Over the last year it has been very obvious that things were changing here at Waverly Road. It is easy to see changes when they involve walls being ripped down and new spaces being made. But as those physical changes were happening, other things were being seen and discussed. I am now very excited to be able to tell you all about one of the changes we are making to our staffing plan that I think will help us move and grow for God’s future.
Rachel and Josh do wonderful work for the kingdom and for the mission of Waverly Road, now they are going to be doing it a little differently. Rachel is now going to be shepherding all our pre-K children and working closely with their families and our young adults as our Director of Young Adult and Children discipleship Ministries. She will also continue leading our children’s choir.
Josh is our Director of Student Discipleship Ministries. He will be working to make sure that Sunday School and youth activities are nurturing, challenging, and exciting for them. Josh will also take the lead on the after-school program, VBS and continue his wonderful work on coordinating mission trips.
I believe that these changes put both Josh and Rachel in places that will use the gifts God has given them to their fullest potential. I hope that you will be praying for both Josh and Rachel as they move into these new roles and as they continue to grow in their faith and ministry here at Waverly Road.
May God continue to bless,

Why Bother with Discipleship? In an article based in part on his book, The Great Omission, the late Dallas Willard asks this question, then asks why so many people believe it is sufficient just to believe in Christ as fulfilling admission to eternity. He then offers four points why simple belief is not enough.
First, there is nothing in what Jesus himself taught that suggests we can
enjoy forgiveness at Jesus’ expense and then have nothing more to do with him.
Second, without following Jesus’ instruction, we are locked into defeat so far as our moral intentions are concerned.
Third, only avid discipleship to Christ through the spirit brings the inward transformation of thought, feeling and character that we desire, and
Fourth, only when we walk as closely as possible to Jesus’ model do we receive the power that is beyond ourselves in dealing with the problems that affect our earthly existence.
Discipleship, he reminds us, is a continuous process: learning, experimenting, growing and slowly succeeding to become true followers of Jesus. It helps to have others join us in this process to support and encourage us to continue. Are you interested in becoming a better disciple?
You are invited to join the Apprentice Class in Sunday school. We meet Sunday mornings at 9:45 in room 204 for study, sharing and encouragement. On July 29, after finishing a study of the Letter of John, we will begin a new study of Richard Rohr’s book, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life. This book, although now out of print, is available on Kindle and used from many sources found on amazon.com. Come join us as we explore our apprenticeship and learn to “fall upward” as we learn to follow Jesus more closely.

We’re brought up to be strong, self-sufficient, independent people. We tend to think that if we ask for help, it is a sign of weakness. So we try to keep our struggles hidden, stuffed deep inside. However, that’s not God’s plan. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” God wants us to care for others—and allow others to care for us in our time of need.
If you’re sad or struggling inside, don’t suffer alone. Ask for help. We’ve got a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to listen, care, encourage, pray, and help you through a tough time. (It’s confidential too!) Find out more about Stephen Ministry by talking with one of our Stephen Leaders: Sharon Petke, Dave Petke, Diana Eldredge or Barbara Lane. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!
