What a great year it was. The high line is now complete all 7/16thʼ s of a mile of it. We have a new tractor helping to keep our railroad looking neat and well trimmed. The ground line has been re- ballasted all 90 tons of it. And the tower is 99% complete. The tower was a long time in coming, but good things happen to those who are willing to wait. And wait we did. The project started in 1999 with the founda- tion, which was pored in a driving rain storm. Jim OʼBrien then built the lower walls, Less Russel, Russ Steeves and my- self then added the oor above. There it sat for a while when Larry Micol stepped in and along with Jim raised the upper walls and roof. Larry also built the win- dows. Then it sat for a long time other projects being placed ahead of it. With the completion of the high-line that crew became available so its talent was put to good use completing the job. The outside is nished. The interior is about 50% at this time. The electric is installed and a wall heater is on the way. A big thank you is due to all those who helped. Jim OʼBrien, Less Russel, Russ Steeves, Bob Newcombe, Larry Micol, Dave Remington, Howard Baily, Jim McGrath, Ed Delaney, Don Cornell, Bob Fogerty, Roger Austin and others who made this all happen. Building the Pennsylvania A3 Switcher: A Progress Report

Itʼs been about a year since I last provided a status report. At that time, I was just fi nishing the last details on the ten-der and getting ready to paint it. Well, the painting is done. I even decided to build the carrying case for the tender, mostly as a protective measure, since I expect the locomo-tive to take a few years to fi nish.

I have made a good, albeit slow, start on the locomotive. The past year has been a busy year...but this is just an ex-cuse. Anyhow, I have completed the chassis, drivers, axlesand bearings, main and side rods, cylinders and most of the components associated with the cylinders. I did notcast my own drivers. I found that Rogers Cooke had rough castings for the A3 drivers, so I bought them but still didall the required machining. He also has castings for the cylinders; however, I elected not to buy them but rather machine my own. The most diffi cult parts so far have beenthe side rods. I, in fact, made fi ve pairs until I got a set to work properly. At fi rst I tried to make them by following Kozoʼs suggestions. He makes a drilling jig based upon the axle holes in the main frame. I found, however, that I could not drill the holes accurately enough from the jig...the side rods would bind while passing the forward/aft most positions even after opening the bearings a couple of mils. So on to plan ʻBʼ. I turned one of the failed side rods into a drilling jig by cutting it in half and adding an adjust-able splint. The adjustable rod work beautifully on the lo-comotive but again when I used it as a drilling jig, the fi nal product still bound in the same positions. So now for plan

A Railroad Station To The Future

Features of the new station

The Conceptual Design of the structure and the features of the station design are based on the survey of members wants and desires conducted several years ago during the planning and initial construction of what you see here be-fore you now.

The Station is planned to be; • About 20 feet wide and 60 feet long for a total area of approximately 1200 sq. feet• The structure is 20 feet high.• The interior consists of three main parts: • A kitchen area of approximately 200 sq feet; or 20 ̓x 10ʼ, • A main “Waiting room” approximately 600 sq. feet; or 30 ̓x 20ʼ, • A repair/ storage area of approximately 400 sq. feet, or 20 ̓x 20 ̓occupies the West end of the structure, & •A covered passenger waiting area extends from the East end of the structure.• The “Waiting Room” is envisioned as an open ceiling/ open area where different functions could / would be held. Indirect lighting and variable pitch fans complete with the environmental features. A coal stove is planned for “atmo-sphere”.• Two handicapped unisex toilets are located in the West portion of the station.• The building has a radiant fl oor heating system for winter service and the kitchen is air conditioned in the summer when the ʻDawg days of Summer ̓reach New England.• Bay window appear on the North and South sides of the Station. The North side bay forms the Main Entrance and

the South Bay forms the “Operator” Bay from which thechub and meet information is disseminated.• The building is designed as an energy effi cient installation with the high “R” value walls 6” thick, a high “R” valueroof and energy Effi cient windows in excess of 6 feet high to take advantage of natural lighting. Motion sensors will turn off the lights if we forget to!• The kitchen staff will take your order trackside and deliver you food order from the two East End windows. They willhave a gas fi red grill, stove and two ovens in conjunctionwith counter, storage cabinets, refrigerator, freezer, and 3 sinks!

Schedule

We envision the Station to be developed into a fully de-signed and constructible project during the Fall of 2004.

Our Review and Permitting efforts with the Town of Hol-liston is expected to commence after the First of the year2005 and will take upwards of nine months.

We anticipate a Construction Start at the 50th AnniversaryMeet in August 2005 with the major portion of the founda-tion, shell, and heating system, constructed by outside con-tractors through a competitive bidding process. The interior fi nishes and completion of the station is currently plannedto be accomplished by the club.
