relax and be free from distraction. We’ve installed a silent nurse call system that will ring for assistance without the headache of constant beeps. We have also installed blackout curtains, for more restful sleep, secure Wi-Fi, an extended cable package and a personal phone so our clients can stay con-nected. With the large open spaces, dining Bistro, an abundance of warm sunlight and a private and relaxing atmosphere, clients have likened Waterford Rehab’s amenities to those of a resort!

Why do what we do? It’s important that we never forget how we got

to where we are today. The generations we serve made many sacrifices and opened so many doors for my generation. I am eternally thankful for that and I come to work, not only because I love our residents as if they were my family but also as a thank you for everything they have accomplished and conquered. We have some really amazing residents whose lives would blow your mind. Listening to their stories about their careers, fami-lies, mission work and walk with God is humbling and fulfilling. It is a privilege for me to come to Waterford Place every day.

How does one access Waterford Rehab Center?

The majority of our clients are being admitted from the hospital. They simply need to tell their discharge planner that they want to rehab in a private room at Waterford.

During March, Home Services had a madness of their own. It was a slam dunk success!

Up to 29 “players” attended each of the 4 wellness classes at the Sunset Auditorium.

The “Coaches” included Home Services professionals each headlining different weeks.

• Gayle Byker, MSW and Mary Bollman, RN on health advocacy and identifying emotional issues.

• Stephanie Smit, PT on Bladder Health.

• Linda Timmerman, OT on Gizmos and Gadgets for Your Life.

• Jen Edwards, PT and Kristi Robinson, RD on Physical Health and Hydration.

The crowd was spirited and engaged, cheering on the players each week. Refreshments were served and reviews were fantastic.

Disappointed you missed the game? Interested in rebounding your health? Ever wondered what Home Services can do for you? Call 616.667.4663

Similar classes are scheduled at Waterford this fall! Look for the mailer this summer.

Lesson #1: Hold on to dear friends in Christ, for these are the bonds that last.

After 73 years together, it is clear that Bob and Dorothea have the joy of friendship and unity that comes from a lifetime of togetherness.

Lesson #2: Our past builds our character, it doesn’t define our future.

Both Bob and Dorothea came from broken families. It is interesting that the difficulty that broken homes created did not define their long life together.

Lesson #3: Never stop learning.

As the winds of World War II were beginning to blow, and be-fore being drafted into the Navy, Bob’s faith began to take root and grow. His desire to know God more stays with him to this day. Their end table is stacked with Bible study and theological books, some of which have been read more than once.

Lesson #4: Talking, espe-cially about faith, is fertile soil for a fruitful marriage.

Their first date was on the Staten Island Ferry. They found out early that they could talk to each other, especially about their faith. Dorothea reflected, “As we were growing spiritually we were also growing together.”

Lesson #5: Be encouraged, men, even after 73 years of marriage we still can’t read our wife’s mind.

Dorothea remembered why she fell in love with Bob, “Bob was so different. … It was just that we were growing spiritually. I never saw Christianity in that form before and it was refreshing and different.” Bob added when the question was posed to him, “We grew together worshipping together.” Dorothea laughed and interjected, “I wish he would have said, ‘it was because I was sooo beautiful.’” Bob quickly replied, “Of course.”

Lesson #6: Invest yourself in a Bible believing Church

Bob and Dorothea enjoyed church. Their church family was always a central part of their life. They attended Grace Reformed Church, Immanuel Reformed Church and are now members of Seventh Reformed Church. Bob has served as a deacon, elder, Vice President of Consistory and

teacher. Dorothea also taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and has been active in the church women’s groups.

Lesson #7: Get to know Christ deeply, so you can withstand the sea billows of life.

When asked, “What was the best advice you could give to a young couple?” They both re-plied, almost in unison, “Put Christ at the center.” Life is full of good and bad. “The hardest thing we have ever had to deal with was the death of our son, Timothy.” Bob and Dorothea got that awful call Thanksgiving Day 2007 letting them know that their only son, Timothy, died suddenly from complications with lung cancer. Dorothea went on, “We’ve had some hard times and some good times. If Christ was not at the center we might not have made it.” Engraved on their wedding rings is Hebrews 13:20 & 21.

Although their family is far away, they are so glad they chose to live at Sunset Villages. They love it at Sunset. “Glad to be here. It is the right time in our life. We met some fine people, everyone is like family” Dorothea shared.

Bob and Dorothea, we are so glad you are part of the Sunset family. Your testimony, spirit, and genuine love for each other and those around you are examples for all of us.

We pray the Lord’s continued blessings on your marriage. And as you remember your 73 years together, may your hearts be filled with gratitude for God’s goodness. God bless you both.

Christ at the Center On March 28th, 2016, Bob and Dorothea Lutz, Sunset residents

since 2012, celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. Their lifetime of memories gives testimony to the power of love and commitment and the deep faith, hope, and joy of unity. Here are seven (7) lessons their 73 years of marriage can teach us all.

With Admiration, Your loving Sunset Family

Christ at the Center Opportunities for Everyone at Sunset

Anyone who has recently searched for a job in the healthcare field in the Greater

Grand Rapids area has observed that there are more jobs than qualified healthcare workers. This is a great opportunity for those looking for employment in the healthcare field, but one that could put healthcare employers in somewhat of a predicament. In typical Sunset fashion, we have “taken the bull by the horns” and determined to be a leader in the industry for those we serve.

One of the innovative ideas that the Sunset team has developed is teaming up with Walker Medical Instructional Services to sponsor qual-ity team members to go to school to be a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant). The Brookcrest campus has hired people that have always aspired to be a CNA and offered them the opportunity to do so through a RCA (Resident Care Aide) to CNA program. These individuals were handpicked by the Nursing Leadership Team and HR, and have been doing a fantastic job serving and caring for our residents at Brookcrest.

The Sunset team also offers opportunities to those desiring to be nurses or wishing to further their nursing education. Sunset has a tuition reimbursement program that assists

not only nurses, but also others on the team looking to further their education in healthcare. Brookcrest, in particular, offers a unique opportunity to nurses who want to further their education via the “Mary O’Hara Scholarship”, in addition to the reimbursement program.

Sunset also has its first ever AIT (Administrator in Training) Program. This program is offered internally to qualified can-didates who desire to become a Healthcare Administrator. Within the program is book work, mentorship and job shadowing with organizational leaders, organizational projects, and a partnership with the Michigan Leading Age VIP Leadership Academy. Emily Foster, Director of Recreational Therapy at Brookcrest is currently enrolled in the program and is excited about the opportunities ahead!

We truly believe in cultivating and investing in quality leaders and team members within our organization. I am very proud to say that Sunset has chosen to serve its team of employees as a ministry to help better serve our residents.

Four years ago, I decided to add strawberry plants to

my garden. My rationale at the time was that I enjoyed eating strawberries, but mostly I wanted something that would be low maintenance that I wouldn’t have to plant every year. Most nights I spend some time out in my garden pulling weeds and tending plants. Lately I have begun noticing how the strawberry plants expanded into the space designated for beans and broccoli. I also noticed that almost all of my strawberry crop came from that small area where the new plants were growing. So I made a trip to our local greenhouse to ask some questions and was told that every few years I needed to re-place some of the old plants with new shoots in order for them to keep producing.

Recently I began the process of replacing old plants that were producing nothing with some new shoots from another part of the garden. The Lord brought to mind James 4:17 “Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” I was reminded of the times in my life when I worked diligently at removing a habit that was not good for me either physically or spiritually, only to find that there was still a certain feeling of emptiness.

It wasn’t enough for me to only stop doing bad things. There was another step that I needed to take which was to replace the “old plants” with good “new plants” that would bear fruit. Colossians 1:10 tells us “… that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work”. I not only remove the unholy things in my life, but I also need to remem-ber to begin developing new

things that will bear fruit. If you ever feel the need for some new insights from God, maybe you should start a garden.

Our ministry at Sunset offers a wonderful variety of ways for “bearing fruit in every good work”. It can come in the form of time, deliver-ing meals, leading a class, giving a ride or just listening to those who feel alone and without a purpose for life. Or possibly you may, by God’s grace and through your life experiences, be called to use your wisdom and abilities to serve on our boards and committees. Many of us are able to serve others by supporting Sunset financially. The gifts we receive help to ensure that the people we serve receive the compassionate care and services they deserve. But let me caution you, serving seniors can become very habit-forming.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION BANQUET

April 13th & 14thThe Volunteer Appreciation

Banquet celebrated 387 vol-unteers and guests. The food was great, the fellowship was rich, and the entertainment left us amazed. Dr. Magic, Dr. John Dykstra, entertained us with his humor, sleight of hand, and quick wit.

This year’s theme was, “Service beyond self.”

It says in 1 Peter 4: 10, “Each of you should use what-ever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

At Sunset we are blessed to see God’s Word being lived out every day through those who serve our residents and seniors within this community.

Author Brian O’Connell wrote in his book, America’s Voluntary Spirit, “A very large part of America’s attractive voluntary spirit stems from our religious heritage. The lessons are as varied as the religions of the hundreds of groups that came and still come to our shores. The common root of these varied

testaments is an awareness that service beyond self is both an obligation and a joy.”

Sunset volunteers’ service and experiences prove that universal truth every day.

Sunset’s mission is to pro-vide quality services for senior adults in a spirit of Christian love.

The Meals at Home volun-teer drivers were highlighted at this year’s event. Next year our Meals at Home program will celebrate 20 years of service. From this program, several examples of obliga-tion and joy can be found…

Our volunteers provide a critical touchpoint for homebound seniors to have daily contact with the outside world.

Our Meals at Home Volunteers;• drive about 38,000 miles a

year,

• 7 days a week,

• delivering over 500 meals to

• 241 clients in sun, rain, and snow.

Even when gas prices topped out at $4 /gallon, no one complained; their calling was greater than the price of gas.

Since its inception, the pro-gram has only suspended ser-vice 8 times due to weather, much to the disappointment of the volunteers who would go out in any weather.

Meals at Home employs almost 170 volunteers, but that’s only the start. Volunteers make up our Board of Directors, work in Life Enrichment and Recreational Therapy, and do the jobs of Greeters, Drivers, Companions, and Friends.

As a local, Christian, non-profit organization we are so proud and honored that our volunteers are not only obligated to their duties, but take great joy in what they do.

It is with great excitement that I share with you that Sunset has been named one of “West Michigan’s Best and Brightest Companies to

Work For” for the third year in a row!

In a press release from the Michigan Business & Professional Association on March 15, 2016 a statement was released regarding the prestigious honor of being a 101 Best Company:

“Every year companies throughout West Michigan compete to be named one of “West Michigan’s Best and Brightest Companies to Work For”. Only companies that distinguish themselves as having the most innovative and thoughtful human resources approach can be bestowed this honor.”
