CULTURAL LESSONS
MAKE STUDENTS
STRONGER
What an incredible week!
The Aboriginal boys from Wauchope High
School had a rich and intensive collection of
cultural and vocational experiences around
Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Crowdy Head
National Park from the 6th to the 10th of May -
thanks to the generous support of Birpai Land
Council, Generation One and many local com-
munity businesses and organisations.
The 2 intensive career days were followed by
a 3 day camp that focused on the personal
and cultural journey of becoming strong, suc-
cessful Aboriginal men within our community.
18 boys participated in the careers sessions which included: resume writing, ca-
reers in Healthcare, Fitness/Personal Training, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Metals
engineering and fabrication, CAD design, starting your own business, working in the
music industry, National Parks, TAFE options and general advice about opportuni-
ties and support available and following your passions into employment.
10 boys were then brave enough to ‘go bush’ with Jeremy ‘Yongurra’ Donovan who
shared his life-story, the ups, the downs and inspired them all to believe and hope
in the future. Jeremy is a world-renowned didgeridoo player whose talent and pas-
sion has enabled him to travel and play all across the world. Side by side in day to
day camp living and then as a group around the camp-fire, Jeremy’s yarns about
his culture saw the boys gradually opening up, forgetting their shame and walking in
the pride of their heritage. It was touching and powerful to have a man whose cal-
endar includes meetings with, Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbott, Queen Eliza-
beth and the Dali Lama spending time sleeping rough in a swag on the ground to
enhance the lives of our young men.
Campfire yarns were led by Jeremy Donovan who shared his troubled past all the
way through Yolongu initiations into manhood and now success as an artist and
business person. His stories highlighted key turning points and principles to equip
the boys to made better choices on their journey into the future. Jeremy also seam-
lessly involved the other men on the camp; Steve Donovan, Louis Burns, Brad
Hagelstein and Jimmy Layton all who had wisdom to share, a story to tell or skills to
teach. The days were also enriched by the wisdom of local Aboriginal mentors;
Jimmy Layton and Steve Donovan. Uncle Louis Burns from Wiradjuri Country
(Dubbo) taught the boys how to make didgeridoos and was supported by our local
didge-maker and player; Brad Hagelstein.
Special thanks to Birpai Land Council, Generation One, New Song Studios, Sea
Acres Rainforest Centre, ChickenCaravans.com, Eggert Agri Partners, North Coast
Area Health, National Parks, Port Macquarie TAFE and Mid Coast Connect for all
your generous support and contributions to this special week. Mr A. Lord
