Sept 2013..
Wow its hot! It’s about time! I’ve been waiting all year for it to feel like summer and now it’s finally here. What a great time to beat the heat by getting out and boating safely! I recently had family visiting with two toddlers that we took aboard our boat. Boy was I proud to be able to borrow a pair of child sized PFD’s from the WSPS supported rack of free PFD’s at the Waukegan Harbor Administration Build-ing. Not only did they allow us piece of mind regard-ing their safety while under way but they also have handles on the back that came in handy when trying to keep them out of the spokes of the helm wheels! OK let’s talk about something serious - it’s time to get your reservations and payments into Jim Moran for the upcoming...

You’ll find an entire page on our newly revamped web site dedicated to the event at this link: www.wspsboating.org/cr. Here you’ll find infor-mation on the weekend schedule, the delicious meals that the Waukegan Yacht Club is preparing, as well as the incredible cutting edge watercraft demonstration planned for Saturday afternoon 8/10. Click on the video link, sit back and watch a presentation of the event while being serenaded by a boat music track. We’ve also includ-ed the information in this newsletter on page 9 for your conven-ience. We look forward to seeing you there! Meanwhile, Sean Sullivan has a bunch of things planned for us during the heat of the boating season. Next up is a Beach Party scheduled for Saturday 7/27 in Kenosha. This coincides with The Taste of Wis-consin which has lots of food available. We went last year and I was amazed at the myriad of tastes and activities available. This will be a fun time and you’ll find details in your inbox regarding specifics. Keep an eye on the web site calendar as we load

up additional events! By the way, Elisabeth and I did our first lake crossing last week and it’s the first time I was able to see AIS technology in action. I watched the display as a 732 foot freighter bared down on Paul Green and I as the calculated closest point of approach kept getting smaller and small-er. With the data on the screen I was able to communicate with the captain to confirm our intent which he appreciated. No sense coming into port with remnants of two pleasure craft dangling from your bow after all...

Pleasure Boating
It’s summer, so activity at the Waukegan Harbor increases as boaters flock to Lake Michigan. There are those “number cruncher” type boaters who are out to lower their “cost-per-outing” from what sometimes is an embarrassingly high num-ber to something that makes reasonable sense to them (non-boater’s are sure to shake their heads in disbelief!). Then there are other boaters who are out on the water for business, like charter boat Captains. But the vast majority of Lake Michigan boaters from Waukegan Harbor are just out for fun. It’s the “fun factor” that’s important to these folks, so the more time on the water = more fun experienced. That why it’s called pleasure boat-ing!
Why do fun-seeking skippers enjoy taking guests out on their boats? They want to share the fun we experience when out on the water under nice con-ditions, in a sea worthy vessel, armed with knowledge of its operation. Boat owners assume that their guests will have fun, but this is not al-ways the case.
What can skippers do to help make the outing fun for our guests? First, make sure the weather con-ditions are appropriate for guests. When they ar-rive aboard, give guests a short tour of your boat so they can lend assistance if something goes wrong. They should know where life jackets and safety gear is stowed and what to do in case the skipper becomes incapacitated or, even worse, ends up overboard. Show them how to operate the head. Remind them that sometimes with all the noise in a cockpit shouting is necessary form of communication and not a criticism of guests when asked to help.
If you constantly adjust the sails for maximum per-formance with a cockpit full of guests on a pleas-ure cruise, your guests can get a bit testy when the sheet keeps getting yanked from underneath

Hi Folks!
It’s July! This is the pinnacle of our boating season. Whether we are “Hooking”, “Macking”, cruising or just relaxing at the water’s edge, it’s that time. You owe it to yourself to make sure you have some fun this summer with your fellow Power Squadron mates.
27 July is the 3rd Annual Island Time Beach Party . Each year this event gets bigger and better. This is the kind of event you can make a day of or stop in for an hour. The shel-ter we reserved is located a short walk or quick ride from Ke-nosha’s Taste of Wisconsin Festival. Food, music, carnies… You name it’s just 10 minutes south of our gathering place.
Many of us bring our boats. There are several options for making it ashore. Many will dock on the wall by the Kenosha Yacht Club; others anchor off the coast and dinghy ashore. Some even make a weekend of it and get a slip in the harbor. There’s a lot to do in Kenosha and Saturday the 27th is going to be a great day to do it. More information follows on the next page…..
See you there!

them every time they just get comfortable. Guests can feel the same way if you are trying to execute a perfect tack and bang into them while frantically jumping across
the cockpit. Maybe a little more tolerance for a slightly out-of-tune sail or a sloppy tack trumps opti-mum performance. Only your fellow skippers on the water will notice the slightly sloppy sailing. Cover up your boat name with a tarp and wear a disguise so this is not a problem! The power boat folks are not immune from similar skipper hyperactivity. Warn your guests when you are about to go full throttle or when you “show off” the full-speed turning capabilities of your boat.
For most all of us, taking guests out is supposed to be “pleasure boating” with emphasis on pleas-ure for both guests and skipper. I occasionally fall victim to over exuberance in the cockpit and am contemplating placing a “Pleasure Boating” placard in the cockpit to remind myself my mission with guests aboard. Hopefully, my skipper’s conduct and boat handling will not require guests to figure out why that placard is there! It’s the journey we are working on with all hands on board sharing the fun of pleasure boating.

Ahoy from the editor's desk!
Recently my husband Gary and I took some folks out on a boat ride, nothing different than what many of you do every weekend. But this was different. A couple weeks ago we received an email from a new acquaintance made while he photographed the “Dinghy Poker Run” at the Waukegan Harbor.
He indicated his family was coming to visit in late July and wondered if it was too much to ask for us to take his family on a short boat ride. He went on to explain that his nephew didn’t have much time to live and they were trying to give him every experience possible while they have the chance.
As our hearts broke, we wholeheartedly agreed to take his family out for a ride. We had no idea how gratifying a short boat ride could be or how fast you could love strangers. What a wonderful family and a wonderful day! Until October...safe boating!
