2. GlossaryPeripherals - Auxiliary devices used either to physically or wirelessly connect Wattbikes to the PC.

ANT+ - A Wireless communication protocol mainly used by fitness based technology and equipment to transfer data from one device to another

Firmware – The bespoke software that runs on the Wattbike Performance Monitor. The Wattbike firmware file format is a .bin.

MMP - Max Minute Power. Is either the average power sustained in the 3’ Test or the average power for final full minute of the Maximal Ramp Test.

MHR – Maximum Heart Rate. The maximum heart rate achieved during a maximal test.

3. Minimum System, Set up Requirements & InformationTo effectively* run Power Cycling SE the minimum PC system requirements for 4+ bikes to run over USB hubs or ANT+ are: • Windows XP, 7, 8 & 10 • 2 GHz CPU • 2 Gb RAM • 50 Mb Hard Disk Space • Display Resolution 1024 x 768 and upward. *Wattbike cannot guarantee the stability of the software on systems running inferior specifications to these. It is recommended that the PC being used has specifications that exceed the minimum requirements.

Peripherals and Hardware needed The specification of the USB cables, Powered USB hubs and ANT+ dongles will have an impact on how smoothly a session will run. Using low specification peripherals can reduce the overall performance and user experience of Power Cycling SE.

ANT+ connection set ups require: • 1 x ANT+ dongle, or: • 1 x ANT+ Booster • 1 x PC with Power Cycling SE installed • Any number of Wattbikes with firmware 1.23.0x and greater installed.

USB connection set ups require (depending on how many bikes are being used): • 1 x PC with Power Cycling SE installed • 1-3x Powered USB hubs • Any number of Wattbikes with firmware 1.23.0x and greater installed • USB shielded cables

Studio Environment/ Arrangement & Bike set upArrange the bikes in a configuration which ensures: • All riders have a good view of the big screen • Creates a dynamic environment for the riders • Ensures a sound, unbroken ANT+ signal to and from the bikes.

A Word on Signal Interference ANT+ like all wireless technologies can suffer from interference from nearby sources such as Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, small substations etc. that can disrupt the user experience with drop outs and data lags. If possible, ensure there are as little to no potential interference devices/ sources near the room where the bikes are being used. A normal ANT+ dongle has a range of 10m, all bikes will need to be in range of this to work.

Page 6: Wattbike Cycling 3.0 user gui… · 4 Wattbike Power Cycling Studio Edition 3.0 User Guide 03/2016-v1.0EN 2. Glossary Peripherals - Auxiliary devices used either to physically or

6 Wattbike Power Cycling Studio Edition 3.0 User Guide | 03/2016-v1.0EN

ANT+ BoosterIf a set up suffers from interference, drop outs or the set up struggles to maintain a good connection to all bikes an ANT+ booster can be purchased separately from Wattbike. The ANT+ booster: • Increases range to 20m+ from 10m • Helps with drop outs and data lags • Increases the capacity for bikes from 8 to 20+

USB Connection and WiringWattbikes can be linked via USB to Power Cycling SE. Linking bikes over USB is advantageous where ANT+ performance is poor and or where ANT+ is not suitable. At all stages when connecting bikes up to Power Cycling SE via USB premium peripherals (USB powered hubs and cables).

Gym IndexingWattbikes monitors with firmware 1.23.02 and above can be assigned a frequency within the ANT+ bandwidth, doing this improves the reliability of the set up. To set each bikes index: On the main menu highlight ‘ANT Channel’ -> Simultaneously press the Left & Right arrow keys -> Assign each bike a consecutive number.

ANT+ Set up DiagramThe wiring diagram below is a graphical representation of ANT+’s propagation in a studio space.

Page 7: Wattbike Cycling 3.0 user gui… · 4 Wattbike Power Cycling Studio Edition 3.0 User Guide 03/2016-v1.0EN 2. Glossary Peripherals - Auxiliary devices used either to physically or

wattbike.com @wattbike /wattbike /wattbike

ANT+ Connection Considerations • A studio with any more than 8 bikes should purchase an ANT booster • Normal ANT+ dongles can reliably cope with 8 bikes, given the space in which 8 bikes can occupy in a studio space and the limited capacity of the dongle it is recommended for set ups that with 9 or more bikes they purchase booster.

USB Connection Diagram

USB wire connection Considerations for USB set ups: • Powered high specification USB Hubs are needed • Each hub should have a maximum of 6 bikes per hub • Each hub should only have one other hub being daisy chained to it • There should be no more than two USB hubs connected through to each USB port on the computer • Cables trailing on the floor and up the bike must be secured and protected/ covered or run under the floor.

4. Getting Started & ModesInstallation1. After downloading the Software installation program, open the install program and follow the on screen install prompts.2. Once the program has installed, launch it and select the type of monitor you would like to use. Model A monitors - need to be connect to the PC via USB for them to work.

Activities Power Cycling SE has 3 Activities: • Group • Free • Race

Group ActivityThis activity is a collective session that every bike is started and finished by the instructor operating the software. This activity is best suited when all bikes are connected via USB.

Free Activity (Recommended for most classes)This activity is a flexible class session that allows riders to join and leave ad lib. This mode is by far the most popular and effective activity. For example, if riders are late to a class they can join when they arrive without the instructor having to restart the session.

Race ActivityThis activity is a distance only race portion of the software. Allowing the riders to race over distances greater than 50m.

Closing Power Cycling SE To close the Power Cycling SE click the power icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

• To change the dials’ metric or eject a person from the session right click on the dial and select close person (to eject) or click on another metric to display. • With MMP & MHR data, classes can be run by colours and Zones. It is obvious which rider is out of zone based on the colours. • If the set up is wired via USB double click on the dials of a rider to display their live polar view. This will not happen for a wireless set up.
