WATER PROOFING COMPOUNDS

Page 2: Water proofing

Waterproofing is the process by which a substance is applied to a surface, be it concrete, leather , clothing or sporting goods, that renders the surface impermeable to water.

It creates a barrier that makes it impossible for water to pass through the material.

This property prevents flooding and dampness in buildings.

It helps reduce humidity inside the house and thereby protects things inside our house from damage caused due to humidity or water exposure

BUTYL Isobutylene was discovered by Michael Faraday in 1825. It was later developed into butyl rubber in 1937, by

researchers William J. Sparks and Robert M. Thomas, at Standard Oil of New Jersey's Linden, N.J., laboratory.

Today, the majority of the global supply of butyl rubber is produced by just two companies, ExxonMobil, the successor to Standard Oil, and Polymer Corporation, a Canadian federal crown corporation established in 1942 to produce artificial rubber to substitute for overseas supply cut off by World War II.

It was renamed Polysar in 1976 and the rubber component became a subsidiary, Polysar Rubber Corp.

The company was privatized in 1988 with its sale to NOVA Corp which, in turn, sold Polysar Rubber in 1990 to Bayer AG of Germany.

In 2005 Bayer AG spun off chemical divisions, including most of the Sarnia site, creating LANXESS AG, also of Germany.

PERMA WATERPROOFING BUTYL

Perma Butyl tape SF 50 is a single sided butyl rubber adhesive tape which is used for waterproofing all joints in construction industry, during construction and post construction.

Primary Uses Perma Waterproofing Butyl Tape Sf-50 Is Used For Covering All Cracks,

Construction Joints, Bends And Corner And Joints Of Non Homogeneous Materials Before Applicatioin Of Waterproofing Membranes Such As Penna Guard Or Penna Eazee Coat.

Perma waterproofing butyle tape sf-50 is used for joint sealing of the metallic and non matellic roofing such as aluminum, zinc asbestos sheeting. Penna butyl tape can be use for sealing all joints in timber framed houses.

This tape is used for covering the insulated air conditioning ducts. It is used for sealing all the comer joints and the joints between the

horizontal and vertical rcc surfaces of the sunken slabs of to nets and bathroom after water proofing. It is also used for covering of all cutouts and pipe joints in the walls.

Make sure that the surface is clean and dry .Unfold the membrane Allow membrane to relax for 30 minutes to remove wrinkles . Open bonding adhesive ( voc based , volatile organic compound or solvent based) and stir until colour is uniform .Apply adhesive to the exposed deck and to the back of the membrane .Allow adhesive to dry until it is tacky .Roll the adhesive coated membrane back onto the deck where adhesive has also been applied .Work slowly and evenly to reduce wrinkles .Use a push broom to sweep over the membrane .Repeat this procedure until all the membrane is secure .

Quick and easy to install .Extremely flexible .Excellent water resistance .Contain no dangerous substance .Superior elongation . Highly resistance to tearing and impact .Versatile , last for 40 years and more .Works at low temperature of -50◦C and maximum of 150◦C Low maintenance

ADVANTAGESE.P.D.M. comes mainly in a black

roll , which easily absorbs heat and can lead to superheating of the structure below .

It comes in light colour also , to help reflect heat in summer climate , but this adds about 30% more to the cost of the material per square foot .

If a workman wearing the wrong type of boot could tear a hole in the roof covering membrane i.e. E.P.D.M.

PVC (PolyVinyl Chloride)

• PVC waterproofing membrane is a modern roofing material, which is made of high quality flexible (plasticized) polyvinylchloride.

• Manufacturers of PVC membranes offer diverse width and length of the material.

• The width of the material ranges from 3 to 7 ft.

• The rolls can be between 60 and 75 ft in length. The thickness of the PVC membrane is 1.2 mm.

Page 19: Water proofing

Features of PVC membrane

• PVC membrane is used mainly for waterproofing of buildings and roofs.

• Since this material is quite easy to install, strong enough (is of great tensile strength), has long service life,

• Due to its structure, the PVC membrane is very strong and simultaneously flexible material which is resistant to precipitation, ultra-violet radiation, capable to withstand heavy surface and tensile loads

• PVC waterproofing membrane can serve for almost fifty years without losing its reliability and positive characteristics.

Page 20: Water proofing

Advantages of PVC• strength• elasticity and tightness• strength of the welds (at the junction of sheets)• atmosphere and chemical resistance• vapor permeability at 100% water resistance• resistance to wind loads• frost-proof• resistance to the movements of structural elements of

buildings• resistance to oxidation and UV rays• high durability• fire resistant• diversity of colors

POLYURETHANE• We use polyurethane in one form or another every

day at home in our office and cars, for sport and leisure activities and on holiday.

• Polyurethane are versatile, modern and safe.• They are used in a wide variety of applications to

create all manner of consumer and industrial products.

• Polyurethane is a plastic material.History• Otto Bayer and his coworkers at ig farben in leverkusen ,

germany, first made Polyurethane in 1937.• The new polymers had some advantages over existing plastic .• Early work focused on the production of fibers and flexible foams.• Polyisocyanates became commercially available in 1952,and

production of flexible polyurethane foam began in 1954 using toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and polyester polyols.

Page 27: Water proofing

Uses of polyurethanes• Polyurethanes are found just about everywhere in

modern life, and chair you are sitting on , the bed you sleep in, the house you live in, the car you drive – all these , plus innumerable other items you use every day probably contain polyurethanes.

• It shows how versatile they are and also how they help to protect the environment by conserving energy.

Common polyurethane applications• Building insulation• Refrigerators and freezers • Furniture and bedding • Footwear • Automotive • Coatings and adhesives • Other applications

Page 28: Water proofing

FAILURE OF WATERPROOFING

• Water proofing makes up b/w 1% and 2% of the total cost of the construction .

• But accounts for upto 80% of the complaints .• The biggest cause of waterproofing failure is

workmanship .• Poor surface preparation .• Adhesion Failure (due to moisture content) .

Page 29: Water proofing

PRECAUTIONS

• Adhesives used are highly flammable . Hence catch fire .• So , keep away from fire , sparks , source of fire .• Turn off electronic gadgets , stoves , heaters , until all

vapors dispersed . • Do not smoke .• Close container after use . • Keep away from eyes and use chemical resistant gloves

and glasses . • Read safety instructions on the product .
