Cyber COE

2015 IRAD & SI Outcomes and SummariesComputer Network Monitoring Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator

The Cyber COE has created a computer network monitoring data wall powered by LogRhythm’s Advanced Intelligence Engine (AIE) and their network monitor software. The data wall displays all corporate network traffic on multiple screens, as well as allowing for an in-depth packet and bandwidth usage analysis. The display also utilizes a Cyber Threat Map that provides situational awareness for the Riverside Research corporate network, showing malicious events on a world map.

Not only is this capability used to protect our network and proprietary data, but it may allow us to build a business line for Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) for government and commercial customers to secure their networks and information. CDM identifies cybersecurity risks on an ongoing basis, prioritizes these risks based upon potential impacts, and enables cybersecurity personnel to mitigate the most significant problems first.

Cyber Effects on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator

The Cyber research team explored cyber effects on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and created an Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration of cyber exploits on commercially available UAVs. This project conducted research using the Parrot AR Drone and Rolling Spider Minidrone. Our cyber experts sought to discover vulnerabilities in the datalinks between the UAV and ground control station, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking, and smart phones and smart phone-capable flight control software. These discoveries laid the foundation for further cyber research applicable to intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

Meetings & Conferences

Biomed personnel attended two important international conferences in May to present their latest research results. Drs. Jonathan Mamou, Jeffrey Ketterling, and Ronald Silverman attended the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology in Seattle from 1–5 May. The meeting is attended by more than 10,000 physicians and researchers with more than 75 countries represented. Drs. Mamou, Ketterling, and Silverman were lead author or co-authors on a total of nine talks presented at the conference. Topics included the characterization of vitreous floaters with ultrasound, ultrafast Doppler imaging of retinal blood flow, and acoustic-impedance measurements of ocular tissue.

During the same week, Dr. Daniel Rohrbach attended the biennial 10th International Conference of Ultrasonic Biomedical Microscanning (UBM) to present his work on measuring acoustic impedance of thin tissue samples using a 500-MHz acoustic microscope that was designed and fabricated in the Biomed lab. The UBM conference is an important venue for cutting-edge research in the field of high-frequency ultrasound and attendees consist of many of the key innovators in the field.

Congratulations Jen-wei!

On 6 March, former Biomed intern Jen-wei Kuo, a PhD candidate at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, successfully defended his doctoral thesis. Drs. Mamou and Ketterling were in attendance, and Dr. Mamou was a member of the doctoral committee.

Under the supervision of Dr. Mamou, Jen-wei was an intern in the Lizzi Center for Biomedical Engineering in the summer of 2014 for three months. During his doctoral studies and his internship, Jen-wei developed very elegant and powerful image-segmentation techniques, which were successfully applied to mouse-embryo and human-lymph-node images acquired using instruments and methods developed in the Biomed lab. This work led to scientific presentations at international conferences, peer-reviewed articles, as well as two provisional patents.

Honors & AwardsImpact Awards

Joanne Ward (R&D), Bryan Coffey (RAD), and Mary Plummer (R&D) received Impact Awards for their significant contributions in achieving the Boston Research Office (BRO) “Superior” rating from Defense Security Service (DSS).

Mary Plummer was recognized for her ceaseless efforts to reduce the classified document holdings at BRO. She teamed with security to focus on improvement areas and met with program managers over the last year to validate retention needs, document inventory, and ultimately reduced classified holdings by 68%. This significant accomplishment reduced security vulnerability and improved the efficiency and compliance of the BRO security program.

Joanne Ward was recognized for her significant improvement efforts to BRO’s security program. Her year-long efforts included forming a tiger team to address recommended improvement areas from her previous security assessment. This resulted in a 68% reduction in classified holdings, 400% increase in suspicious contact reports, and improved employee awareness. This ultimately culminated in the facility’s “Superior” DSS rating during her 2016 Vulnerability Assessment.

Bryan Coffey was recognized for his information technology assistance in managing and preparing multiple, collateral, stand-alone networks and SIPRNet systems for the 2016 BRO DSS Vulnerability Assessment. His enhancement efforts significantly improved compliance since the previous security assessment and directly contributed to the facility’s improved security posture. His management of the classified information systems raised government confidence in Riverside Research.

Personal Accomplishments

Katie Carbonari (RAD) participated in the 2016 May Queen Strongwoman Competition on 24 April in northern Virginia. This was her third strongwoman competition and her first time competing outside of the novice category. The competition consists of five events: clean and pressing a 125 lb log, deadlifting over 250 lbs, pulling a truck 75 feet, carrying 425 lbs on her back (yoke walk) for 50 feet, and lifting five stones (up to 220 lbs) onto 48 inch platforms. She exceeded her personal best on four of the five events and is looking forward to competing again this summer!

How would you feel if you needed medical attention but could not receive it because the nearest medical center was hundreds of miles away? Angel Flight East and Lifeline Pilots are two of the many non-profit organizations that provide families a glimmer of hope they will be able to receive medical treatment without suffering the consequences of significant travel expenses.

One of our very own Riverside Research employees, Ed Loxterkamp (IDS) proudly volunteers his time, talent, and airplane to these reputable organizations. If it weren’t for organizations like these and volunteers like Ed, thousands of people would not be able to receive the medical care they need.

Being a pilot is not the only way to get involved. Angel Flight East and Lifeline Pilots also look for volunteers to advocate their mission to clubs, groups, and other organizations. In addition, they hold special fundraising events where volunteers are always needed. Make a difference today and volunteer!

The Transition to Weekly Timecards

Riverside Research has transitioned from bi-weekly timecards to weekly timecards during the Memorial Day weekend. Please note payroll will remain on a bi-weekly basis. Weekly timecards will allow the company to accumulate hours worked on programs and to produce invoices to our customers on a timelier basis.

How does this affect you?

• All employees are required to submit a timecard every week for approval. Submissions are due each Friday, but as courtesy you are given until 10 a.m. Monday.

• Approvers need to approve timecards every week by noon on Monday.

• We will continue to have up to four weeks of timecards available for processing PTO in advance.

• Current “Comp Time” practices have not changed.

• Salaried employees must submit a timecard each week in order for payroll to process properly.

• For the rare circumstance when a salaried employee will have no hours to record in a week, an earning code of EMTY with one hour should be recorded. The EMTY earning code can be requested from Payroll via [email protected].

• The amendment process for weekly timecards is the same as the bi-weekly amendment process; however, any amendments for periods prior to 28 May will need to be handled through Finance.

Any questions should be addressed to Dave Junkins (Finance) at [email protected] or Nancy Kenney (Finance) at [email protected]. Any issues with JAMIS processing should be forwarded to our JAMIS Helpdesk at [email protected].

Daily Timecard Submission

As a reminder, it is also important to complete your timecards at the end of each work day. Timecards are considered non-compliant if not completed by 10:00 a.m. the following day so please remember to do so!
