BE YOUR OWN FAIRY TALEWorking with Storytelling for Positive Life ChangeAlison Davies

In this practical and inspiring book, professional storyteller Alison Davies shows how to use fairy tales as powerful tools for personal development. From Sleeping Beauty, symbol of transformation, to the ‘rescuer’ Prince Charming, to the scary but dynamic wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, the characters in these fabulous stories are embedded deep in our imagination and conjure up feelings that we can all identify with on some level. We can use fairy tales to understand what really makes us tick, to access our primal nature and rediscover the latent power within. They can help us to break bad habits, overcome obstacles and emerge from the chrysalis to make our mark in the world.

Alison Davies is an author, columnist, freelance writer and professional storyteller. She runs workshops on tapping into the power of stories for personal development.

Tales of Transformation In this chapter we look at states of transformation and how fairy

tales can help us through the process of change in any area of life.

We consider different types of transformation, from the big sleep

to the evil fairy’s curse and how characters deal with this. By

looking for inspiration in the stories, we can not only apply the

steps used by the hero or heroine to our own life, but also use the

lessons we learn from these tales to help us move forward more

quickly and smoothly.

chaPter fIve

Fears, Desires and Phobias

Fairy tales contain every manner of bad behaviour, from

deception and malice to jealousy and lies. Because of this, they’re

great tools for addressing some of our deeper issues. They provide

a safe framework that we can use to explore our fears. In this

chapter we examine our deep desires and come face to face with

our unhealthiest phobias. Most importantly, we learn how to use

these to tales to change the way we think and act, so that we can

move forward feeling confident and empowered.

chaPter two

Starting Out In this chapter we explore the hero’s quest, the great journey of

life that we have in front of us, and how we can use this as a

guide to help us undertake our own adventures. In particular, we

look at how to unleash our inner hero and celebrate everyday

victories. We also discover how we can use the hero’s journey as a

blueprint to reach our goals and fulfil our true destiny.

chaPter Seven

Creative IdeasIn this chapter we look at more creative ideas that you can try

every day to unleash your inner storyteller and make your dreams

a reality, for example forming a storytelling circle, working with

memory tales and using stories to problem-solve in every day

situations . We also explore different types of stories and how to

use them effectively to empower ourselves in every day situations

and engage with others. We examine other ways to use our

imagination and transform our world through language, as well

as working with other types of traditional tales, such as fables

and folk tales.

chaPter four

Love and RelationshipsSome might argue that fairytales are not the best blueprint when

it comes to romance. That’s not to say that love isn’t present or

true within these stories, but that some of the patterns the

characters follow might be considered at best out-dated, and at

worst, unhealthy. But that’s not strictly true. In this chapter we

examine the stories more closely with regard to matters of the

heart and the true nature of love. As you’ll see, they can teach us

a great deal and by applying the narratives to our own situations,

we can break painful patterns and find a way forward.

THE LOST TEACHINGS OF THE CATHARSTheir Beliefs and PracticesAndrew Phillip Smith

Centuries after the brutal slaughter of the Cathars by papally endorsed Northern French forces, the medieval Cathars continue to exert a powerful influence on both popular culture and spiritual seekers. Yet few people know anything of the beliefs of the Cathars beyond vague notions that they believed in reincarnation, were vegetarians, were somehow Gnostic, and had some relation to Mary Magdalene. The Lost Teachings of the Cathars explores the history of this Christian dualist movement between the 12th and 14th centuries, offering a sympathetic yet critical examination of its beliefs and practices.

Andrew Phillip Smith is the author of several books and articles on Gnosticism, early Christianity and esoterica. He is also editor of The Gnostic, for which he has interviewed or included articles by people such as Alan Moore, Colin Wilson, Patrick Harpur, Sean Martin, and Stephan Hoeller. He also writes occasionally for Fortean Times.
