TODAY'S CHILDREN ARE TOMORROW'S FUTURE.

The falling standards of water quality are not only affecting the health but

may also cripple next generations. World Bank sponsored Punjab RuralWater Supply and Sanitation (PRWSS) project has arrested the declining

health of rural children by augmenting the mission of safe drinking water for

all in rural Punjab.

A healthy adult boosts economy, unhealthy may jeopardize it!

Rural economy is mostly labour intensive and adult health is a key

parameter for productivity & rural economy. One of the importantbeneficiaries of the PRWSS project would be the rural economy; as it

improves of the overall health scenario and arrest of grave diseases.

Before dawn each day rural womenfolk have to walk a distance for a

secluded place for nature's call. Its an embarrassment for every womanand shame for the society. The sanitation initiative of PRWSS aims to keep

the dignity of women intact and promote general hygiene.

Ownership is the cornerstone of a strong community.

PRWSS project manifests from the premise that villagers have a deep loyalty

to their village. In addition to their own support, PRWSS encourage villagersto collect funds, to supervise installation of the water supply system and

sustain it in years to come. This initiative showcases village unity &

determination to resolve drinking water issues.

Education is the soul of a progressive society.

Studies have shown that areas affected with water challenges have poor

school attendance on account of ill health of children and children fetchingwater during the school hours. The PRWSS project has been a boon for the

students and surveys show a remarkable increase in school attendance in

these areas.

Water ushers prosperity.

As per our sacred texts, Water is life and unavailability of safe drinking

water is the biggest bane. The falling standards of water quality due toexcessive exploitation of ground level water and usage of pesticides and

industrialisation had created a real mess. The PRWSS initiative has improved

the general health, hygiene in rural Punjab, which in turn has improved the

living standards.

Rejoice & Celebrations Together.

Celebrations are not only an escape from the daily tough life in rural India

but also reflect their undying spirit & camaraderie. The PRWSS initiative

took cue from this, and its GPWSCs (Gram Panchayat Water Supply

Committee) have been organising celebrations at village level be it on the

completion of any assignment or any rural festive occasion like Teej.

Within Woman is the power to create, nurture and transform.

The realities of rural life are difficult to comprehend. To fetch water is a

struggle and one of the daily chores for rural women. The time lost in this

errand can be very well translated into financial gains. PRWSS project has

provided an opportunity to every rural woman to supplement household

income and her pride.

Grievance delayed is solution denied.

Shikayat Nivaran Kendra (SNK) is the PRWSS initiative aimed at ensuring

regular and clean water supply in rural areas. On the SNK toll free number,

prominently displayed in all the covered villages, a villager can lodge a

complaint for a prompt redressal, and will get a feedback call on the

services within a short period. The SNK functions round-the-clock.

No Compromise on Health.

It is estimated that about 21% of communicable diseases in India is water

related. To ensure the present drinking water quality is free of microbial

contamination, PRWSS has set up both mobile labs and district level labs to

regularly monitor the quality of the water supply and also collate

qualitative data with regard to ground water.

Integrating village life with nature.

Village ponds were the main water resource consumed both for animals &

household chores. Overexploitation & ill-maintenance of this resource has

made it a source of diseases. PRWSS project has undertaken Pond Renovationas an important aspect of the project and thus involving the village

community in giving a second life to this critical & integral water resource.

Governance by the people of the people for the people.

The uniqueness of PRWSS project is that the grassroot administrative body

GPWSC is constituted by the villagers and is made of the villagers and works

for the villagers. To tackle the good governance issue, a slew of initiativeslike Transparency Wall, GPWSC Bank Account & ledger, Meeting Register

are maintained to keep all the activities of GPWSC in the public domain.
