It is our pleasure to market this historic Grade 2 listed Victorian mid-terrace townhouse in the Cobridge district of Stoke-on-Trent, once home to the acclaimed novelist, playwright and social commentator, Arnold Bennett (1867-1931).

Dubbed the ‘Poet of the Potteries’ and the ‘Edwardian David Bowie’, Bennett was a figure of considerable political and cultural influence. The Savoy Hotel in London

still has an omelette named after him. In1918, he refused a knighthood.

As the blue plaque on the wall testifies, despite later moving to London and Paris, Bennett was a true local champion and the area and its people featured in many of his works, most notably the novels Anna of the Five Towns, The Clayhanger Family and The Old Wives’ Tale.

Built in 1879 on instruction of the Bennett family, the double-fronted, three-storey house benefits from a stunning Gothic-revival frontage and all you would expect of

a large Victorian house: walled front garden; 6 bedrooms; 3 bathrooms; 3 reception rooms; large rear yard; and a full-height cellar.

In 1960 the property was opened as the Arnold Bennett Museum and regularly hosted events attended by Bennett family members, scholars and admirers alike. After the Museum closed, the property once again become a privately owned residence.

The current owners purchased the property in 2011, and have extensively renovated and faithfully restored the period features including skirting, decorative

mouldings and cornicing, and Minton tile flooring. Although now a private home, the property retains its historic HMO licence.

The area has a good range of schools, colleges and universities: St Peter’s Catholic Academy, North Road Academy and Forest Park Primary School are all within easy walking distance; and Staffordshire University is accessible by the local bus service.

The area is served by the M6 (J15), the A34 and the A53. A regular bus service reaches local destinations, while there are rail stations at Longport, and Stoke-on-

Trent, which provides access to the national network. Air travel is available at Manchester Airport (24 miles).
