published, and of which I have a copy, it looks like the producers of the documentary have done a fair job of portraying our people and their struggles to become assimilated into mainstream America with an exaggeration on the Mafia as a force in the life of the Italian American. We will have to watch the finished product to make sure the producers in their final product haven't caved in to the popular culture's enduring myths and glorification of less than one percent of Italians involved in organized crime. I hope to see you all at the meeting on January 27th. We are also hosting the District Meeting that night. There will be UNICO members from other Chapters in our District ,so our meeting will be very short. Yours in UNICO, Frank Travisano Now that we are in the new year we are also approaching the busiest time of the year for our UNICO Chapter. We are having our Corned Beef Fundraiser on Wednesday March 11. Some of you if not all of you have received your allotment of 4 tickets to sell. Please do your best to sell all of them. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. WE ALSO NEED AS MANY VOLUNTEERS AS WE CAN GET FOR THIS EVENT. There are more details on this elsewhere in the newsletter. We need everyone's cooperation to make this event a success. You also will hear more about this at our dinner meeting on January 27. Then, in quick succession are a pasta fundraiser we are having along with the Ponte Club on Sunday April 26; The Gathering in Waterbury on Saturday May 16; and our Scholarship Dinner on Tuesday May 26. Please mark your calendars and make plans to participate in as many of these events as you can. If you've never attend any of these before please do so. I guarantee you will have a good time. I also want to call to your attention that the Public Broadcasting System (CPTV locally) is having a two part showing of a newly produced documentary, The Italian Americans, of Italians in America from the start of the mass migration in the late 1800's to the present day. Right now the program is scheduled to air on 2 successive Tuesday nights, February 17 and 24 starting at 9:00pm each night. This represents one of the few times (if ever!) in history that television is telling our story to the public on a nationwide scale. Note From the President

Happy New Year to All Waterbury Chapter Members!!

Charlie Lanza Memorial Corned Beef Fundraiser The corned beef fundraiser will be held Wednesday March 11 from 5-7:30 pm.

Members are need to help in three ways: Placemat Ads, Raffle items, Selling

tickets, and Volunteering at the event. Please see the letter below from Francine

Nido, event chairperson, as well as the letter and brochure, at the end of the

newsletter, which you should have received by postal mail.

It’s Italian Corned Beef Dinner Time!!!

We are asking that each UNICAN sell at least 4 tickets. If you need additional tickets, please contact Don Mancuso immediately. It is important that you that you encourage people to purchase tickets in advance. Last year with having to guestimate the count and the rush of “walk‐ins” we ran out of food and had to turn people away. It’s always a crap‐shoot trying to figure out attendance and while we don’t want to over‐order we definitely don’t want a repeat of last year. Please get your returns to me ASAP. We would prefer all returns in PRIOR to the event so that the ticket‐line isn’t backed up. As always, any ticket you sell that you have collected money for should be marked on the back with “paid” and your last name. Send all checks [payable to Waterbury UNICO] to PO Box 933, Waterbury, CT 06721 no later than February 24th or bring them to the next meeting. If necessary, Don Mancuso can meet you or have someone pick your checks up!!!

In addition, we are looking for donations to our raffle ($25 value) and ad sponsors ($50 business card size) for our placemat. The placemat will be placed at each guest’s seat at the table and all donors will be recognized with signage displayed at the event. If you would like to place and ad or know of a business that would, please contact Diana Zappone at [email protected] or sent the ad copy along with payment to her at 131 Francis Street, Waterbury, CT 06708.

If you have any questions or need more tickets or flyers, contact Francine at 203.510.0276 or [email protected].

Thank you for your support!!!

~Francine

January 2015 Dear Friends: On Wednesday, March 11th, the Waterbury Chapter of UNICO National will hold their Annual “Charlie Lanza Memorial” Italian Corned Beef Dinner. The event will take place at LaBella Vista located at the Pontelandolfo Club in Waterbury. Tickets are $20.00 per person for a buffet meal of Corned Beef, Cabbage, Potatoes, Carrots & Pasta e Fagioli. We anticipate a crowd of at least 500 guests. Currently, ongoing fundraising provides support for Jimmy V cancer research, Cooley’s Anemia research, mental health projects, Italian Studies chairs at universities and scholarships. Proceeds from this specific event will be reinvested directly back into our local community. We are seeking your support for this event and wish that you can help by either purchasing a business card sized placemat ad for $50 or donating an item ($25 value) for the raffle. This placemat will be placed at each guest’s seat at the table and all donors will be recognized with signage displayed at the event. All checks should be made payable to “Waterbury UNICO” and payment, along with ad copy, should be sent to Diana Zappone at 131 Francis Street, Waterbury, CT 06708.
