WITH much anticipation Iheaded off to interviewRichard Gates. I had heard alot about this man from mywonderful Wave clients, andall of them bursting with ques-tions for me to ask him!

Richard was born on the outskirtsof London but his family moved toPerranporth when he was one, andhe lived there for several years. Heattended a school in Truro.

He began his working career inthe retail sector, starting off locallyand then branching out across thecountry with his wife Katherine invarious roles with firms includingAustin Reed and Henry Lloyd.

The Town Manager’s job came upand he jumped at the chance to getback to Cornwall. In his own words“I am now happily settled in Corn-wall with my wife and Son Jacob, who will be six in October”.

Firstly I asked Richard what hiskey roles are as Town Manager?

“It’s an operational role, that canbe everything from the events, which take up a large proportion ofthe role, and have increased since Istarted three and a half years ago, tothings like the hanging baskets andthe town standards.

“It use to be just a town centre role, but now my role covers the entiretown. Another key role is improve-ments to the area.”

With Falmouth Week almostupon us I was keen to know how heplans to manage all areas of thetown with forthcoming events?

“It’s always a balance, because thetown is very linear,. Falmouth week

is a classic example; we try and havethings going on throughout thetown.

“When planning I always tryand think of it from a member ofthe public’s point of view, but alsofrom the local businesses’ perspec-tive, and think ‘what would theylike to see?’ You can’t please every-one all of the time but it’s trying toget the happy medium.” (laughs)

One question thatkeeps being askedby many of myclients and people Icome across is whatis the difference be-tween your role andthat of the BidsManager?

The fact they areboth called Richard Ithinks only adds tothe confusion.

“A lot of peopleask that and it’s im-portant to say thatsome towns haveone or the other, weare quite fortunatethat we have both roles here.

“The essential difference with theBID (Business Improvement Dis-trict) is that all the business within ageographic radius, of Falmouth ofwhich there are 409, pay one percent of their business rates. Thatgoes into the BID for developmentwithin the town, and Richard(Wilcox) is responsible to the busi-nesses and the development ofideas.

“My role is much more opera-tional – there, of course, is somecrossover with events as BID helps

to fund some of the events. As thereis a lot of match funding, quite oftenRichard will come up with an ideaand I’ll have a look to see if I can helpfrom a town council perspective.”

I must admit the town centre looksa lot more appealing to the eye thesedays, but with a lot of high streetsgoing into decline I was keen to hearwhat Richard is doing to preventthis downturn happening here.

“We’ve been upto parliament;we’ve done a lot oflobbying. We fedinto the Mary Por-tas review, andpresented docu-ments detailingthings we havedone to help.

“For example thevinal images on theglass throughoutthe town – youmay remember thevinals on Wool-worths – it’s a verylow-cost way ofmaking somethinglook better in the

short term until the site is filled.

“A good example of this is the Mil-lets site which has been vacant forquite some time – we put somevinals in there a couple of weeks agoand have just heard from the agentthat the site has just gone underoffer.

“There are lots of people in thetown who help to make a difference. We are very lucky that we get a lot ofTV and radio coverage – we wantpeople to come to our town andenjoy the events.

“There is a lot of work that goes onbehind the scenes which peopledon’t see, and that makes Falmouththe success it is. There is so muchpositivity in the town and we domake a difference to how the townis perceived locally, regionally andnationally.

“We have lots of calls from manydifferent towns both locally, nation-ally and internationally – the fur-thest being Auckland in NewZealand – asking us what we do tomake the town a success. We alwaysneed to be punching above ourweight and looking at new ways topromote our town. We are very for-tunate to live in a geographicallybeautiful location, but you cannotjust rely on this.”

With the cruise ships this yearbeing a major economic boost to thetown, I went on to ask Richard ifthere are plans for this to continue?“Very much so, it is the biggestnumber this year that we have had, with 36 due in, and, of course, if weget the dredging done in the future, there could be significantly more.

“I have always been very positiveabout this happening, but it must bedone in the right way, and thiswould probably double the amountof cruise ships.”

I went on to ask him what thiswould do for the town? “Well, about 50% of the cruise passengersstay in the town with the averagespend per passenger being roughly£100, which is guaranteed money, with the remaining passengersgoing on excursions around Corn-wall, so not only Falmouth benefitsfrom this.

The Wave’s Ashley Wall interviews Falmouth Town Manager Richard Gates

‘People askus what wedo to makeour town

a success...’

What is on the horizon for prospering town?

“There is somuch positivityin the town andwe do make a difference to howthe town is perceived locally, regionally and nationally.”

Q What did you want to be whenyou were younger?A (laughs) I wanted to go in the

Navy, I didn’t get into the RoyalNavy but I got into the merchantNavy, I’ve always had love of thewater. I worked away on a gascarrier, I thought I would enjoy itbut I didn’t at all, it just wasn’tright for me

Q What’s your favourite thing todo on a day off?A Favourite thing has to be time

with my son, because the job is sohectic so this time is precious. Ihave a love of sports, I used tocaptain the county at hockey, Ilove surfing and sailing, butfamily time is so important to me.

Q Who is the most famous personyou have ever met?AWell I think is was Brad Pitt

when he was filming World WarZ.

Q What was he like? Was he hot?(I blurted... immediately wishing Ihad not asked this!)A (laughs) Ummmmm... He’s

quite short actually, but to behonest I was more interested tosee how the film was going.

Q Who would your three idealdinner party guests be?A It would have to be three

heads of state so you could firequestions at them all the time.Barack Obama, David Cameronand probably someone from adifferent county like Brazil.

Q What’s the most embarrassingsong on your iPod?A I can tell you straight away

(laughs), although a lot of themhave been deleted but I still haveIce Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice (maybetime to delete that one also), orthe Grease Megamix.

Q Moving swiftly on, and in adesperate need to reclaim some streetcred... If you could be anyone whowould you be?A This will be a bit different, but

I always thought the people whoown St Michaels Mount have agreat life. It’s not about being acelebrity – it’s more like being theking of your own castle.

Q Which person in history wouldyou most like to meet?AKing Henry VIII, just because

he is someone I remember frommy childhood; is he really like theway he has been portrayed.

Q What’s your favourite quote?A To be or not be, that is the

question. You get asked so manythings in this job, just so manythoughts and questions.

Q If you could throw any kind ofparty what would it be like?A It would have to involve the

water and the beach, just to relaxwith friends and have a goodtime.

Q If you choose anyone to be yourmentor who would it be?A There are a lot of people that I

look up to, but I think it has to bemy dad, he is no longer alive andwe did have our differences buthe would always help me and doeverything he can for me. Peoplein my family say he would bereally pleased I’ve got this job

with regards to helping the townetc.

Q What is the one thing youhaven’t learnt yet that you would liketo?A To be better at English

(laughs) It’s an ongoing joke, I cando lots of public speaking, but mygrammar has never been a thingthat has particularly helped me!

Q If you could be any fictionalcharacter who would you choose?AAsterix! Don’t ask me why

but I’ve always been fascinatedby Asterix from years ago.

Q Who was your childhood crush?AOlivia Newton John!Q What’s your favourite film of all

time?A I think it’s got to be the James

Bond films. The latest was reallygood, but I can pick several of thefilms that are really. Even thecheesy ones like Moonraker werebrilliant, but I think my favouriteis Skyfall.

Q Favourite James Bond?A I would say Daniel Craig...

just!Q Favourite Bond Girl?AHalle Berry!Q Who did you think is the sexiest

woman around at the moment?A Jessica Alba... some of these

answers I can rattle off so easily(laughs).

Q What’s the last romantic thingyou did for your wife?AGosh you are getting

personal now! Ummm what canI say that’s safe to say? (laughs) Itwould have to be for ourwedding anniversary, a nicecandlelit meal with a glass ofwine and some time to ourselves.

Q What’s next for Richard?A This is actually my ideal role,

not many people can say that, Ido enjoy the job, it is a lot of hardwork. I love coming up withideas to move the town forward. What is really important to me isbalancing my work life with myhome life.

I love all the Bond films– especially Halle Berry!

MYSELF and Wave EditorAdele Moore were recentlytreated to a wonderful wildlifeexperience with Orca Sea Sa-faris.

With our excitement buildingwe headed off to Events Square tostart our trip.

For us the fun started before weeven boarded the boat – ever con-scious of the little voice inside metelling me to be at the front of thequeue, we rushed to don oursafety gear and bustled for frontrow seats on the boat. Only to dis-cover that we were randomly al-located seats before we boarded!

However, I soon realised that itreally doesn’t matter where yousit – because every seat has exactlythe same view.

One word of advice, make surethe strap between your legs onyour lifejacket is not too tight, oth-erwise the view from behind andindeed the front is not for the fainthearted. So, dressed in our water-proofs and all aboard the RIB(boat), we set off!

Our captain for the trip was Rob(very pleasing on the eyes ladies)who started with a little history ofFalmouth Harbour, as well assome very interesting facts aboutFalmouth Docks.

Once out of the immediate har-bour the boat opened up and weheaded over to St Mawes. Wewere so lucky to be close to a pairof Peregrine Falcons and couldclearly hear the calls of the hungry

chicks. According to Rob the par-ents had been teaching theiryoung to hunt.

At St Mawes we also saw someshags. These funny little birdsstand with their wings spreadwide, a bit like jazz hands, whilethey dry off their wings – veryamusing.

From there we headed into atidal stream following some recentsightings of extraordinarilycoloured jellyfish. We were luckyenough to see the Blue Jellyfish. There were quite a few of themranging in size – the biggest beingthe size of a football. The blue jel-lyfish is usually found in the west-ern Pacific around Japan and offthe west coast of Scotland.

As well as other seabirds divingfor fish, including gannets andgrebe, we were treated to a dis-play from two helicopters fromRNAS Culdrose taking part in ex-cercises in the bay area.

Our trip was rounded off by apair of beautiful seals on BlackRock. Rob positioned the boat sowe had a great view – much to thedelight of everyone on the boat.

To sum up our trip, despite notseeing everything we wanted tosee – my daughter went on thesame trip not too long ago and haddolphins jumping around the boat– you can really appreciate thestunning Cornish coastline withthe added attraction of wildlifethrown in for good measure.

WORK Hard, Play Hard andGive something back …

That is how I finished my last ar-ticle. If anyone knows me theyknow that I am an extremely pro-active person both in my companyThe Core but also in our wonderfulFalmouth Community and be-yond.

Most recently, I have become a Di-rector on the Falmouth BID team. Inspite of me not owning a shop orbeing on the ground floor, I felt likedoing my bit for the community tokeep making a positive change.

As a small family business owner,I feel it is important to support ourlocal businesses, shop locally andinvest in our economy. High qualitycustomer service is key to a thrivingcommunity. Small enterprisingbusinesses WILL trade this nationout of recession.

So where are we located? Whereis The Core? “You always need tolook up!” Just follow the bunting onThe Moor and you can see me. TheBig Old Post Office Building. We arecelebrating a renewed lease andwill be expanding our facilities fur-ther we a second studio openingvery soon with some pioneeringnew programmes and health spe-cific courses available.

Why choose my club? Onceagain, those of you who know meknow that fitness and wellbeing ismy absolute passion. I am trustedand help people to get results. Ihave integrity and my entire teamknow their stuff!

I often hear: “You’re that Zumbalady aren’t you?” Or: “You do theexercise thing don’t you?”

We always tell you that we are somuch more but it is true. For yearswe have quietly saved lives, as-sisted in improving quality of lifeand have driven a fitness agendainto the NHS.

We are celebrating years of inten-sive training in Cancer rehabilita-tion, treatment of long-termconditions, back care, cardiac reha-bilitation and aiding neurologicalconditions.

My Pilates people will tell youthat we are nuts about preventingfalls and as for fat loss – well thephotos tell that story!

The bigger news is that now weare assisting in developing healthand fitness programmes in Zambia.

This includes teaching people tobecome instructors, working withtownship schools and empoweringZambian women with an educa-

tion and fitness programme. This isan extremely exciting opportunityfor myself and my team of trainers. We are really enjoying the opportu-nity to educate on health and well-being and this is also a positivething for Cornwall. We have had anabundance of local support and areusing Cornish suppliers to help uswith this long-term project.

After years of not being able toshout about the good work we do(down to the rules of the NHS) now

we can share the knowledge freelyand sing about being healthy.

We work hard to deliver qualityand excellence and keep striving forbetter. That is my “work hard” rule.

We have launched FITSTEPSwhich is fun and challenging andhave kicked off the programmewith a big fat party. That’s my “playhard” rule!

We can use the knowledge of ourtraining to contribute towards a

massive change in another culturesand continents.

Working in Africa is definitelypart of my mission to give some-thing back!

So what do you do in your daythat can make change and put asmile on someone’s face?

Why not choose your local healthclub, have fun with us and supportyour community!

THE free, family-friendly, communitymusic event in Kimberley Park

on August 25th and September 29th

Station Manager Matthew Rogers said of the event: “For me it’s simply the union ofcommunity and performance, and when that is combined with no additional cost then

we have very strong winning formula. It is what I loved about living in San Francisco, there was always something like this happening in a municipal park and it

was always free and the food was always good, but most wonderfully of all, thatmagic thing which you cannot buy, the ‘vibe’ was most excellent! And, that's what we've

managed to achieve in Falmouth – it just feels deeply satisfying and wholesome!”

Paul the Vet’s Pet Page...PAUL COCKERHAM MA VETMB PHD MRCVS

Has more than 30 years’ experience in both small animal and large animal

veterinary practice and is a director of Rosemullion Veterinary Practice Ltd

Caring for your pets, as much as you do...

HYPERTHYROIDISM is theterm for over activity ofthe thyroid glands.

It is a condition thatcommonly affects the older catbut is very rarely seen in dogs.

The cat has two thyroidglands which are found in theneck area either side of thewindpipe. In a normal cat it isnot possible to feel the thyroidglands, but in a cat withhyperthyroidism the enlargedglands can often be felt by yourveterinary surgeon as pea sizedand in some cases marblesized lumps.

It is quite common for boththyroid glands to be enlarged, although one may be moreaffected than the other, therebyfeeling larger.

The thyroidgland isresponsible forthe productionof thyroidhormone –that, inessence, controls thebody’smetabolic rate, and signsseen by owners in a cat withhyperthyroidism are due to theenlarged gland producing moreof this hormone.

Typical Signs

Hyperthyroidism is seenalmost exclusively in middle toold-aged cats and is rare in catsless than seven years old.

Affected cats usually developa variety of signs which becomemore severe as the diseaseprogresses.

The ‘classic’ signs ofhyperthyroidism are weight loss(despite an obvious increase inappetite, sometimes to almostmanic levels), increased thirst, increased activity, increasedirritability/stroppiness, andrestlessness.

Some other signs are mild to

moderate diarrhoea and/orvomiting, and possibly heatintolerance with your catseeking out cool places to sit.

When examined by your vet, your cat will have an increasedheart rate and commonly aheart murmur, where none hadbeen previously diagnosed, andthere will probably, but notalways be, a palpable swellingin the throat area.

The most noticeable feature, though, will almost certainly bethe amount of weight lost.

Secondary Complications

As stated, hyperthyroid catshave an increased heart ratedue to the excessive circulatingthyroid hormones – usuallymore than 200 beats per minute– and as the disease

progresses thiscan cause athickening of theheart musclewall. In severecases thesechanges canlead to heartfailure.

Anothercomplicationseen in

hyperthyroid cats is high bloodpressure, and if present, thiswill also need to be treated.

The good news is that oncethe hyperthyroidism is undercontrol, a lot of the cardiacchanges often improve.

Reaching a Diagnosis

If you or your vet suspectsthat your cat is hyperthyroid, the diagnosis can usually beconfirmed with blood tests tomeasure the thyroid hormoneconcentration.

It is also sensible to checkyour cat for other diseases thatmay be present at the sametime, such as kidney disease, which may affect treatment andoverall recovery.

On very rare occasions bloodtests do not give a definitive

diagnosis of hyperthyroidismand your cat may need to bereferred to a specialist centrefor special scans to evaluatethe thyroid gland and detectany abnormal tissue.

Treatment

There are two commonoptions for treatment:

Medical management (drugtherapy)

Anti-thyroiddrugs are availableas tablets andthese reduce theproduction ofthyroid hormones.Although theyoften control thediseasesuccessfully, theydo not cure it, solife-long therapy isneeded (usuallygiven once ortwice a day). Occasionallyside-effects develop to the drugtherapy and intermittentmonitoring of the level of thyroidhormones in the blood isalways recommended.

Surgical treatment(thyroidectomy)

Location of swollen thyroidgland pre-op.

Thisinvolvessurgicalremoval ofthe affectedthyroid tissueand canproduce apermanentcure, so it’s acommon treatment for manyhyperthyroid cats. However, even after successful surgery, signs of hyperthyroidismoccasionally develop later on ifpreviously unaffected thyroidtissue becomes diseased.

To minimise surgical risks, cats are usually stabilised onmedical therapy before beingoperated on. One of the

possible complications ofthyroid surgery is that surgerycan sometimes interfere withanother gland very closelyassociated with the thyroidgland, called the parathyroidgland, and cats need to bemonitored very closely for a few

days followingsurgery to ensurethat problems don’tdevelop in relationto this.

A third option fortreatment involvesinjecting radioiodineunder the skin whichthen accumulates inthe abnormal thyroidtissue and destroysit.

This is alsocurative and has the addedadvantage of no serious sideeffects and does not require ananaesthetic. Unfortunately it isonly available at specialistcentres, and your cat has to behospitalised for three weeks sothere is no exposure of you tothe radiation – and it is

expensive!The good news

is that althoughthe clinical signsof hyperthyroidismcan be quitedramatic, and catscan becomeseriously ill, mostcases arecompletely

treatable and cats usually makea complete recovery.

So, if all of the above soundsfamiliar, take your cat to yourvet today for a full check up. Allit may take is a simple bloodtest to confirm whether your catis hyperthyroid or not, and if itis, to get treatment started soyou can once again have ahappy and healthy cat.

OFFERING THE SUPERB

The importance of tyres

RECOMMENDED BY

THE importance of tyres – they’re not just blackand round.

New research has found more than 10 milliontyres used by British motorists could be pasttheir safe lifespan.

The study discovered that 59 per cent ofthose surveyed didn’t know their tyre displayedinformation about its age, with many being usedafter their recommended limit had beenexceeded.

In total only 17 per cent of UK motorists andcar insurance policy holders could accuratelyassess how old their car’s tyres were.

Roger Griggs, communications director atKwik Fit, has spoken about the dangers of oldtyres, saying: ‘We would recommend driversconsider changing a tyre that’s more than fiveyears old, even if it’s not down to the legal treadlimit.

‘At a glance it may well look like the tread isin top condition, but the structure of the tyremay have decayed over time – check for tell-tale signs of cracking on the sidewall. Andwe would remind drivers to include the spare,

which sometimes lays forgotten and unchecked. If drivers have a puncture, a perished spare willobviously be of no help at all.’

Wheel Alignment Xpress Garage and Tyre Centre, has been

awarded ISO 9001 along with PAS43certificates. This means it has the highestaccreditation within the motor industry formaintaining vehicles to the highest possiblestandards.

It is also an RAC approved repairer and aBosch diagnostics and repair centre, as well asbeing one of the most advanced wheelalignment geometry centres in Cornwall. Xpressgarage can MoT and service all types of vehicle, including classes 4, 5 & 7, and provide freecourtesy cars so you can get on with your day.
