Constant evolution. Here at the Studios we are busy working and changing the organization for the better. This evolution affects the School of Art as well. We’re pleased to offer quite a few fresh, new ways to connect with art as well as opportunities to challenge yourself creatively. New to the schedule are life drawing and beginning fiction writing workshops. We are also pleased to welcome back visiting artists Michael Chelsey Johnson and Jeannie McGuire who are back by popular demand. Their workshops are extremely popular so be sure to sign up early!

The main gallery has also seen some changes over the past year. ‘illuminate’, our first themed show drew large crowds and many favorable reviews. Opening on Friday June 1st will be ‘Indulge’, a show dedicated to taking a closer look at one of our basic needs through the eyes of contemporary (per-haps starving) artists. In conjunction with the show I have created a summer camp for ages 7-12 that parallels the vision for ‘Indulge’ show.

The Water Street Studios Community Outreach Program has fully funded scholar-ships for art classes for 25 children since the Fall of 2010. Through these scholarships, students without financial means to pay have explored welding, photography, ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media. In addition to these funded classes, Water Street Studios also offers Art Flow, our afterschool art program. Art Flow provides art activities to pre-K through 8th grade students at Batavia Apartments and reaches area high school students every Thursday afternoon at Water Street Studios. All of these programs exemplify our mission to bring art education and appreciation to all residents of the Fox Valley area. Drawing■ Anybody Can Draw the Figure (Ages 18+) The goal of this short but intense class is to provide an introduction to visual/perceptual understanding of the figure. This will be a self-guided course with optional instruction on the many uses of line, value, and, if desired, wet media. Spending time with the figure will aid artistic confidence in drawing, which encourages and enables personal creative expression. Each class is concluded with a discussion of work in relation to the visual elements. ■ Drawing with Power (Ages 15+) This is a drawing studio designed for young adults who wish to learn and develop drawing skills - basic to advanced. Instructor will help facilitate discovery and development by using still life, or other images that may be in-spiring - such as photography or drawings from favorite artists. Using traditional draw-ing mediums such as pencil, charcoal, conte or pastel, we will learn to interpret our subject into an individual expression. Basic principles of gesture capture, as well as line quality, composition, contour, and light and shadow will be explored. Jewelry■ Stamped Metal Pendant (Ages 16+)

Create a one-of-a-kind copper pendant using words of inspiration or children’s names! The sky’s the limit! We will learn how to stamp on metal then after a bit of practice you will stamp your own personalized pendant. Would make a wonderful Mother’s day gift! No previous experience necessary. ■ Intro Lampwork Glass Beadmaking (Ages 16+ teens w/parent permission)Students will learn to make glass beads in this introductory “tour” of lampwork beadmaking using the old Venetian technique of layering molten glass on a rod to form a glass bead. There will be a brief discussion on safety, tools, and technique, followed by a demonstration. Students will then have time to explore their own creativity by manipulating the glass to create one-of-a-kind handmade glass beads with the guid-ance of the instructor. Each student will be supplied with a special Nortel Minor glass working torch, safety glasses, various colors of Moretti soft Italian glass and all the tools needed. Each student should bring note-taking supplies and wear close fitting cotton clothing and closed toe shoes. ■ Metalsmithing for Jewelry Fabrication (Ages 16+) Design and create one-of-a-kind personalized jewelry. Explore jewelry fabrication using basic metalsmithing techniques. This four-week course will cover sawing, piercing, sanding, hand stamp- ing, texturing, forming, and finishing. Each week you will create at least one unique piece of copper or sterling silver jewelry. Projects may include earrings, pendants, bracelets, or rings. Color mixing and basic oil painting techniques will be covered. ■ Oil Painting Techniques For anyone who wishes to brush up on basic oil paintingtechniques, we will focus on producing “mini-works” that demonstrate different tech-niques. Variety■ Tabula Rasa: Beginning Fiction Writing (Ages 18+) Admit it! You may doodle even if you are not a painter, sing even if you can’t carry a tune, or dance even if you don’t know toe shoes from tap shoes, but you wouldn’t THINK of writing fiction because you are not a “Writer”. If the sight of an 8 ½ X 11, lined sheet of white paper with three little holes along the left-hand side has always scared you, come show it who is in charge. If, instead, that sight fills you with private little thrills, come experience new ways to enter this page, this opening. ■ Relief Printmaking (Ages 13+) Relief printing is a form of expression in which the surface of a block yields the image and the areas that do not print are cut away. It is the oldest form of printmaking and is used to communicate ideas through symbols, imagery and printed words. Ink isrolled onto the block, paper is placed upon it and pressure is applied to transfer ink from block to paper. The class will focus on wood- cut relief print techniques to create engaging imagery. Required materials: 5 piece Mikisyo Power Grip woodcarving tool set. ■ Controlling the Spark (Ages 18+) In this class you will learn the fundamental skills of sculptural metal fabrication.This can be a class for beginners who have never worked with metal, or experienced artists who want to brush up on their skills. Students will present their sculpture ideas, learn how to advance their concept into a 3-D form and complete a finished product. In this class students will learn to use the tools associat- ed with metal working such as a Mig welder, angle grinder, chop saw, and jig saw to develop their artistic design. Star Wars Themed■ Star Wars Camp: An Art Experience (Ages 6-11) A long time ago in a galaxynot that far away Star Wars came to Water Street Studios and returns once again due to popular demand. This is a fun and entertaining camp which combines art projects with games, as well as food activities. We will drink sith soda and eat clone trooper cupcakes as well as create portraits of our favorite characters and Tatooine torn paper collages. ■ Pop Art Camp (Ages 7-12) In this art camp students will explore the work of popartists Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and others. ■ Beginning Pottery On the Wheel for Small Hands (Ages 7-12) Young potters,come try your hand working with clay on an electric wheel. Instructors will assist small hands as they open a centered piece of clay on the wheel, and then guide them through

pulling the clay into a tall form. This small class will allow instructors to work closely with small hands and be available to as-sist students during this experience. If your child is curious about working on the wheel, this is the perfect class. (For curious adults, Water Street offers

■ All About Art Camp (Ages 7-12) Want to explore the world of art on your summer vacation? Swing by WSS for an all-out art attack! Lessons will be drawn from the current gallery show and students will develop art appreciation skills. Guest Artists■ Painting En Plein Air (Ages 18+) Join award-winning artist Michael Chesley Johnson for two days of painting outdoors in beautiful Batavia. Johnson will focus on fundamentals for painting outdoors - how to begin, how to proceed and how to finish. The workshop will include demonstrations in oil and pastel, plenty of time for student work, plus critiques. Johnson gives personal attention at the easel, complete with help-ful tips and suggestions. In the event of bad weather, students will paint in the studio. Michael Chesley Johnson is an oil and pas-tel painter working in the American South- west and the Canadian Maritimes. Elected a Master Pastellist by Pastel Artists Canada in 2008, he is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and a juried member of Oil Painters of America. ■ Emotion and Movement - Figurative Watercolor Workshop Jeannie McGuire developed her unique approach to the figure by exploring a freer application of paint and pushing her style to the limits of expression. Her narrative-type paintings are referenced from photos or sketches that spark her interest, followed by drawing a strong design structure which sets the stage for the painting process to develop, change and unfold into a story or persona. Workshop instruction focuses on creating paintings of people as works of art versus formal portraits and on developing back-grounds that encourage a story, feeling or purpose to emerge. Each day begins with a demo pertaining to the day’s project such as: explore eyes and faces in an unconventional way, focus on a single figure with an obscure background, and intertwine a group of people with their background elements. Artists receive plenty of personal attention and painting time. “My son Jack just had a Harry Potter themed birthday party here with 10 of his friends, mostly 8-9 in age. They made Magic Model HP characters, got to tour the entire studio, and met a couple artists - one was a welder - boys dug that one of course as they all got to try on the welding face helmet. They had a ton of fun - thank you Kari Kraus for organizing and hosting the party. The kids had a blast and I had little to do but watch and enjoy!”

“Abbey’s 11th birthday party was at WSS. She and about 10 of her friends (plus some grown-up friends and family) had a great time. The girls made paper beads, then strung beautiful bracelets. They were given a tour of the art studios where they were very excited to meet some real artists. It was cool for the guests and their parents to walk through and see the

gallery as they came for the party. It was easy working with Kari to plan the party. She was very flexible and accommodating. A great success!”

Letter from the Director of Education:

Constant evolution. Here at the Studios we are busy working and changing the organization for the better. This evolution affects the School of Art as well. We’re pleased to offer quite a few fresh, new ways to connect with art as well as opportunities to challenge yourself creatively. New to the schedule are life drawing and beginning fiction writing workshops. We are also pleased to welcome back visiting artists Michael Chelsey Johnson and Jeannie McGuire who are back by popular demand. Their workshops are extremely popular so be sure to sign up early!

The main gallery has also seen some changes over the past year. ‘illuminate’, our first themed show drew large crowds and many favorable reviews. Opening on Friday June 1st will be ‘Indulge’, a show dedicated to taking a closer look at one of our basic needs through the eyes of contemporary (per-haps starving) artists. In conjunction with the show I have created a summer camp for ages 7-12 that parallels the vision for ‘Indulge’ show.

The Water Street Studios Community Outreach Program has fully funded scholar-ships for art classes for 25 children since the Fall of 2010. Through these scholarships, students without financial means to pay have explored welding, photography, ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media. In addition to these funded classes, Water Street Studios also offers Art Flow, our afterschool art program. Art Flow provides art activities to pre-K through 8th grade students at Batavia Apartments and reaches area high school students every Thursday afternoon at Water Street Studios. All of these programs exemplify our mission to bring art education and appreciation to all residents of the Fox Valley area.
