DISTRICT 14 L LIONS NEWS Message from District Governor Gerald Chapman… March 2014 Lion Amy Higgins, Editor [email protected] Fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos, March is truly a month of great changes. Weather, daylight savings time, plant life, the aroma of organic farming at its best, the natural world coming to life,… to name some of them. March is a month when Lions actions and activities increase. Training sessions for officers begin. Region Socials occupy most weekends. Time to get those reservations in for the District 14L Convention on April 26th. Is your club bringing a basket to the convention to raffle? This is the most important event in the district with election of future leaders. Make plans to be there. This is a time when you can also socialize with fellow Lions. As Lion activities increase, we should have a plan to use them for membership recruitment. Do you wear something with a Lions logo on it, so people know there are Lions involved? Is anyone designated as a good recruiter to have applications on site and asking potential members to join? Every Lion is a recruiter, perhaps someone on light duty can dedicate their time to membership at your event. The PA Lions Convention, Lions Clubs International Convention, and USA Canada Lions Leadership Forum are important events in the Lions year, make plans now if you are going to attend. Thank you for the support the clubs have given me this year as District Governor. The community service work that is being done is amazing, just look at the activities section of the newsletter. I've been told that one good thing has come out of this winter weather. The amount of salt on the highway will keep road killed animals good to eat for a longer period of time. Yours in Lionism DG Gerald

WORLD LUNCH RELAY

April 4, 2014

12 noon Clubs can plan to have a luncheon, tea, fashion show, etc. to celebrate each club’s accomplishments and to recognize the importance of service and the rewards of being a Lion. This affair will begin at noon in New Zealand and travel throughout each of the time zones around the globe on April 4, becoming the World’s Lunch Relay.

After planning your club’s event, register the time and location with Lions Clubs International (LCI) by going to the LCI website. Remember to take pictures and share them on your club’s website, with the local newspaper, as well as LCI.   Banner patches will be awarded to clubs who meet the following criteria:   • Most non-Lion family and friends • Biggest food drive • Best lunch theme

Hello Fellow Lions, Lionesses, and Leos, We are two months into 2014, where has the time gone. Is your club active? Are you known as an active club in your local community? If I asked someone in your community about your club, what would they say? These are just a few questions that your club should be asking itself. Are the answers positive? I hope so, but if not then it's time to make changes. Ok I'm going to talk about membership. I know you are probably like "oh another green coat preaching about getting members. I'm so tired of this same old speech". I'll make this short, sweet, and simple. Without members the Lions clubs will fade away, new members bring new ideas, more hands make lighter work, fewer clubs equals fewer projects. The future of Lions is truly in your hands. Make growing your club’s membership a priority. I thank you for your service. Yours in Lionism, Michael Brown

SPRING will soon be here. This is a busy time for Lions Clubs. As I read the M&A reports, I’m amazed at the activities that all the clubs are involved in and the donations that go to many groups and organizations in the District. This is a good sign that our clubs are following our motto: WE SERVE. We are serving, but we are also losing members. We need to turn this around. There is information on the LCI Web Site or you can contact the District GLT and GMT TEAM or your Zone Chairperson for help. We need to get these numbers up. Since July 1st, we have dropped 81 members. We need to start bringing in new members. The more hands the more help we have. It’s not too late to achieve goals for membership for the year. All Lions, Lioness, Leos, and guests are urged to attend the District Convention, State Convention, and the International Convention, and also the Zone Socials that are coming up. All club presidents and secretaries have the forms to attend. It would be great to see a large attendance at all events coming up. Yours in Lionism, Anna Clark

From Lions Bill McLaughlin & Amos Shatzer…

We need YOU! Lions Amos Shatzer and Bill McLaughlin are lonely and need you to call, email, or otherwise contact them so that they can get you registered for what is shaping up to be a GREAT Lions gathering. The meat and potatoes of this convention will all happen Saturday, April 26, 2014 so you can have just a one-day event.

It’s convention time!

You don’t want to miss it! Our day will kick off with FREE coffee and doughnuts and the registration and certifications will be open at 9:00am.

A presentation from PCC Terry Mussleman on Membership/Leadership will begin at 10:00 am, as well as a ladies program, followed by a “How to Achieve Your Optimal State of Health” seminar at 11:00 am by Lanette Johnson

A luncheon at 12:00 pm will be our time to gather with friends to socialize.

Our Cabinet meeting beginning at 1:15 pm will give you an opportunity to learn what is happening in your district. You will have several opportunities to hear the Lions story and also learn more about District 14-L. Come hear the news! We will also have another ladies program at this time for those who wish to attend.

At 3:15 pm we will have a seminar presented by Leader Dog Field Representative Bunny Tabatt & Dixie.

And don’t forget to vote! Voting begins at 4:15 pm, followed by our evening banquet with keynote speaker Past International Director Wayne Davis from Winchester, Virginia.

All of these seminars are located in classrooms at the Juniata Valley High School* and the breaks between these meetings will be in the cafeteria where there will be leisure time, so even the graduate “couch potato” has no excuse!! There’s more to come and see, but you’ll never know if you don’t come and check it out. There will be tables in our display area and we have invited Beacon Lodge, Sight Conservation, Northeast Eye Bank, Pennsylvania Lions Foundation, Pennsylvania Hearing Research, and Huntingdon Hospital for Diabetes Awareness to attend.

What convention would be complete without a chance at the raffle baskets? You’ll never know if you don’t come!

Lion Linda Shaeffer has put together a splendid menu for this event: you will not be hungry! As with the tradition of recent conventions, you do not have to sign up for all meals. The luncheon at noon is FREE and our evening convention meal is just $15.00.

So the only thing to do now is contact Lions Amos Shatzer and Bill McLaughlin so that we can have everything ready for YOU! Latecomers are welcome too, but you won’t be sorry if you register early!

Five Quick Ideas for Membership Growth By Global Membership Coordinator PDG Bill Higgins

Following the membership growth success of last year, I must admit that I needed to catch my breath; but now I am reenergized and ready to get back to work on growing our Lions membership. Currently, despite bringing in 75 new members this year, our net growth is at -11. That being said, however, I am confident that, with a special effort from YOU, we can build on last year’s success and end up in the black for 2013-2014. In an effort to assist YOU in making that happen, I am providing five quick and easy ideas for growing your club’s membership. 1) Invite a friend to join you for dinner – this is an easy one, but truthfully, we talk about it much more than we actually do it. So, my challenge to you: as soon as you are finished reading this article, invite the very next person you encounter to dinner at your next Lions meeting. 2) Invite a friend to help with a club project – Nothing exemplifies what Lions do as much as a hands-on club project. While inviting a friend to dinner to talk about what Lions do is great, having that potential member participate in what Lions do is even better.

3) Make it a condition of a friendly bet – we are all busy and have countless obligations. We all have those few people who we have talked to about joining Lions, but they just haven’t pulled the trigger. The next time you are engaged in some friendly bantering over your favorite sports team, use Lions membership as collateral for a bet. For example, the challenge could go like this: “If the Steelers have a better record than the Eagles this year, I will buy you a steak dinner at the restaurant of your choice; but if the Eagles are the better team, you finally join the Lions.” 4) Quid Pro Qu0 – Everybody has a passion. Everybody wants or needs something from other people. The next time someone asks you to do something for them, after you do it, tell them they can return the favor by joining your Lions club. 5) Offer to pay the new member’s dues for the first year – While not all of us may have the financial wherewithal to do this, it is certainly something worthy of consideration. I have found that there are many potential Lions out there who are hesitant to join due to the financial commitment of membership dues. Bringing that Lion onboard for one year without the financial burden of paying dues just may pique their interest to the point that they will be sure to include Lions dues in their budget the following year. Hopefully these ideas will give you the ammunition and, more importantly, the motivation to get out there and recruit new members. Always remember to share your Lions story when recruiting new members. Tell them why you joined Lions, and how it has benefitted you. I look forward to updating you on our membership growth next month.
