Over a hundred years ago, thefounding fathers of the newlyincorporated City ofAmsterdam, NY had the visionof creating a water system thatwould serve its increasingresident and businesspopulation for many years intothe future. The vision todevelop a safe and reliablesource of water was ingenious.

As we well know, weather plays a big part in our daily lives. What many people donot understand is how it can affect ours. Weather extremes have been morecommon in recent years and though it may appear that our water is plentiful andpure, meteorological events such as drought and flooding can have a pronouncedimpact on treatment and making the water potable.

After being full in May, 2012 and a summer of use, Steele’s reservoir was down 13 ft. by the end of 2012.

The intake building channels water from Ireland Vly reservoir into a 24” pipe to be delivered to city. Steele’s reservoir is piped

directly from the reservoir to the intake and not influenced by stream conditions.

Chlorine Dioxide is generated and injected at

the intake

The raw water line traverses almost 15 miles of private property via a right-of-way through mostly

wooded lands.

Computer monitoring andcontinuous samplingallows for the ability ofmaking process changesat the treatment plantand remote locations. Italso provides necessaryoperational informationto operators.

Page 38: Water Treatment Plant Presentation Final

Besides continuouscomputer monitoring, over 250 physical testsare taken each day inour lab. These testsamount to over 93,000tests per year on 215contaminants.
