nicHt nur MusikeditorialMit Filmen und Lesungen hat Waves Vienna

auch abseits des Musikprogramms einige Leckerbissen zu bieten. Heute Freitag be-gibt sich etwa Jonas Engelmann auf Spu-rensuche zwischen Popkultur und jüdischer Identität. Außerdem lesen Maria Hofer sowie Stefanie Sargnagel. Und am Samstag gibt es von Andreas Dorau Auszüge aus seiner Autobiografi e zu hören – mit Unterstützung von Dirk Stermann. Das Filmprogramm reicht von neuem Heimischem („Chucks“) über eine Hip-Hop-Doku von Mike Skinner („Hip Hop in the Holy Land“) – beide im Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus – bis hin zu Jim Jarmuschs psychedelischem Western „Dead Man“ beim Pringles Pop Up Cinema.

Auf Grund des durch technische Schwie-rigkeiten bedingten Ausfalls der Spielstät-te Haus der Musik – Foyer kommt es Am Freitag zu folgenden Änderungen: Foolish Green wechseln ins Künstlerhaus Basement, Golden Kanine in die Künstlerhaus Passage und Odd Hugo ins Badeschiff . We Walk Walls und Elsa Tootsie & The Mini Band mussten zu unserem Bedauern abgesagt werden. Durch die notwendigen Änderungen verschieben sich auch die Lesungen von Maria Hofer und Stefanie Sargnagel in der Künstlerhaus Pas-sage. Die neuen Beginnzeiten der betroff e-nen Künstler könnt ihr dem Timetable in der Heftmitte, unserer Website und der Waves-Handy-App entnehmen. Zur Sicherheit sei auch noch einmal darauf hingewiesen, dass die Konzerte im Haus der Musik – Top Floor wie geplant stattfi nden werden.

More tHan MusicWith fi lms and readings, Waves Vienna has some treats beyond the music programme to off er. Today, Friday, for instance, Jonas Engelmann will go exploring between the poles of pop culture and Jewish identity. There are, moreover, going to be readings by Maria Hofer and Stefanie Sargnagel. On Saturday, Andreas Dorau will read from his autobiography – together with Dirk Ster-mann. The fi lm programme ranges from the new Austrian movie “Chucks” to a hip hop documentary by Mike Skinner (“Hip Hop in the Holy Land”) – both screened at Stadtkino at Künstlerhaus – to Jim Jar-musch’s psychedelic western “Dead Man” at the Pringles Pop-Up Cinema.

Since concerts originally scheduled for the Haus der Musik – Foyer cannot take place at that location due to technical problems, the timetable for Friday had to be changed as follows: Foolish Green will perform at Künstlerhaus Basement, Golden Kanine at Künstlerhaus Passage, and Odd Hugo at Badeschiff . The gigs of We Walk Walls and Elsa Tootsie & The Mini Band unfor-tunately had to be cancelled. Because of these changes, the readings by Maria Hofer and Stefanie Sargnagel had to be rescheduled as well. Their new time slots can be found in the timetables in the mid-dle of this magazine, on our website, and on the Waves mobile app. We furthermore want to remind you that the concerts at Haus der Musik – Top Floor will take place as scheduled.

Besucht man auch nur eine der zahlreichen Venues, triff t man dort sicherlich auf eines: Freunde. Das Waves verbindet nicht nur Ost und West, auch für das ortsansässige, musikinteressierte Publikum ist es beson-ders im fünften Jahr seines Bestehens ein Fixtermin, um sich auzutauschen und ein-ander wiederzusehen. Man könnte es auf die Größe Wiens schieben, auf das hier fast schon gefl ügelte Wort, dass sowieso „je-der jeden kennt“ – doch bietet das Waves weitaus mehr als nur einen Ort für ein Get-Together. Dass Musik den Menschen, die hier arbeiten, am Herzen liegt, dass jeder von der Produktion bis zu den Volunteers mit vollem Elan dabei ist, macht das Waves so besonders. Wir wünschen uns, dass in den kommenden Tagen noch viele Freund-schaften geschlossen werden. Waves doesn’t only build a bridge between East and West; for the lo-cal music-interested audience, too, it’s a marked date in the calendar for meeting up with people – especially at this year’s 5th anniversary. Auch am zweiten Festivaltag wird geboten, was das Waves-Herz zwi-schen Musik, Film und Literatur begehrt. Den Freitag startet man am besten mit Mari Kalkun (18:30, Haus der Musik – Top Floor), die mit estnischem Folk eines der heurigen Gastländer präsentiert. Danach beehrt The-Streets-Gründer Mike Skinner zur Freude aller Hip-Hop-Heads Waves Vienna gleich mehrmals: Im Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus wird die Dokumentation „Hip Hop in the Holy Land“ (19:00) gezeigt, bei der Skinner Co-Regie geführt hat und die die Rap-Szene in Israel porträtiert. Anschließend steht der britische Rapper bei einem Q&A für alle Interessierten auch noch Rede und Antwort. Und als wäre das nicht schon großartig genug, gibt’s zu späterer Stunde in der Festi-valzentrale bei einem DJ-Set noch was auf die Ohren.Bevor es soweit ist, genießt man allerdings erst mal die wunderba-ren Odd Hugo (20:30, Badeschiff). Mit ihrem Folk-Setting mimen sie die estnischen Beirut, plus Poly-Harmonien, Trompeten und einer kleinen Portion Balkan-Sound. Und wem Musik allein nicht reicht, der oder die kann heuer am Waves Vienna auch noch seinen Literatur-durst stillen: In der Künstlerhaus Passage kann man zum Beispiel Stefanie Sargnagels (20:05) derben Ergüssen lauschen. Natürlich mit roter Baskenmütze! Danach hat man die Qual der Wahl: Entwe-der sieht man sich Neuschnee (21:15, Künstlerhaus Passage), das Soloprojekt von Das-Trojanische-Pferd-Mitglied Hans Wagner an – Streicher inklusive! Oder man widmet sich doch lieber dem Trio Si-zarr (21:15, Haymarket), das sein heuer erschienenes Album „Nurture“ zum Besten gibt. Die jungen Landauer brillieren darauf mit Eighties-Contenance, Synth-Klängen und ein bisschen Weltschmerz.Britisch geht’s dann im Porgy & Bess, einer der schönsten Waves-Locations, weiter. Coasts (22:00), Indie-Rocker aus Bristol, haben ihr Debütalbum mitgebracht und werden mit Crystal-Fighters-Feeling den Jazzclub zum Tanzen bringen. Allerbester Waves-Geheimtipp: danach im Porgy & Bess bleiben, um ja nicht Honne (23:15) zu ver-passen. Das Duo kommt ebenfalls aus Großbritannien und veran-kert sich mit ihrem Electro-Soul irgendwo zwischen Chet Faker, ein bisschen Rhye und ganz viel Sex-Appeal. Dafür lohnt es sich fast einen der Headliner des Abends sausen zu lassen, aber eben nur fast: Austra (22:45, Alte Post) bespielen nämlich zeitgleich die Fes-tivalzentrale. Damit man die fantastische Stimme der ausgebildeten Opernsängerin und Frontfrau Katie Stelmanis und ganz viel Aust-ra-Synthies nicht verpassen muss, sollte man sich dann halt doch irgendwie zweiteilen. Zum würdigen Abschluss des zweiten Waves-Tages dann – wie bereits gesagt – ab zu Mike Skinner (00:45, Alte Post) und seinem DJ-Set. Danach aber bitte brav ins Bett hüpfen. Immerhin steht ja noch der letzte Festival-Tag vor der Tür, und der hält wieder einiges bereit!

On the second day of the festival we once more provide you with everything the Waves visitor heart wishes for in music, films, and literature. The performance of Mari Kalkun (6.30 pm, Haus der Musik – Top Floor) will be a good start into Friday night. With her Estonian folk, she represents one of this year’s guest countries. After that, The Streets mastermind Mike Skinner will honour us with his presence on a total of three occasions – much to the joy of all you hip hop heads: first, the documentary “Hip Hop in the Holy Land” (7 pm), which was co-directed by Skinner and por-traits the rap scene in Israel, will be screened at the Stadtkino at Künstlerhaus. At the subsequent Q&A, the British rapper will answer questions from the audience. And as if that’s not enough, he’ll do a DJ-set at the Festival Centre later tonight.But before that, it’s time to enjoy the performance of the wonder-ful Odd Hugo (8.30 pm, Badeschiff). With their folk setting, they are the Esthonian version of Beirut – plus poly-harmonies, trum-pets, and a pinch of Balkan sound. If music isn’t enough for you, we also got something to satisfy your lust for literature at Waves Vienna this year. At Künstlerhaus Passage, you can listen to Ste-fanie Sarnagel’s (8.05 pm) bawdy outpourings. With a red beret, of course! After that, you’ll be spoilt for choice: either you watch Neuschnee (9.15 pm, Künstlerhaus Passage), the solo project of Das Trojanische Pferd member Hans Wagner – including strings –, or you go and watch the trio Sizarr (9.15 pm, Haymarket), who will perform their new album “Nurture”. On the record, the young mu-sicians from Landau, Germany shine with 80s composure, synth sounds, and a little bit of world weariness.Next, you can check out some UK goodness at Porgy & Bess, one of the most beautiful Waves venues. Coasts (10 pm), indie rock-ers from Bristol, will make the Jazz club dance with their debut album and a Crystal Fighters atmosphere. Top Waves tip: stay at Porgy & Bess afterwards and don’t miss Honne (11.15 pm). The duo, which comes from Great Britain as well, and its electro soul can be positioned somewhere between Chet Faker and Rhye – with lots of sex appeal. Almost worth skipping one of the Waves headliners; almost. Austra (10.45 pm, Alte Post) are going to per-form at the festival centre at about the same time. In order not to miss the fantastic voice of the trained opera singer and front woman Katie Stelmanis and the plentitude of Austra synths, it would be quite handy to be able to split oneself in half. Finally, as already mentioned, a worthy conclusion of the second Waves day with Mike Skinner (12.45 am, Alte Post) and his DJ set. Then, you’ll hopefully be off to bed. After all, the last festival day awaits you and it’s got lots to offer!

Die guten Menschen von Warner Music hosten auch dieses Jahr wieder einen Abend im Porgy & Bess. Den Beginn macht Jamie Lawson (19:45). Der Engländer wur-de als erster Künstler bei Ed Sheerans Label aufgenommen, nachdem er bereits mit drei Alben in den irischen Charts auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hatte. Das vier-te kommt nun Anfang Oktober und wird mehr von seiner leidenschaftlichen Folk-musik liefern. Darauf folgt Jesper Munk (20:45) mit seinem mal explosiven, mal gefühlvollen Blues-Rock. Angefangen hat er als Straßenmusiker, vor kurzem ist be-reits sein zweites Album „Claim“ erschie-nen – dabei ist Munk gerade mal 23 Jahre alt. Die Coasts (22:00) aus Bristol bringen anschließend ihren hymnischen Indie-Pop ins Porgy & Bess. Die BBC hat ihr Talent bereits erkannt und die Single „A Rush Of Blood“ als Hottest Record ausgezeichnet. Ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum ist gerade erst erschienen und schon beweisen die fünf Jungs, wie viel da noch gehen wird. Den Abschluss machen Honne (23:15) aus London. Ihr elektronischer Soul erinnert an James Blake und Jamie Woon, nur eben mit ganz viel Soul. Auf ein Album wartet man noch, bisher haben sie aber bereits mit ihren drei EPs einen ausgezeichneten Eindruck hinterlassen. Ein geschmeidiges Ende für einen hochwertigen Abend. The lovely people of Warner Music will once again host an evening at Porgy & Bess this year. Jamie Lawson (7.45 pm) is go-ing to kick off the event. The Englishman was the first artist to sign to Ed Sheeran’s label – after he’d already called attention to himself with three albums in the Irish charts. The forth record is to be released in early October and will thrill his fans with more of his passionate folk music. Next on stage is Jesper Munk (8.45 pm) with his sometimes explosive, sometimes sensitive blues rock. He started out as a busker, only recently his second album “Claim” was re-leased – and Munk is only 23 years old. The band Coasts (10 pm) from Bristol will then fill Porgy & Bess with their hymnal in-die pop. The BBC already recognised their talent and named their single “A Rush Of Blood” “hottest record”. Their self-titled debut album was only just released, but already the five lads are showing us that there’s more to come. Last but not least: Honne (11.15 pm) from London. Their elec-tronic sound is reminiscent of James Blake and Jamie Woon, but with lots of soul. Fans are still waiting for an album, but their three EPs have left an excellent im-pression. A smooth end for a top evening.

koala voiceWas haben vier Slowenen mit Australien zu tun? Genau, eigentlich gar nichts. Die Indie-Rock-Newcomer aus Kisovec, die heuer die Künstlerhaus Passage eröffneten, nennen sich trotzdem Koala Voice. Von der ersten Nummer an präsentierte das Quartett ihr De-büt „Kangaroo’s a Neighbour“ mit viel Büh-nenpräsenz. Das klingt nach 60s-Garage und Indie-Pop, mit fast schon virtuosen Gitarren-Riffs. Anfangs wirkt die Frontfrau, die für Vocals und die zweite Gitarre verantwortlich ist, noch recht schüchtern, erspielt sich aller-dings nach und nach mehr Selbstvertrauen. Und dem Publikum gefällt’s. Ab „Nothing“, ein Hit mit Ohrwurmpotenzial, sind die ers-ten Reihen nicht mehr zu halten. Das Konzept der offenen Showcase-Location funktioniert übrigens blendend: Koala Voice lockten mit ihrem Garage-Sound nicht nur Waves-Besu-cher, sondern auch Passanten an. Von An-zugträgern, die bei der Börse falsch abgebo-gen sind, bis hin zu Wien-Touris, die die Oper anscheinend nicht finden konnten, wippte alles zu den eingängigen Indie-Beats mit. What do four Slovenians have to do with Australia? Exactly, nothing. Still, the indie rock newcomers from Kisovec, who kicked off the evening at Künstlerhaus Passage to-day, call themselves Koala Voice. From the first song on, the four-piece presents its de-but “Kangaroo’s a Neighbour” with plenty of stage presence. Sounds like 60s garage and indie pop with almost virtuosic guitar riffs. Although the front woman, who’s re-sponsible for the vocals and rhythm guitar, seemed rather shy in the beginning, she gained more and more confidence through-out the show. And the audience loved it. As soon as they started to play their catchy hit “Nothing”, the front rows went crazy. By the way, the concept of an open showcase location works brilliantly: with their garage sound, Koala Voice attracted not just Waves visitors, but also passers-by. From men in suits who took a wrong turn at the Stock ex-change to tourists who apparently couldn’t find the opera house – they were all tapping their feet to the indie beats. text MICHAELA PICHLER

little bootsNachdem die Oberösterreicher von Ant An-tic mit ihrem sphärischen Ambient-Pop das Publikum in der Alten Post ins Schwelgen versetzt hatten, betrat Victoria Hesketh alias Little Boots die Bühne der Festival-zentrale. Die britische Pop-Queen erinnert dabei mit ihrer platinblonden Mähne ein bisschen an Sia, musikalisch fährt sie aber eine synthetischere Schiene. Im bonbonro-sa Outfit gibt sie ihr neuestes und drittes Abum „Working Girl“ zum Besten, während sie – gerecht dem Albummotto – selbst an den Tasten des Synthesizers steht und für die digitalen Beats sorgt. Verstärkt wird das ganze auch von Girlie-Background- Gesang. Machine-Pop mit prallem Sound, der das Waves-Vienna-Publikum am Anfang häm-mernd zum Kopfnicken animiert. Ab dem dritten Song tauen die Little-Boots-Fans in der Alten Post bewegungstechnisch zum Glück noch weiter auf und kopieren die auf der Bühne dargebotene Choreo. Ein gelungener Headliner-Auftakt für Waves Vienna also, der schon Lust auf die nächs-ten Acts macht. After Ant Antic from Up-per Austria had captivated the audience at Alte Post with their spheric ambient pop, Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots got on stage at the Festival Centre. With her platinum blond hair, the British pop queen reminds us of Sia, but, musically, she goes for a more synthetic sound. Dressed in a candy pink outfit, she performs her third album „Working Girl“ while, in accordance with her album title, she stands in front of the synthesiser and generates the digital beats herself. The whole thing was ac-companied by girlie background singing. Machine pop with a full sound which, in the beginning, only got the audience to nod their heads. From the third song on, however, the Little Boots fans fortunately started to get into it and to copy the cho-reography performed on stage. All in all, a successful first headliner act for Waves Vienna 2015 that got us excited for more acts to come. text MICHAELA PICHLER

oddiseeOddisee zählt mit Sicherheit zu den High-lights des Tages. Seine Band Good Comp-ny brachte das Publikum schon mit einem virtuosen Intro zum Kochen. Das Schlag-zeug und der Bass harmonierten perfekt und die Gitarre rundete das Ensemble mit Jazz-Akkorden ab. Der berüchtigte Funke sprang mit dem Auftritt von Amir Mohamed alias Oddisee sofort über. Die peinlichen „Put your hands up in the air“-Ansagen werden vermieden, das Publikum aber trotzdem zum Mitmachen animiert. Spätestens bei der Anspielung an Kendrick Lamars „Alright“ war klar, dass Oddisee den Donnerstag gewonnen hat. Die Old-School-Beats gepaart mit den sehr per-sönlichen Lyrics machte den Auftritt auch für Hip-Hop-Neulinge mehr als interessant. Oddisees Band Good Compny gebührt vor allem Anerkennung. Schlagzeug, Bass, Keyboard und Gitarre fügten sich per-fekt zur Stimme. Ein Auftritt, der Wien mit Sicherheit in Erinnerung bleiben wird. Oddisee is definitely one of the highlights of the day. His band Good Compny got the audience going already during the virtuosic intro. The drums and bass are in perfect harmony and the guitar rounds off the ensemble with jazz chords. The crowd was immediately electrified by the perfor-mance of Amir Mohamed aka Oddisee. No embarrassing prompts to “put your hands up in the air” are needed in order to mo-tivate people to join in. With the hint at Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright”, at the latest, it was clear that Oddisee won Thursday. The old school beats combined with very personal lyrics made the performance interesting even for hip hop greenhorns. Special credit is due to Oddisee’s band Good Compny.
