Lumentum has been making products for the optical network for more than 35 years. That depth of experience has helped Lumentum validate the simple idea that when moving data the optical layer is where the most value for the least cost is found.

Since 2001, Lumentum has deployed tens of thousands of WaveReady system nodes and stand-alone solutions in all layers of the optical network, especially mobile broadband fronthaul and backhaul, campus, metro edge and aggregation, metro core, regional backbone, and data center networks.

Lumentum WaveReady systems and modules deliver the products that service providers need to maximize the capacity of in-service and dark fiber, improve service delivery flexibility and ensure long-term investment protection. WaveReady provides a smooth, simple roadmap for both greenfield development and incremental capacity expansion.

High-Value ModulesGrowth in high bandwidth services compels network operators to provide reliable and cost-effective transport across all levels of the optical network. For optical network operators the challenge is significant because they must achieve excellence in the face of new protocols, burgeoning demand and increasing complexity while managing upgrade cost versus higher customer expectations.

The Lumentum WaveReady products are ready to meet all of these challenges. Built to satisfy both Telco and Enterprise requirements, Lumentum WaveReady modules are ready to deploy in existing or new networks to generate new revenue with the capacity, quality, scalability, reliability and availability required by today’s high-bandwidth services.

Optical Layer OperationWaveReady modules are transparent to the details of the signal so WaveReady WDM solutions deploy quickly and can multiplex any combination of services required—Ethernet, SONET/SDH, Fibre Channel, CPRI, OTN and other protocols and data rates—over a single fiber and long distances. Other important features supporting this flexibility include:

• Autolock: WaveReady regenerators and amplifiers only need a connection—the modules automatically detect the data rate with no provisioning or equipment configuration required.

• Easy multiplexing: Increase the capacity of a single fiber from one channel to four, eight, 40 or even 88 channels with WaveReady WDM modules. The upgrade can often be performed with no configuration and usually without interrupting existing services, all within the optical layer of the network.

• Comprehensive management: Provision an optical connection to enable a management channel to modules in a shelf and subtended shelves. WaveReady Multi-Node Manager software provides management for WaveReady nodes with standard simple network management protocol (SNMP) or TL1 interfaces or integrates with third-party tools such as MegaSys™ Telenium™, IBM®’s Netcool®, and Telcordia® OSMINE compatible systems.

BenefitsSimpleProtocol-independent optical layer products allow providers to deal with optical transport without worrying about evolving upstream and downstream technologies, protocols, third party equipment or other expectations. WaveReady’s focus on the optical layer results in dramatic simplification and reduced time and effort in installation and management. WaveReady WDM solutions can be installed and turned up within minutes.

Data rate and protocol agile interfaces and tunable small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers also reduce sparing costs.

ReliableTelcordia NEBS™ (Network Equipment — Building System) Level 3 certified products deliver best-in-class carrier grade performance and reliability — increasingly important qualities as more and more traffic travels down single optical fibers. The rugged, electrostatic discharge (ESD) resistant full card enclosures of WaveReady offer significant advantages in real-world deployments.

ScalableWaveReady brings flexibility and scalability to the network. Up to 88 optical channels can be multiplexed onto a single link. Amplifier, multiplexer/demultiplexer and transponder protocol and data rate independence delivers a smooth service and capacity upgrade path.

Low PowerThe low power requirements of WaveReady systems reduces operating costs especially for power, backup, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) in Mobile Telephone Switching Offices (MTSOs), Central Offices (COs), data centers and on customer premises.

Page 7: WaveReady CWDM and DWDM Optical Transport Products · PDF fileWaveReady CWDM and DWDM Optical Transport Products Unlock the True Capacity of Your Network with Cost-Effective, Flexible

7

Compact WaveReady’s compact shelves and modules minimize the rack space required for new services and service upgrades. Combined with the ability of WaveReady modules to pack more traffic and revenue onto each fiber, compact WaveReady systems deliver reduced infrastructure costs especially in MTSOs, COs, and data centers.

Standards-based ManagementThe default management system, Multi-Node Manager, can be used immediately on turn-up to manage WaveReady nodes and active modules right out of the box. WaveReady can also be integrated with third-party network management systems through the industry standard TL1 and SNMP network management protocols. Management commands and alarms are thoroughly documented, ready for integration into the most widely deployed commercial and custom management solutions.

Investment ProtectionProtocol-independent WaveReady WDM modules and flexible transponders are inherently compatible with current and future technological developments. Operating in the optical layer allows WaveReady to carry current and future services by adding new optical channels or changing the client input on an existing channel.

The WaveReady WDM transport solution has numerous benefits:

• Keeps the transport layer simple, reliable and scalable

• Maintains compatibility with existing services

• Adds new services and capacity

• Enables rapid turn-up of new services and revenue

• Provides a cost-effective method of transporting multiple services on a single WDM platform.

Figure 4: Channel in-fill on legacy network

Channel In-FillThe widespread adoption of Ethernet, CPRI, and other high-speed services at the wireless, access and metro edge has transformed the business of optical transport. The WaveReady channel in-fill system enhances the capacity and protocol compatibility of legacy networks by adding new wavelengths one at a time to existing fiber. This avoids replacing stranded assets that still perform their original function and reduces the need for CAPEX and forklift upgrades.

Channel in-fill offers significant savings over network fiber and equipment replacement or upgrades:

• Extends the life of existing hardware and fiber investments

• Reduces the cost and time to deploy for new services in the existing network.

Dispersion Compensation

Fiber Monitoring

WaveReady provides two types of dispersion-compensation modules: fiber compensation and Fiber-Bragg grating compensation.

Fiber compensation is continuous and suitable for shorter-reach applications where loss is not a critical factor.

Fiber-Bragg grating is channelized and has lower loss and is therefore more economical in longer compensation schemes (50 km and up). Fiber-Bragg compensation is also immune to high-power nonlinearities and is therefore ideal for applications where low loss or high power is required.

The BrightJack series offers a compact, modular solution for performance monitoring on optical fiber links. BrightJack enables system operators to isolate faults within the fiber plant to improve corrective action response time. BrightJack enables the monitoring of fiber health over time to address slow degradation in fiber performance before it results in unplanned service outages.

BrightJack operates independently from the client optical power and will not disrupt service should a power failure occur. Unlike Layer 2 performance monitoring solutions, which may not differentiate between equipment and fiber failure, the BrightJack monitors fiber-plant health from the central office (CO) without relying on electronics located at the far end of the link.

With interfaces for remote TL-1 or SNMP alarms over TCP/IP, visual alarms, and local telemetry alarms, the BrightJack is readily integrated into a wide variety of network management interfaces and ready to deploy right out of the box.

Protection

Transceivers

The WaveReady LPR-530 path and equipment protection modules are rugged, plug-and-play, bi-directional protection switches for single mode fiber (SMF). They can be used for both equipment and fiber protection. A typical application would be the protection of multi-channel links on SMF.

The LPR-530 module continuously monitors optical power on both the primary and secondary links. If optical power on the primary link drops below a certain threshold, the module switches traffic to the secondary link in less than 15 ms.

Two switching schemes are available. Manual operation allows for on-site or remote switching from one link to the other. Automatic operation in window switching mode allows users to control both the lower and upper level switch activation points. An automatic switchback feature resets the module to its original configuration when the primary link power levels return to normal.

LPR-530 features are highly configurable to fit most any network application. Configuration, using TL1 commands or GUI, is available through a System Controller module on the WaveReady chassis.

The full line of WaveReady SFF (Small Form Factor) MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) Pluggable Transceivers have all been qualified to work with WaveReady equipment under real world conditions. They provide the wavelength agility and reduced sparing costs required by network operators.
