the sets of her latest serial, “Meri Maa”, which now airs on Indian cable channel life OK (formerly Star One). The story revolves around the character Pratibha (played by Sayantani ghosh) who has lost her daughter Pari.

Life on a film set can be hectic and is not a bed of roses. A huge team is involved and the actors have to constantly be full of energy as there is a lot to rehearse and memorise. Between each take, actors need to quickly get ready and go through the script for the next scene. When there is a break, the actors get along well with each other.

There were two units shooting simultaneously indoor and outdoor. We first proceeded to Neena’s trailer where she gets ready for her role as “Mamta”.

Neena was later joined by another Bollywood actress Supriya Shukla (“3 Idiots” and “Parineeta”) who plays a negative role in this serial as “Arti atya” (aunty).

Who is your favourite co-star?Again, I have to say Mr. Bachchan and also Shah Rukh Khan (SRK). I have worked on two of SRK’s production (PBDHH and Paheli) and he was really fun to work with, has a great aura and shows a lot of respect. Aishwarya Rai was also a delight to work with in “Dhai Akshar Prem Ke” and “guru”. She is one of the most un-assuming actress and a truly beautiful person inside.

If you were to compare the industry in your beginning days and today, are there a lot of changes? How committed are today’s stars? There are definitely a lot of changes. The whole warmth is gone and the younger stars get marketed a lot and it is truly a male-dominated and male chauvinistic industry. It has become more of a business than having passion in acting. The dignity of a woman and the way it is portrayed is lost and you can find more glamour dolls nowadays. There is quite an imbalance in the industry now and fine character actresses like Rekha, Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini are missing from the screen.

Any advice to budding actresses wishing to join Bollywood? They first have to throw out any ego in them and enjoy the journey of acting. Most of the younger actresses don’t pay attention to the acting part and have a lack of respect for senior artistes. They should look within themselves and not concentrate so much on the outer appearance. Just be you and never take acting for granted. love what you do and deliver the role with passion and commitment. I’d like to mention stars like Katrina Kaif who really works hard and always gives her best despite Hindi not being her mother tongue and the public loves her for that. Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan are also very dedicated young stars. Real inner talent is sufficient for you to succeed.

Are you currently working on any projects?Yes. I am currently working on a Hindi television serial titled “Meri Maa” (My Mother) which is already on air daily from 18th December on life OK channel (formerly Star One). I play a judge’s wife that has a dominating matriarch role in it.

If not for acting, is there anything else you can imagine yourself doing? No way! I’ve been acting all my life and I’m very happy with this profession and can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

On a last note, what do you wish to say to your fans in Malaysia and Singapore especially to the readers of WAVES Lifestyle magazine?I am truly honoured and blessed that people actually recognise me beyond India. I quote from Kay Kay Menon; “Stardom is a lifestyle which you have an option to choose” and I therefore would love to continue exploring new roles and characters and would do my best for the fans that love and support me thus far. I would like to say a very special thanks to WAVES lifestyle magazine for this lovely interview. Hope you would enjoy my latest role in “Meri Maa” (My Mother) and keep loving me.

Vibe!Previously known as Dareyno from the Hip Hop outfit Junio Hustle, Micstarr Vibe is now one of

Malaysia’s most popular Emcees. Having won awards such as Malaysia’s No.1 Club Emcee at the

Choons Awards, Song of the Year from Met10, and the African International Award for Best Malaysian

act of the year, he has also been voted Best Emcee of the Year for the years 2010 and 2011. In

addition, his 2009/2010 single, I’m Broke, topped the Hitz.fm charts for six weeks in a row!

WAVES lifestyle had a chat with Micstarr Vibe prior to his performance at the Passion’s Night

2011 event held on Christmas and New Year’s Eve at C. T Cafe & Sport Arena. He gave us a scoop on

his thoughts as an emcee, the Johor Bahru scene as well as a low down on what’s next on his list.

Page 17: Waves Lifestyle Issue #07 (Jan 2012)

Congratulations on being awarded Malaysia’s No.1 Club Emcee of 2011. What's your thoughts on receiving the award?Thank you, Waves. I feel that the award is an appreciation to me in making a difference in the entire club emceeing scene in Malaysia.

For those who don't know, you used to go by the stage name of Dareyno from Junio Hustle. What's different in Micstarr Vibe from Dareyno? If you’ve heard my single ‘I’m Broke’, I’ve stated that “Dareyno is a past tense, Vibe is the present”. In other words what I’ve done during Dareyno was chasing the dream while Vibe is the man who has experienced life and is now living that dream.

How is the club scene in Malaysia, overall? In terms of business it has become very competitive. Meanwhile, in terms of entertainment, the quality still has space for improvement.

What's lacking and what can be done to improve the scene? What’s lacking in the scene is the crowd’s acceptance on new concepts. As for improvement, first thing’s first, the nightlife community has got to know the difference between a DJ and a CLUB EMCEE, the definition and the job scope.

We heard your single 'Scars', so is Vibe the hip hopper making a comeback anytime soon?A come back is definite, but for now I would like to persuade my Club Emceeing career to another level by representing Malaysia abroad. I’ve got a surprise for everyone in 2012.

What's your thoughts on the nightlife in Johor Bahru and where do you see it heading in years to come?Johor Bahru is a very strategic spot for the nightlife scene

because it could attract people locally, from Singapore, as well as, Indonesia. No doubt, the DJs in Johor Bahru are a very talented bunch but they are yet to be given the right opportunity to shine. Meanwhile the crowd is patiently waiting to see the difference in the nightlife scene, which I’ve decided to invade JB with. As equally demanding as the Kl scene, JB nightlife can grow much further in years to come.

Name 5 things that you've seen in the club that has 'weirded' you out.1. A girl came up to the console, pinched my behind and ran back down smiling.

2. Once, I was emceeing in a club in Thailand and surprisingly got locked in the toilet, when the lock was inside. They later told me the club was haunted.

3. A guy was beaten up badly once in the club, and the bouncers thought he had passed out, but he suddenly got up and started partying as though nothing happened!

4. Ten minutes before I start my Emceeing in the club, the event organiser asked me where’s my CD bag and HOW AM I gOINg TO SPIN?!

5. A Club Manager insisted that I become a Cupid, and host a wedding proposal in the club.

Who are your inspirations?Frank Sinatra, KRS One and Damian Marley. Words of unity, leadership and life from them has always made me look at the hardest moments in life as an opportunity to achieve rather than fall.

What do you do when you're not caught up in the music world?Since I’m always caught up in my music and emceeing, whenever I get free time, I make sure I’m back home for some quality time with my parents.

SERVE UP!

upon entering Old Market Kopitiam, one is greeted with a huge black and white image of 1950s Malaya. The laid-back decor of the place, with classic Kopitiam chairs and tables, is fused with modernist wall mirrors and wooden paneling, giving the relatively young eatery an old world Kopitiam charm. Perfect for relaxing after a day of shopping, Old Market Kopitiam offers an array of Western and local dishes, with three sets of Nasi Lemak to boot and Wi-Fi available for smartphone users.

The Nasi Lemak served here are paired with three sides, namely Fried Chicken, Chicken Rendang and Otak-otak. According to the wife of its owner, Mdm Mahizah Bakri, the recipe for the dishes at Old Market Kopitiam was perfected by her husband. Made with fixed standards, the Nasi Lemak rice is light and complemented by the crispy anchovies, fried peanuts, cucumber, keropok, a tangy sambal and hard-boiled egg. For the chicken lovers, there is an option of having the fried chicken or rendang chicken with the Nasi Lemak. The fried chicken is well-cooked as the chicken meat is juicy on the inside whilst staying crispy on the outside. The rendang chicken on the other hand stays true to the traditional rendang taste with ample use of spices to bring out the savory flavor of the rendang chicken.

Started by an architect and food enthusiast Mr Mohamed Nasir Padzil, the family-run business began in Pontian before settling at its current location. Known by its loyal customers for its signature aromatic Kopi and frothy Teh, Old Market Kopitiam has had new additions to its menu while retaining old favorites. The Penang Fried Kway Teow, Rice with Dried Chili Chicken and Hainanese Chicken Rice are among some of the classic favorites that are also worth a try. Nasi Lemak

Known for their generous servings, this humble eatery started in 1970s when the

Marsiling lane Market & Cooked Food Centre was first built. Run initially by Mr Abas Bin

Othman and his late wife Mdm Patimah, Muslim Food Stall had been drawing in crowds

for its well-known Roti John. Now run by the children and grandchildren of Mr Abas, the

new chief cook, Mdm Haliza mentions how the stall has altered its menu over time with more

traditional dishes to cater to the demands of customers.

As the pioneer in selling Lontong Kering in early 1990s, Muslim Food Stall has many loyal customers who grew up buying this

signature dish. Customers also queue to buy their Nasi Sambal Goreng, Nasi Rawon and

Nasi Ambeng, which is notably different from JB’s Nasi Ambang as it is served with Urap,

a traditional Malay salad made with spiced grated coconut, bean sprout, long beans and

carrot, instead of fried noodles.

With fresh ingredients bought at the Marsiling lane Market itself, and tediously prepared in

the wee hours of the morning, the Nasi Lemak at this stall stands out from others. The large serving of rice is fragrant, well complimented

by the fried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and fried chicken. Different from JB’s style

of serving Nasi Lemak with hard-boiled eggs, this stall serves theirs with telur mata lembu

(sunny-side-up egg). The sambal is sweet and spicy, a mouthful of flavour to balance out the

other parts of this dish. Customers can also opt to have their Nasi Lemak either with fried fish

or one two servings of fried eggs instead.

Customers can also have Nasi Campur to mix and match dishes of their choice although the set dishes are relatively cheaper. Staying true

to the family motto of not being stingy with the ingredients and servings, the mouth-watering

Nasi Lemak and other set dishes here is bound to make customers come back for more.

Tourism Malaysia Johor Food

Trail 2011

As a JB-born magazine, WAVES lifestyle was expecting to see the usual places and food when we were invited to the Tourism Malaysia (Johor) Johor Food Trail 2011 for 3 days. However, instead of seeing the delicacies that we were accustomed to here in everyday JB life, boy, were we surprised!

The Food Trail, an event stretched out from the 23rd to the 25th of November, is an annual event organised by the Tourism Malaysia Johor where selected members from the media, travel agencies from all the Malaysian states, as well as, from Singapore are invited on a 3 day excursion, promoting the good food and tourism hotspots in Johor. Read on and indulge as we explore Johor; the Jewel of Asia.

DAY 1 NOVEMBEr 23, 2011Registration and check in of all participants was at 12.30pm at the lounge area of The Zon Hotel. The participants coming in from different states were all relaxing and enjoying the welcome drinks as we waited for the official launching of the event and briefing by Tourism Malaysia Johor’s Director, Mr. Edzuar Zar bin Ayob Azari.

After the introductory speech by Mr. Edzuar, the event kicked off with a Laksa Johor food demonstration by the chef from Palm lounge, The Zon. The usual laksa found around JB is actually curry mee compared to other states, hence a long debate usually takes place between Johorians and northerners about laksa as most Johorians have not seen the almost extinct authentic Laksa Johor! The chef prepared the true Laksa Johor dish with ikan kembung. After the interactive demonstration, we were ushered to Salt & Pepper restaurant at The Zon for a buffet lunch. A perfect start to the food trail were local delights such as Laksa Johor, Briyani Gam Batu Pahat, Lontong and the list goes on to tantalise our taste buds.

At 2.45pm, the entourage was chartered to Nusajaya to visit Puteri Harbour and Kota Iskandar. Although it was drizzling heavily, it was not enough to dampen our moods and our guide, an old timer in the tourist guide scene Mr. Sheikh Abdullah or fondly known as Tok Sheikh from the Bumiputra Tourist guide Association Malaysia did a wonderful job in explaining about the landmarks that we were passing by along the way to Nusajaya. At Puteri Harbour, we were given the updates on the upcoming Iskandar projects, the Edu City, lego land and residential layouts. Next stop was the Sultan Ismail Building Johor State legislative Assembly. As the weather was not in our favour, we could not take a detailed tour of Kota Iskandar but Tok Sheikh did his best to point out the ‘Rumah limas’ style of structures and British style architectures incorporated at Nusajaya. Next stop was at the Parliament house, where we were given the grand tour by Mr. Rashid who detailed us about the natural concepts used in the building, the pineapple roof, the 10 pillars marking the 10 districts of Johor, the extra detailing of the pillar bearing the pewter pineapple heads and pepper vines (the original fruit and spice Johor was known for). Mr. Rashid explained that the Parliament house cost over 1 billion Ringgit to erect and the formal attire permitted on the premises during sessions is either a lounge suit or the traditional teluk belanga baju melayu. The state house is open to public and touring details are available at their website.

At 4.45pm we were treated to tea at Warung Saga (Jalan Mahmoddiah). Warung Saga is a landmark not to be missed in JB, with their wonderful breakfast menu and their infamous tauhu goreng. The shop is decorated with pictures from yesteryears of P. Ramlee, politicians and Johor Sultanates. The tauhu goreng is different from its counterpart the tauhu bakar with the former coming in a spicy kicap dip with nut toppings.

For dinner, we arrived at Taman Merdeka (Jln. Kolam Air) for an Arabian style Maqlubah Rice at D’Bulooh Café. How unfortunate that the rain didn’t cease but the wonderful crowd awaiting us at Taman Merdeka improved the situation by erecting tents to facilitate us. Maqlubah is a traditional Palestinian dish whereby the meat and vegetables are cooked with rice and turned upside down just before serving, hence the name maqluba which literally translates as upside-down! The chef Mr. Zulkifli bin Yusof explained the steps in preparing the dish for the eager learners. He prepared the chicken and mutton Maqlubah rice for our feasting and the fine folks at Taman Merdeka took turns to explain the nature of their individual shops at the premise and entertained us with songs.

After a wonderful time, we headed to the JB Bazaar which is at the heart of town. We were in for a treat as we were about to cruise through the bazaar or better known as Pasar Karat in a beca or trishaw! Arranged by Mr. Chua from The Johor Tourism Association, the trishaws are a new feature in Johor. The trishaws existed in Johor a long time ago but were phased out over time but upon revival, the trishaw rides are currently available every weekend. The trishaws have been modified for more comfort and comes insured. The ride through the bazaar was amazing as passersby were all excited to see the becas’ in action!

At 11pm, the entourage headed for supper at Kafe Enampuluhan (Stulang laut) for Mee Rebus Johor! The legendary mee rebus was the best way to end the day. The yellow egg noodles topped with peanut and potato gravy garnished with boiled eggs, beans sprouts, celery, green chilies and lime was heavenly. The serving was just perfect and the price is also very reasonable.

Page 24: Waves Lifestyle Issue #07 (Jan 2012)

DAY 2NOVEMBEr 24, 2011At 8.30am, we headed to MBJB Building, larkin Bomba to get a taste of Kacang Pool Haji. The breakfast set comes with soft fresh toasts and a stew of crushed flavoured foul medames beans, minced beef, lime, onion and chili garnish, and topped with a sunny side up egg. The meal is an Egyptian delicacy and Kacang Pool Haji is a local legend for this. Next stop was the infamous Otak- Otak Kempas at Kempas Baru for a quick lesson on otak-otak making and some snacks of otak-otak, fish and chicken satay, keropok lekor and some otak-otak popiah.

We arrived at the second leg of the Food Trail at Homestay Seri Paya, Kulai at 12pm. The assemblage was given a wedding like greeting by the villagers with kompang music, bunga manggar and silat performances. A tour of handicrafts and food demonstrations were given with participants learning about local delicacies like Tapai Ubi and gertuk Ubi, Thiwool and Tempe. The villagers were very welcoming and at 1.30 pm, a Javanese lunch spread was served with Asam Pedas Johor, Pecal Lele and Botok-botok (a fish dish steamed with herbal veggies and dressed in sambal). After the satisfying meal, we were each assigned to an adopted family for our Homestay experience!

At 4.30pm, an excursion to the village entrepreneurs of Oyster Mushroom Production and Mee Siput were made followed by a Kuda Kepang performance. The Homestay experience is invaluable as we were given a glimpse of the humble village lifestyle and closely knit bonds they have. At 8pm we were served dinner which was done with a Javanese touch called Nasi Ambeng. Each adopted family was given a huge tray of nasi ambeng consisting of white rice, tofu and tempe sambal, fried mee, chicken and vegetables. The hearty meal was then followed by a traditional Zapin dance by the village youngsters and the night concluded with warming speeches by Mr. Edzuar and his deputy Mr. Nizam.

DAY 3NOVEMBEr 25, 2011At 8.30am, the entourage assembled once again for breakfast at the village centre for a treat of Lontong and Nasi Lemak Ayam Rempah. It was a fitting finish to the Food Trail! At 9.30am, we arrived at Senai International Airport and the Food Trail came to an official ending. The Tourism Malaysia Johor staff organised the 3-day event splendidly and their efforts of promoting Johor deserve an honorary mention.

13 Remedies From Your Kitchen

HEALTH

The pain is not going away despite visiting the doctors? Or feeling sore to get off bed to do anything? Try these home-remedies available in your kitchen to ease the pain away. As the saying goes; “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away”!

Give your back some TLC with grapes

got an achy back? grapes could be the ticket to a speedy recovery. Recent studies at Ohio State university suggest eating a heaping cup of grapes daily can relax tight blood vessels, significantly improving blood flow to damaged back tissues (and often within three hours of enjoying the first bowl). That’s great news because your back’s vertebrae and shock-absorbing discs are completely dependent on nearby blood vessels to bring them healing nutrients and oxygen, so improving blood flow is essential for healing damaged back tissue, says Stengler.

Chase away joint pain and headaches with cherries

latest studies show that at least one in four women is struggling with arthritis, gout or chronic headaches. If you’re one of them, a daily bowl of cherries could ease your ache, without the stomach upset so often triggered by today’s painkillers, say researchers at East lansing’s Michigan State university. Their research reveals that anthocyanins, the compounds that give cherries their brilliant red color, are anti-inflammatories 10 times stronger than ibuprofen and aspirin. “Anthocyanins help shut down the powerful enzymes that kick-start tissue inflammation, so they can prevent, as well as treat, many different kinds of pain,” explains Muraleedharan Nair, Ph.D., professor of food science at Michigan State university. His advice: Enjoy 20 cherries daily, then continue until your pain disappears.

Beat bladder infections with blueberries

Eating 1 cup of blueberries daily, whether you opt for them fresh, frozen or in juice form, can cut your risk of a urinary tract infection (uTIs) by 60 percent, according to researchers at New Jersey’s Rutgers university. That’s because blueberries are loaded with tannins, plant compounds that wrap around problem-causing bacteria in the bladder, so they can’t get a toehold and create an infection, explains Amy Howell, Ph.D. a scientist at Rutgers university.

Relax painful muscles with peppermint

Suffering from tight, sore muscles? Stubborn knots can hang around for months if they aren’t properly treated, says naturopath Mark Stengler, N.D., author of the book; The Natural Physician’s Healing Therapies. His advice: three times each week, soak in a warm tub scented with 10 drops of peppermint oil. The warm water will relax your muscles, while the peppermint oil will naturally soothe your nerves - a combo that can ease muscle cramping 25 percent more effectively than over-the-counter painkillers, and cut the frequency of future flare-ups in half, says Stengler.

WAVES 26

Page 27: Waves Lifestyle Issue #07 (Jan 2012)

Make muscle pain a memory with ginger

When Danish researchers asked achy people to jazz up their diets with ginger, it eased muscle and joint pain, swelling and stiffness for up to 63 percent of them within two months. Experts credit ginger’s potent compounds called gingerols, which prevent the production of pain-triggering hormones. The study’s recommended dose: Add at least 1 teaspoon of dried ginger or 2 teaspoons of chopped ginger to meals daily.

Erase earaches with garlic

Painful ear infections drive many to the doctors every year. To cure one fast, place two drops of warm garlic oil into your aching ear twice daily for five days. This simple treatment can clear up ear infections faster than prescription meds, say experts at the university of New Mexico School of Medicine. Scientists say garlic’s active ingredients (germanium, selenium, and sulfur compounds) are naturally toxic to dozens of different pain-causing bacteria. To whip up your own garlic oil, gently simmer three cloves

of crushed garlic in a half a cup of extra virgin olive oil for two minutes, strain, then refrigerate for up to two weeks, suggests Teresa graedon, Ph.D., co-author of the book, Best Choices From The People’s Pharmacy. For an optimal experience, warm this mix slightly before using so the liquid will feel soothing in your ear canal.

Heal sinus problems with horseradish

latest studies show sinusitis is one of the top chronic health problems. And this condition doesn’t just spur congestion and facial pain, it also makes sufferers six timesmore likely to feel achy all-over. Horseradish to the rescue! According to german researchers, this eye-watering condiment naturally revs up blood flow to the sinus cavities, helping to open and drain clogged sinuses and heal sinus infections more quickly than decongestant sprays do. The study’s recommended dose: One teaspoon twice daily (either on its own, or used as a sandwich or meat topping) until symptoms clear.

Cure a toothache with cloves

got a toothache and can’t get to the dentist? gently chewing on a clove can ease tooth pain and gum inflammation for two hours straight, say UCLA researchers. Experts point to a natural compound in cloves called eugenol, a powerful, natural anesthetic. Bonus: Sprinkling a ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves on meals daily may also protect your ticker. Scientists say this simple action helps stabilise blood sugar, plus dampen production of artery-clogging cholesterol in as little as three weeks.

Tame chronic pain with turmeric

Studies show turmeric, a popular East Indian spice, is actually three times more effective at easing pain than aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen, plus it can help relieve chronic pain for 50 percent of people struggling with arthritis and even fibromyalgia, according to Cornell researchers. That’s because turmeric’s active ingredient, curcumin, naturally shuts down cyclooxygenase 2, an enzyme that churns out a stream of pain-producing hormones, explains nutrition researcher Julian Whitaker, M.D. and author of the book, Reversing Diabetes. The study’s recommended dose: Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon of this spice daily onto any rice, poultry, meat or vegetable dish.

Page 28: Waves Lifestyle Issue #07 (Jan 2012)

Tame leg cramps with tomato juice

At least one in five people regularly struggle with leg cramps. The culprit? Potassium deficiencies, which occur when this mineral is flushed out by diuretics, caffeinated beverages or heavy perspiration during exercise. Sip 10 ounces of potassium-rich tomato juice daily and you’ll not only speed your recovery, you’ll reduce your risk of painful cramp flare-ups in as little as 10 days, say uClA researchers.

Wash away painful injuries with water

Whether it’s your feet, your knees or your shoulders that are throbbing, experts at New York ’s Manhattan College say you could kick-start your recovery in one week just by drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily. Why? Experts say water dilutes, and then helps flush out, histamine, a pain-

triggering compound produced by injured tissues. “Plus water is a key building block of the cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones, your joints’ lubricating fluid, and the soft discs in your spine,” adds Susan M. Kleiner, Ph.D., author of the book, The good Mood Diet. “And when these tissues are well-hydrated, they can move and glide over each other without causing pain.” One caveat: Be sure to measure your drinking glasses to find out how large they really are before you start sipping, she says. Today’s juice glasses often hold more than 12 ounces, which means five servings could be enough to meet your daily goal.

Prevent PMS with yogurt

up to 80 percent of women will struggle with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and its uncomfortable symptoms, report Yale researchers. The reason: Their nervous systems are sensitive to the ups and downs in estrogen and progesterone that occur naturally every month. But snacking on 2 cups of yogurt a day can slash these symptoms by 48 percent, say researchers at New York ’s Columbia university. “Yogurt is rich in calcium, a mineral that naturally calms the nervous system, preventing painful symptoms even when hormones are in flux,” explains Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., a professor of gynecology at Yale university.

Soothe foot pain with salt

Experts say at least a few million people develop painful ingrown toenails each year. But regularly soaking ingrown nails in warm salt water baths can cure these painful infections within four days, say scientists at California ’s Stanford university . The salt in the mix naturally nixes inflammation, plus it’s anti-bacterial, so it quickly destroys the germs that cause swelling and pain. Just mix 1 teaspoon of salt into each cup of water, heat to the warmest temperature that you can comfortably stand, and then soak the affected foot area for 20 minutes twice daily, until your infection subsides.

COMMuNITY

I’ve been a regular commuter along the Skudai-Pasir gudang-Skudai road, especially in my years of working at Pasir gudang. I had to leave home early to meet up with the unpredictable traffic and had to get the lowest CC car possible for economical purposes. I then moved my place of work to somewhere near my home and the situation became more convenient and cost-effective.

However, in the past year, the situation has changed. The traffic is getting worse everywhere and this is evident during peak hours and over the weekends. The amount of automobiles has increased and it suddenly seems that there are more vehicles on the road. Previously, we could travel smoothly without any traffic and get to places early during the weekends. Now, if you travel between afternoons to late evening to Johor Bahru (JB) back and forth, the chances are you face major traffic.

MORE VEHICLES ON THE ROADThe roads have become more congested and traveling is not as convenient as before. I wondered why this is happening and have come to an understanding that the quality and reliability of public transportation in JB is poor hence the reliance on getting a vehicle to commute.

IMMACULATE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, IS IT A HYPE?We definitely need quality and reliable public transportation to ease the traffic. In comparison with Singapore, they have immaculate public transportation which includes bus, taxi and MRT. Once, I had a chat with a taxi driver in Singapore and he said that all taxis there have GPS which means not only that they can find their way but they can also be traced wherever they are by the local authorities or the taxi company. This boosts the passenger’s confidence in feeling secured. I hope our transportation can be as reliable and safe as Singapore’s.

MORE PEOPLE COMINg TO JBWithout doubt, catalyst projects such as Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) and EduCity under the flagship of

Iskandar Malaysia have resulted in more people visiting JB, and the number is set to rise when projects such as lego land and Indoor Theme Park are opened to public. Thus, the urgency for a proper public transportation system, as we would not want visitors to JB complaining about bad traffic and unreliable public transport.

WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS?If this situation continues, I imagine the traffic condition in JB will be as bad as the one in Jakarta, Indonesia. The traffic there is so bad almost all the time and is even worse during peak hours. I would not want JB to be in that state and for that the citizen and local authorities/government have a role to play to implement a better public transportation system.

WHAT SHOULD THE gOVERNMENT OR LOCAL AUTHORITIES DO?A reliable, systematic and safe transportation must be provided. It is not an overnight task but still not impossible as JB is currently growing more rapidly. The good news is, I found out that the relevant authorities has plans to improve the transportation and infrastructure in JB and I reckon that these projects would ensure in a more reliable and systematic transportation in future.

There are also talks of a possible MRT that will connect JB and Singapore. This, without a doubt, would provide a better and reliable public transportation between the two cities. Of course there would be an issue to improve in the immigration system between both the countries but let it be one step at a time.

As a citizen of Johor, I believe we should strongly support the initiatives carried out by the government and wherever possible we should use the public transportation once it is under progress. I believe our city would soon be a better and pleasant place to live in and let’s hope that all the projects that have been laid down for our city will improve the mobility, network and transportation.

Motivation is a part of our life. After all, if you are too comfortable and not being challenged then something is wrong. At times you need to get out of your comfort zone and do something that requires more from you. That is the only way we grow and growth is not an option for dreamers - it’s a necessity.

“To all the dreamers out there”Do you have a deep desire to achieve something great? Do you want to live a more satisfying life? If so, you are a dreamer. This article is dedicated to you. Right now you are the most important person around. You are that special.

What is a dreamer? Before we continue, let me clarify what a dreamer is because people often don’t appreciate being called dreamers. A dreamer is a person who is not afraid to challenge society’s norms or to tread their own path rather than following the well-trodden path. A dreamer is someone who is always willing to take a chance and always asks why before doing something others do blindly. Dreamers are world changers!

Don’t follow the crowdIf you are a dreamer, you cannot afford to work on society’s

assumptions and standards. Be unique. A lot of people have spent nearly 15 to 20 years getting an education so they can have that perfect job and earn a huge salary. unfortunately for most, the perfect job and the huge earnings never materialise. Most lose touch with the very people they are working so hard to provide for, all because of having to “work hard” for a living.

Chart your own courseThere is another way. It’s not for everyone. It’s not the easier way. Actually, it is more likely to be the harder way. But I guarantee you it is the best way. It is simply this – follow your dreams. If you can think it, you can have it.

Start now.I hope your dream will come to life and make a positive contribution to the lives of the people. You can make all the difference! Sadly but true, and in the words of Myles Munroe - “The poorest man in the world is the man without a dream. The most frustrated man in the world is the man with a dream that never becomes reality.”

Have a dream. Make it a reality.

TIPS TO STAY DEBT-FrEEYou first need to assess your problems. If you are in debt, figure out how much money you owe and who do you owe it to? gather your bills, and make a simple list or spreadsheet of all the debts you have. Write down all the pertinent facts, including names of the creditors, your total balance, your minimum monthly payment, and your interest rates.

Now that you have a clear budget and savings goal, set up an automatic deposit to your savings account. get the whole family involved - this is also a great way to teach kids about the value of money, or simply unite with your partner to not overspend! We wish you good luck in achieving a debt-free life starting from now.

Itemise your highest interest debts (generally credit cards, car payment, mortgage, etc.) and make minimal payments on everything. Pay off the debt which has the highest interest rate first.

Avoid using credit cards! The easiest way to avoid debts is to try not to charge anything on a credit card unless it is a real emergency such as a last minute air ticket, hotel bookings or medical emergencies and be certain that you are able to pay off these purchases. Make sure you pay off your credit card bill completely when it's due and don't leave anything to accrue interest and definitely don't delay the payment as late charges become an added expense. This way you will earn a good credit score without taking on more debts.

Contact. If you already owe quite a sum on your credit card, contact your credit card companies and ask them for help. They aren't likely to forgive you on your loan, but they may be willing to reduce your interest rates. If your interest rate is currently 12% or more, ask if they would be willing to cut their rate in half. They may come up with a solution for you to pay something than becoming a defaulter.

Change your behavior. If your debt is a result of overspending, for example you buy mass quantities of everything or buy things that you want,

but are not necessary for your way of life; do some budget planning.

Save money, gain some extra income and try not to spend more than you earn. Those ways will allow you to get rid of debts faster.

Prevent debts. Out of every pay-check, put aside some money for bills, food and other necessities of living, as well as some for rainy days. If possible, put aside a little money for non-necessities so you are able to buy things you want without going into debts. Keep saving money and paying off bills regularly so that you can work towards clearing off your debts.

Record your spending. This is actually your starting key to getting out of debts. You're in debt because you spent money you didn't have. If you're like many people, your debts didn't come from one single huge purchase; it was trickles of spending amassed over a period of time. So keep a budget and monitor your spending.

Consider a debt consolidation loan. You can pull all of your debts together into one account, preferably one featuring a fixed or low interest rate. You can use the proceeds from the loan to pay back your other creditors and then make monthly payments back to the loan consolidator.
