description

Waukesha Choral Union, Ernest Brusubardis III music director, presents “Lessons and Carols.” These concerts are comprised of traditional carols, holiday favorites, and an audience sing-along. Performances are scheduled for December 7, 2012 at St. Luke’s Church in Waukesha, and on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at St. Catherine’s Church in Oconomowoc. “‘Lessons and Carols,’ presented in two beautiful church settings, provides a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas,” said Brusubardis. “Sing-a-longs, carols, and songs from cultures around the world, interspersed with readings, will encourage us all into the spirit of the holidays and to live it as well.” Selections to be performed include “The Holly and the Ivy,” “Kling Glöckchen!” “The Danish Star Carol,” “Stille Nacht,” and “Betelehemu” a Nigerian carol. The audience will be invited to sing along on “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”

FROM THE PRES IDENT

From the President

Merry Christmas!! Maestro Brusubardis has gathered a magical selection of holiday favorites that we hope you enjoy hearing as much as we have enjoyed preparing and presenting it.

During this season of joy and thanksgiving the Waukesha Choral Union wants to express its appreciation to all of its supporters. To all of our donors, sponsors, advertisers, and you the members of our audience—Thank You. We could not continue to share beautiful music without your support.

While we certainly hope that you will attend each and every one of our concerts, I would like to extend an extra-special invitation to our concert coming up May 4, 2013. Please help us extend this special invitation to your friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

May’s concert will complete a two-year collaborative effort by the WCU to present a world premier artistic presentation. From a contest among middle and high school students throughout Waukesha County we have selected a six-part text written by Waukesha South student, Abby Lewis. Local

composer Paula Tillen is now in the process of writing a commissioned piece of music for the Waukesha Choral Union. It is our plan to supplement the musical presentation with visual art works, also created by Waukesha County students. It

promises to be a truly memorable experience for audience and singers alike.

Waukesha Choral Union has been musically active in the community for over 60 years. WCU was featured in WISN-TV’s Season to Celebrate broadcast during Christmas of 2011. Originally a combination of Carroll College students and community singers, WCU took its present form as an auditioned choir in 1978. Recent collaborative partners include the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Bel Canto Chorus, Milwaukee Choristers, Carroll University Choirs, and the choirs of Waukesha South High School, Muskego High School, and Hartford Union High School.

FROM THE aRTISTIc D IREcTOR

Thank you for taking time during your busy holiday season to enjoy a bit of good music. In fact what better respite is there during such a time than to attend a choral concert? Sing along with a couple of traditional carols and listen as we present carols from Denmark, Germany, Nigeria, and other traditions.

This time of year evokes memories of youth, old friends, and family. We hope that our selections help to make your holiday experience bright and cheerful so that you can take the spirit of Christmas home with you and share it with all whom you know.

With all of the sadness and gloom that exists in our world, it is our responsibility as musicians to soothe the human spirit and your duty as recipients of that blessing to pass it on.

May we all have a calm Christmas and a bright and Happy New Year.

St. Luke’s Lutheran Church was foundedover 80 years ago. The first church buildingwas the

red brick structure that faced Grand Ave. The present building was dedicated in 1966. Baptized membership is over 2000. The church offers a full range of programs under the three main points of their vision statement “Connecting, Growing and Serving.” The Fine Arts Ministry Team shares the vision of making St. Luke’s a center for the Fine arts in downtown Waukesha and is thrilled that the Waukesha Choral Union is here tonight.

St. Catherine of Alexandria Church wasfounded by Irish immigrants in 1847. The current worship space was constructedin 2000.  The original worship space is now the church’s Gathering

Area. The many beautiful combinations of old and new in this wonderful renovation and addition include the restored Stations of the Cross, the original altar, and parts of the original painted glass windows. In recent years, as the physical structure of the church has grown, so has its membership, expanding from about 120 families in 1994 to nearly 1000 families today. The congregation’s mission is to welcome everyone, to be a “spiritual home away from home.”

THE l aST wORD

Wired for SoundBy Oliver Sacks, MD

Oliver Sacks, MD, the noted neurologist and author, describes the profound bond between music and our brains and how the simple act of singing can be good medicine—especially as we age.

It is not surprising that nearly every culture has evolved its own musical traditions to celebrate the holidays. Music brings us together in song and dance, in ritual and play. It inspires and consoles us. It is a way to pass down traditions from generation to generation. And holiday music is especially powerful because we hear it from earliest childhood

and associate it with family, warm gatherings, special foods, smells, and sights.

Humans are uniquely able to produce and enjoy music—very few other animals can do so. But not only is music one of the fundamental ways we bond with each other, it literally shapes our brains. Perhaps this is so because musical activity involves many parts of the brain (emotional, motor, and cognitive areas), even more than we use for our other great human achievement, language. This is why it can be such an effective way to remember or to learn. It is no accident that we teach our youngest children with rhymes and songs. As anyone who can’t get an advertising jingle or a popular song out of their head knows, music burrows its way deep into the nervous system, so deep, in fact, that even when people suffer devastating neurological disease or injury, music is usually the last thing they lose.

The right sort of music can literally unlock someone frozen by Parkinson’s disease, so that they may be able to dance or sing, even though, in the absence of music, they may be unable to take a step or say a word. For many people with aphasia, a loss of the use of language most commonly caused by stroke, songs can be the key to retrieving words they cannot otherwise utter. I have seen people with extreme forms of amnesia who are unable to remember what happened to them a few minutes ago but are nonetheless able to sing or play long, complicated pieces of music, or even to conduct an orchestra or choir.

Perhaps most remarkably, people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can respond to music when nothing else reaches them. Alzheimer’s can totally destroy the ability to remember family members or events from one’s own life—but musical memory somehow survives the ravages of disease, and even in people with advanced dementia, music can often reawaken personal memories and associations that are otherwise lost.

Researchers are only beginning to study the secrets of why and how this happens; for now, we simply know that music is a powerful therapy for those with nearly any kind of neurological problem. Music is much more than a beautiful luxury: It is a fundamental way of expressing our humanity—and it is often our best medicine.
