On behalf of the Waupun Area business community and many local non profits, I would like to say “Welcome to Waupun.” This guide is intended to show off what our community has to offer. It features information on all the things that make our city and the surrounding area a great place to shop, work, live and play.

This year marks the 175th Anniversary of the City of Waupun. There are a wide variety of events happening throughout the year, so whether you are here to visit or you are already part of our community, there is sure to be something that appeals to you.

Waupun is located near the Horicon Marsh which is home to thousands of geese, ducks, birds and other wildlife. A short drive east on Highway 49 will allow you to see a variety of wildlife and plants that have made this area famous.

The City of Waupun is proudly known as the City of Sculpture because it is home to an outdoor gallery of bronze statues. Featured in the gallery is James Earl Frasier’s renowned “End of the Trail” sculpture. It is a national historic landmark depicting the plight of Native Americans. Five pieces in the gallery were

sculpted by Waupun Industrialist, Clarence Shaler. These pieces are on display in various locations throughout Waupun.

Waupun has a wide variety of businesses including several chain stores, many specialty stores and a variety of service and industry businesses. A Chamber business directory is located near the back of this book. We ask that you support these businesses because they proudly support the community by sponsoring events and activities plus many of their owners and employees spend countless hours volunteering. Our local businesses are a huge part of what makes Waupun a great place to be and they ask that you help them support the community by shopping local whenever you can.

Waupun is open for business and we invite you to spend some time with us.

The museum is in the Waupun Carnegie Library and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is nearly 110 years old.

Come and see a large Shaler collection, explaining not only his sculpture, but his life businesses. Statues done by Shaler on display inside as well as outside the building.

Also available are pictures and material from the founders of Waupun, the Wilcox family.

The museum also features a military room that contains material from the Civil War to today including a large picture of the WWII Waupun Honor Roll, a very large collection of Waupun memorabilia and samples from many of the businesses that no longer operate, a corner devoted to the Prison which came to Waupun in 1851, a large collection of Native American memorabilia, a dentist office complete with X-ray and chair, material from the Waupun Fire Department, a collection of Grange material, and other objects too numerous to mention. The 25th Chrome Anniversary of Waupun Truck-n-Show will be held Friday, Aug. 8 and Saturday, Aug. 9

Inspiration for a truck show in Waupun began many years ago after some community members went to an event called “Touch-a-Truck”. While many see “big rigs” rolling down the highways, “Touch-a-Truck” enabled spectators to see the awesome vehicles up close and even look inside.

While trucks are crammed in every corner of the Truck-n-Show

grounds, there’s just enough space left for everyone to relax and enjoy the bands, food stands, exhibits and beverages of-fered throughout the weekend.

Over 50 exhibitor’s booths, located both inside and outside the Waupun Community Center, offer information, products and career opportunities in the trucking industry. Collectible t-shirts and miniature trucks with the Truck-n-Show logo, along with other unique and interesting souvenirs can be purchased. More information will be available on the groups website closer to the even.

The Waupun Truck-n-Show is a nonprofit organization run completely by volunteers. Besides putting on a fantastic show, organizers take pride in raising money for Special Olympics, Make-a-Wish Foundation and for a local family with financial needs due to illness.

American Red CrossThe American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human

suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteer and the generosity of donors. They focus on five programs including: Disaster Readiness & Response, Services to Armed Forces, Preparedness, Health & Safety, International Programs and Blood Services.

Always available 24/7/365 to respond to disasters, the Red Cross know that if they can prevent them, especially residential fires, they will have a safe and more resilient community. Through community disaster education programs, community members are encouraged to be prepared for emergencies with three easy steps: keeping informed, having a plan, and having an emergency kit.

Volunteers and staff give free presentations to community organizations, at adult residential centers and schools. This year, they will kick-off the youth “Pillowcase Project” for kids. Presentations are age appropriate, includes tips on how to prevent and be prepared for emergencies.

Our Services to Armed Forces program supports military members and their families. Locally, this past year, 1,436 military personnel and their families received assistance ranging from validated emergency communication to Get To Know Us Before You Need Us classes and post-deployment support.

In addition, their Holiday Mail for Heroes program exceeded their goal to bring the holiday spirit to active duty personnel on military bases (and even ships) around the globe plus to the local Veterans living independently and at the King VA Facilities.

The Red Cross also offers life-saving classes that vary in length and level of expertise desired from hands-only CPR to new and refresher classes on CPR, how to use an AED, etc., to helping professional meet OSHA licensing requirements, (including first responders) are available. In 2013, they also taught the Nursing Assistant Training program to 436 extended-area students who are pursuing their dream of being a Certified Nursing Assistant and beyond.

Waupun Food Pantry

Bargains Galore thrift store began serving Waupun and surrounding communities in august of 2001. The mission of Bargains Galore is to raise funds for Central Wisconsin Christian Schools (CWC). The store is proud to be recognized as one of the best thrift stores in the country because of the friendly home-town service, unique ever-changing merchandise, quality and affordable items, creative displays, organization, cleanliness and commitment to the community.

In turn, people travel from all over to be part of the Bargains Galore experience. In fact, each Thursday morning upon opening the doors at 10 a.m., you will see droves of diehard bargain hunters lined up – excited to find that perfect treasure.

Bargains Galore partners with the Waupun food pantry,

helping area residents in need of clothing, furniture, etc. additionally, the store helps victims of fires or other catastrophes by providing families with free merchandise. Bargains also works with the area correctional facilities, giving away clothing to those who are being released from prison who have no street clothes.

Waupun Food Pantry is located in the middle of Waupun. Their aim is to be accessible to all who need a helping hand. Everyone has a desire to be able to support their families in health, prosperity and wellness; but life can be unpredictable, this is where the Food Pantry can step in.

The Waupun Food Pantry operates under Proverbs 22:9 –“He who has a generous eye will be blessed, For he gives of his bread to the poor” and also Proverbs 21:13 – “Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard.” They are strong words, but they are necessary for this ministry.

The Waupun Food Pantry helps with food, clothing, household items, coats and boots to help families alleviate the cost of raising

a family or the elderly trying to make ends meet on a very small income.

They also provide a community garden for those who want fresh vegetables. In the summertime, we pass out bag lunches to children who otherwise might go without.

The donations they receive come from churches, businesses and generous individuals who trust us to use the resources with wisdom and compassion.

The Waupun food Pantry says that they believe in all that they do and stand by those they serve, according to a group press release.

In the 5 years that they have been open, they have adopted out 580 cats & kittens, 150 dogs, reunited 322 dogs and cats with their owners and have worked with local Rescue Organizations for placement of 13 dogs.

The Board of Directors consists of Barb Berry (President), Dr. Bev Martens (Treasurer), Trista Steinbachj (Secretary), Chanda Ganz (Member), Pam Summer (Member), and Nancy Vanderkin (Member). Carla Peters and Cindy Amacher serve as Co-Mangers at the Shelter.

The Maple Knoll Veterninary Clinic in Waupun provides all of our medical treatment for our animals. Dr. Julie Johnson, Dr. Bev Mar-tens, and the Vet Techs are a great support team for our Shelter. Every Monday, either Dr. Johnson or Dr. Martens, along with Katie VandeSlunt (Vet Tech), comes to our Shelter to administer vac-cinations and provide health maintenance for all of our animals.

Our Fundraising Coordinator, Melanie Spaeth, plans our Brat Frys, Pooch Parade, and Annual “Chilly” Dinner. Those interested in helping with the fundraising may contact her at (920) 960-2737.

Our current “Wish List” items are: paper towels, first-class stamps, tall kitchen garbage bags, trash-can size garbage bags, and monetary donations.

4-H Club: Achievers (Dodge Co.)

4-H Club: Weeping Willows (Fond du Lac Co.)

As America’s largest youth development and empower-ment organization, 4-H has over seven million youth mem-bers. Enrollment is open to all youth first grade through one year post high school, regardless of race, color, sex, creed, disability, religion, or national origin. Whether you live in the city, town, or country, 4-H is for you!

The Achievers 4-H Club, one of 24 unique clubs in Dodge County, is a volunteer-led organization in the Waupun area. It was established in 1945 as the Chesterfields 4-H Club and changed names to the Achievers 4-H Club in 1950.

The leaders involved with 4-H youth are active members of the community who volunteer due to their passion for helping youth gain self-confidence and empowering them to become active in community service projects. Both of these

put action into the 4-H Motto: “To Make the Best Better.”Club meetings are held the first Saturday of each month.

Each meeting includes a younger member activity, a com-munity service activity and refreshments for members to enjoy together. These fun learning experiences help youth and adults acquire communication and leadership skills, and appreciation and understanding of citizenship and a solid foundation of life skills.

Research has shown that youth who participate in 4-H do better in school, are more motivated to help others, and de-velop critical life skills.

Contact: General leaders Lorna O’Donovan, (920) 904-5483 and Kim Pokorny, (920) 324-4319

Website: dodge.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development

4-H is a nationwide youth leadership organization, en-riching youth, families, and communities through citizen-ship, leadership and life skill experiences. Sharing, doing and learning together is what 4-H can do for boys and girls. 4-H is open to all youth K-13, regardless of race, color, sex, creed, disability, religion, or national origin. Whether you live in the city, town, or country, 4-H can be for you.

As we celebrate Wisconsin 4-H Centennial in 2014, the Weeping Willow 4-H Club, one of many unique clubs in Fond du Lac County, continues as a volunteer-led organization of the Waupun area. Current membership includes the sur-rounding communities of Fox Lake, Brandon, Rosendale, Oakfield and Fond du Lac.

The leaders involved with 4-H youth are active members of the community who volunteer because they simply enjoy helping the kids develop useful and confidence-boosting skills as they grow. The 4-H motto is “To Make the Best Bet-ter.”

Club meetings are held on one Saturday each month in which the club hosts a fun activity in a safe and supportive environment for its youth, which can include swimming, hay-rides, campfires, roller skating, bowling and pizza parties.

These monthly meetings are not only fun, but also meant to be a learning experience, which helps youth and adults

acquire a positive self-image, good leadership skills, and the ability to communicate with others.

12 2014 Waupun Area Visitors Guide - Fond du Lac County and Dodge County

Girl Scouting is the place for girls to have fun and try new experi-ences. Girl Scout Cadette troop 8506 from Waupun led by troop leaders Heather Ripple and Pam Cousineau continues to do just that.

Over the years, the girls have explored their interests together like participating in a horse training session, camping at Girl Scout of Manitou Council’s Camp Evelyn, going on an overnight at The Mall Of America where they slept under the shark aquarium, and exploring the Cave of the Mounds investigating fossil & rock iden-tification.

The troop also values giving back to their community. Each year they participate in the “Adopt a Family” program for Christmas. In past years, the troop has facilitated a food drive for the local food pantry and collected supplies for the animal shelter. In the future the troop is planning to earn the babysitting badge and to try their hands at kayaking and canoeing.

Girl Scout volunteers serve as a partner and role model to girls, who discover their own skills and abilities, meet new people, and “learn by doing” alongside girls at every step.

“My favorite part of being a leader has been watching the girls grow and mature. I also enjoy seeing the girls learn- while having fun doing it. I choose to volunteer because I truly enjoy working with the girls. I feel like I am making a difference in their lives, and helping to teach them independence, values and fun in some areas they don’t get to experience at school, or at home” said Heather, troop leader of Girl Scout troop 8506.

At Girl Scouts, every girl is to be so excited about her future that she can hardly wait for it, because she knows she can achieve any-thing she sets her mind to. That feeling starts with one day, one meeting, or one role model that shows her she can accomplish more than she ever imagined.

Cub Scout Pack 3777

Girl Scouts

2013 has been a great year for Troop 711. Two young men ad-vanced to the rank of Eagle Scout. In February, Harley Stevenson was the first scout since 2002 to advance to Eagle Scout and in August, Tim Wardlow followed with his achievement of Eagle. In order to be an Eagle Scout, a Scout must complete 21 merit badges, community service, a lot of different first aid, knots, orienteering, compass work, and many other things. He must also complete a leadership project that benefits his community, church, or school. Harley’s project was a fire pit with benches for Edgewood Community Church in Waupun for use by church groups and families. He also had all the picnic tables painted. Tim deconstructed and constructed a bridge for Marsh Haven nature center. He widened the bridge so the maintenance crew would be able to get the mower over to keep the paths clear. This year the group anticipates two to four new Eagle Scouts to emerge with several more on their heels.

This past summer five members attended the National Jam-boree in West Virginia. It was the first jamboree held at the new location called The Summit. The boys spent four days in the na-

tion’s capital touring the Capitol, museums, and Arlington cem-etery. While at the Summit they took part of some community service and had the opportunity to do many different activities such as: BMX track, skateboard track, zip lining, patch trading, and so much more. The Troop 711 boys came back excited and ready to tell all of us about their adventures.

The troop took part in Celebrate Waupun and ran Kidz Zone along with a monkey bridge and some blacksmithing by one of the adults. They took part in community service activities both as a group and as individuals, went to summer camp earning a total of 36 merit badges, marched in area parades, and assisted with our local Cub Scout Pack.

In 2014, they will have new Scouts crossing over from the pack in March, once again help with Celebrate Waupun, and as-sist with other events for the 175th anniversary of Waupun. The biggest event will be a showing of the Honor Flight movie and celebration of the veterans on Nov. 15.

The troop wants to thank all of the surrounding communities and citizens of Waupun for their support of Scouting.

Pack 3777 is the local Cub Scout pack in Waupun. Over the past few years the pack has been in rebuilding mode and has become a strong, vibrant pack. With the strong leadership of Cubmaster James Clark and his assistants Erin Anders and Tyler Witte, the group has a great direction and more and more members every year.

Cub Scouts are the younger version of Boy Scouts of America. Members can join when they are seven years of age, or when they enter first grade as Tiger cubs and continue to advance every year until they reach fifth grade in which they become Webelo II scouts and in February or March of the fifth grade year, they crossover to Boy Scouts.

Cub Scouting is family based and parents are strongly encour-aged to be actively involved. Every level of the program requires family participation for advancement to the next rank. Waupun has a great group of parents that volunteer their time as den lead-ers and various officers and that is what is needed to keep a pack

strong and healthy. In 2013, Pack 3777 helped with the Kidz Zone at celebrate Wau-

pun, gathered food for Scouting for food, and participated in area parades and flag ceremonies in Waupun and Fox Lake.

Every year the Pack has many fun activities. The Pinewood Derby is held in January and is a wooden car race. The first, second and third place winners advance to districts and there are also prizes for most original, best in class, and best overall design. In February, they celebrate Scouting’s birthday with an awards dinner and each den presents a skit and a song, March brings the Raingutter Regatta which is a boat race in which you build a wooden boat with a sail and blow on the sail down a gutter. During the winter they participate in Cub Scout Winterfest and in the summer Day Camp which is held in July. They are looking forward to joining Troop 711 on a trip to Gale-na, IL. for some camping and fun at the Ulysses S. Grant Pilgrimage.

Pack 3777 thanks all who support Scouting in our community.

The Waupun Area Garden Club is a non-profit organization whose goal is to educate people about gardening and landscaping and also to beautify Waupun. An annual membership fee of $5 is used to defray expenses of postage, paper supplies, speaker fees, etc. Come and learn with us!

Garden Club meetings are held on the second Monday of the month in September, October, November, March, April and May. Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. at the meetings, guest speakers and/or members teach us about some facet of gardening. On the second Saturday of February, we attend the Wisconsin Garden expo in Madison. In the summer, Garden Club members work in

their own gardens and do community garden projects including planting and maintaining “sign” gardens in the Waupun parks, a truck planter by the Community Center, and a large stone garden in forest Mound Cemetery.

Waupun’s newest park, Harris Mill Park – across the Mill pond from the end-of-the-trail statue, has an area that the Garden Club members have developed into a special garden. A granite statuary fountain is the focal point of the garden. Members are asked to help in maintenance of the Harris Mill Park Gardens.

WARP was started in 2010 as a grassroots, not-for-profit group made up of area business owners and community minded individuals from the Waupun community and surrounding area. WARP members want to develop, promote and maintain the recreational, environmental, historic, economic and quality-of-life assets offered by the Rock River, Horicon Marsh, City of Waupun and surrounding townships.

WARP’s most recently completed project was the creation of a nine-hole disc golf course in Waupun County Park. The course reused the baskets from Tanner Park’s course and was one hundred percent funded by WARP through the donations and the fund raising of its members. The new course is a challenging wooded course and has been very well received by the area disc golf community. WARP has hosted two Ace Race events and more are planned for the new year. The first annual disc golf league is starting this spring, more details can be found at the Waupun Disc Golf Association’s Facebook page.

WARP has been working to expand the bike trails within Waupun.

The group hopes to continue expanding the trails and eventually create a biking corridor that joins with the Wild Goose State trail, providing a safe path for families out for a weekend ride.

WARP also worked with the City of Waupun and the Chamber of Commerce during the information gathering, planning, and development phases of Waupun’s new Aquatic Center. Ground was broken in 2013, and the facility is set to open in early summer of 2014.

Ryan Mulder, the new president of WARP, said, “WARP is just a group of citizens that are doing what we can to give people a reason to get off the couch. Sitting on the couch kills people. So let’s give people a reason to get off of it!”

WARP continues to grow and thrive due to the support of the community. Our inspirational projects and fantastic members are working hard to find ways to create fun and affordable recreation opportunities available to all Waupun residents.

Kiwanis Club

Rising Sun Grange

Rotary Club

The Waupun Kiwanis Club has been a proud supporter of the Waupun community since its founding in 1929. Our membership is comprised of people of all ages and all walks of life, but all of us have one very important thing in common – the desire to serve.

In 2013, Kiwanis participated in several projects including: coordinating quarterly Red Cross Blood Drives at Edgewood Church, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Meals on Wheels, Volksfest Pancake Breakfast, Special Swim for Special Kids, highway cleanup (Hwy 49), Waupun Bike Rodeo, and sponsoring monthly Junior Kiwanians at our meetings.

Through fundraising, Kiwanis was able to support the following programs this year: purchasing iPads for local students with Autism (see photo above), Yell and Tell safety program at Meadowview Primary, Honor Flight, Union/Youth for Christ, Holiday Help, Swaddle Blankets for newborns at Waupun Memorial Hospital, Cub Scout Pack 3777, Waupun Food Pantry, Waupun Little League, Badger Boys & Girls State and was able to present four college scholarships to WHS and CWC seniors.

The Waupun Lion’s club is part of Lions Club International, which is the largest service organization in the world, with 1.35 million members in 206 countries. While their primary focus is on service to the visually impaired, funds raised by the Waupun Lions also support many community, state, national and international causes. Additionally, the Lions have broadened their focus to include programs aimed at diabetes education and prevention.

Some of the Waupun Lions fund raisers include Community Calendar sales, Vegas Night, a pancake breakfast at the Waupun Truck N’ Show, a golf outing and brat frees.

The motto of the Lions is “We Serve.” Some members of the Waupun Lions serve as transporters of cornea tissue for transplants between Fond du Lac and Madison. Some members serve on missions to Mexico and Central American countries providing vision testing and provision of used eyeglasses to those who need them. The Club collects used eyeglasses for this cause.

Some of the funds raised by the Waupun Lions go to the Lions Eye Bank in Madison, which prepares donated corneas for transplant. Funds also go toward operational expenses of the Lions Camp in Rosholt, which provides a camping experience to children and adults with visual impairments, diabetes and developmental disabilities.

The Waupun Lions Club also annually awards a two or four year $750 renewable scholarship to a high school senior who attends school within the Waupun Area School District

Community, family and agriculture are the three major goals of the Rising Sun Grange.

The Dictionary Project is the group’s main community service. In person, Grange members give each third grade student in the public and private schools in the Waupun area a personal dictionary. Nicknamed “Words for Thirds,” the service has become an annual gift to the children of the community. Other service projects include sponsoring a community night for all citizens, usually held during April Grange Month, donations to the Waupun Food Pantry, and other worthy causes.

Educational displays on agricultural topics, for example, are also frequently displayed at the Waupun Public Library.

Membership is open to all men, woman and youth with varied educational programs and activities for all family members. New members are very welcome. Developing members’ potential and leadership is an important opportunity. Currently addresses of members include Waupun, Brandon and Oakfield.

The Grange is a grassroots organization and the Rising Sun Grange prides itself on submitting resolutions for consideration regarding public welfare, education, as well as agricultural issues, and provides a non-partisan voice in state and national legislatures. The annual state-wide convention is held in Reedsburg in late September, and the Rising Sun Grange is always well represented. Several members also hold offices in the Wisconsin State Grange.

The Waupun Rotary Club is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

“Service above Self” is the motto Rotarians live by. Locally the Club contributes to the Waupun Food Pantry, serves meals at the Community Table, hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt, hosts Jr. Rotarians from the WASD and CWC High Schools, and assists with missions in the third world countries as well as many other projects.

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal organization for Catholic men. It was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney March 29, 1882. The international headquarters is located in New Haven, Connecticut. Led by the Supreme Knight, the chief executive officer of the Knights, the office provides administrative support and leadership for more than 14,000 local units.

The Waupun Knights of Columbus was organized by John C. Burke in the late 1950’s and chartered February 7, 1960.

The Council now bears his name in honor of him and the other gentlemen who originally founded this council. The John C. Burke Council 4897 was formed to render financial aid to members and their families, and now has expanded to offer assistance to church and community as well.

The Council annually has fund raisers such as the fish fry at St. Joseph Parish Center in Waupun, brat frys, the state charity raffle for the Harley Davidson motorcycle, and the Drive for the Intellectually Disabled.

Some of the funds raised by the Council are used to send disabled children to camp, sponsor punt, pass, and kick competitions, sponsor free throw competitions, help people with catastrophic emergencies, aid the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, sponsor Badger Boys and Badger Girls, provide food, coats, and money to the Waupun Food Pantry, and provide scholarships.
