Monitoring

Two-thirds of our planet is covered by water, but only one percent of all water resources are enclosed in the fresh water loop of rain, ground- and surface-water. The distribution of fresh water throughout the world is unbalanced – in some countries people have a lot, in others, virtually nothing.

Water is used, but also polluted. The sources of this are the people themselves, just by producing waste and wastewater, but also through agricultural and industrial activities. Regarding agriculture, we increasingly face the issue of nutrients being discharged into water bodies (creating algae growing during the summer time), but in respect of industrial discharge, we are faced with the diversity of production processes.

What are the consequences? On one hand, people need to know about the raw water quality in order to take the right decision on how to prepare this for human

use. On the other hand, there are serious risks to our environment, if our water bodies are to be loaded with a rate of disposals which cannot be covered by the natural cleaning capabilities.

How can we rectify this situation? Firstly, by creating a register of water body qualities showing the situation as it is. Secondly, by transforming the water bodies to a quality which is sustainable for the future.

The way is paved by a lot of regional laws and rules. For example, the US Clean Water Act and the EU Water Framework Directive should be mentioned here. Their aim is the sustainable management of fresh water reservoirs.

But what is behind water monitoring? The answer lies with the issue of a water body’s quality and suitability for human consumption and usage, outlined within

physical and chemical parameters.

How does it work? At a representative point to trace the water quality, a continous water sample is taken and analyzed by use of Liquiline-based instrumentation: information about pH, conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen is gathered in this way. Flow is calculated by measuring the water level (open channel), using the well-known ultrasonic level devices Prosonic.

Most of the measurement lines are mounted in one compartment collecting all the data, ensuring the maximum availability of the necessary information through wireless data communication. Automatic cleaning of the sensors keeps the maintenance low.

And last but not least – the whole system issues an alert when identifying measurement values which fall outside the recognized limits. All to control the sustainable use of our water!

water meets a quality required for the desired purpose. The definition of what is required is dependent on the quality of raw water - in terms of taste, odour and micobiological, mineralic and chemical contaminants.

A standard treatment starts with disinfection to get all microbiological activity out of the water. Therefore, different processes can be used: ozonisation, ultra violet light (UV) or even a chemical disinfection like chlorination. In this case, free chlorine is injected into the water. The concentration of free chlorine at the water plant outlet needs to be constant – this is measured by free-chlorine sensors and controlled by Liquisys – the disinfection solution of Endress+Hauser.

The next step is known as “coagulation” – which addresses the issue of how to agglomerate small, levitating particles into larger ones which could be filtered far more easily. Coagulation could be done achieved by injecting reagents like polymers into the water, thus driving the agglomeration to larger particles. This process is measured and controlled by Turbimax, the Endress+Hauser turbidity-meter.

In general, water production consists of two steps: abstraction (taking the raw water from a source) and treatment (making the water acceptable for a specific defined purpose).

Basic rules about water quality for human use are detailed in the WHO guidelines, regarding both the water itself, and the treatment processes. These guidelines cover parameters describing water quality, and also the water safety during production and distribution.

What is “abstraction”? This is the extraction of the raw water from a source. This could be surface water, like a river or a lake, or even a ground water aquifier – depending on the local water resources. The amount of water taken from the source needs to be controlled – the river must not fall dry, the aquifier must not be overloaded by sucking more water out than is charged back and the well´s pressure must not drop below a certain point. So the level, flow and pressure instrumentation from Endress+Hauser delivers the vital information about this process – the “Waterpilot” does this work even in deep wells.

What is meant by “treatment”? Here we have the step of purification until the

What follows now? The removal of iron and manganese which is in soluble form in the water. Injecting air or even pure oxygen into the water leads to oxidation of iron and manganese, which is now a particle and can be filtered out. Filtering is provided by any kind of sand – or gravelfilters or even bank filtration in the ground requiring less back-flushing over time. How much oxygen needs to be injected? This energy-consuming process is controlled by Endress+Hauser instrumentation using an oxygen measurement in the outlet as the input.

The final step is to feed the treated water into the distribution network. Pressure transducers Cerabar are used to keep line pressure constant, flow transducers Promag measure the amount of water delivered into the network. A final chlorination based on Liquisys or Liquiline is added to ensure a sufficient disinfection capability over the whole network to keep it safe.

Desalination is a process which removes minerals from seawater, in order to obtain water, suitable for any kind of human use. It is a technical solution to gain fresh water where the demand is exceeding the capacity of natural sources.

Desalination uses large amounts of energy as well as an expensive infrastructure. There are two different methods in use. The most common one is Multi-stage flash distillation (MSF).

Sea water is heated by steam. The heated sea water is passed to a stage, where the surrounding pressure is lower than atmospheric pressure. It is this sudden introduction into a lower pressure stage that causes it to evaporate. To increase the yield, water is sent through a series of stages, each at a lower pressure than the previous one. The resulting distillate (pure water at lowest conductivity and almost ion free) needs to be conditioned for transport and consumption. This is achived by using calcium for hardening and bicarbonate for alkalinity. MSF plants are typically paired with power plants or similar industrial plants, producing waste heat.

From an instrumentation point of view, pressure and temperature control in the individual stages are of key importance. Endress+Hauser has the perfect instruments in its product portfolio: Deltabar M and TR 1x. With Prosonic Flow inline or clamp-on ultrasonic flow measurement, Endress+Hauser has the best available technology, with the capacity to measure lowest conductive water, even in a large turn

down range.

For conditioning purposes, Liquiline (to measure pH and conductivity), is the most reliable solution to minimize maintenance and recalibration requirements. To measure turbidity, the optical Turbimax system offers an easy solution for installation and operation. At the conditioning stage, (dosing additives), the Promag H Flowmeter with its resistant PFA liner and a wide selection of electrode materials, offers a corrosion resistant solution.

Newest desalination plants are based on reverse osmosis technology. The advantage of this technology is the significant lower energy consumption per produced unit of water. By using a semi-permeable membrane, salt is separated from water on a molecular level.

Membranes are sensitive with regards to exposure to solid contents. Therefore enhanced pre-treatment is required. Sea water is passed through a micro filtration system that removes tiny particles and microbial materials.

In the next step, the reverse osmosis is processed. Water is pushed in the RO membrane at 40 to 70 bar pressure to exceed the osmotic pressure of sea water. To enhance the overall yield, there are several RO units installed in a cascade. It results in a clean water stream and a brine stream.

As in MSF plants, conditioning is required. Also chlorine may be used for disinfection purposes, to avoid biological growth in the transport line.

The effectiveness of the salt removal process. Key indicators for this are flow, dP, conductivity and turbidity. For all parameters, Endress+Hauser offers reliable and tailored solutions. By manufacturing standardized panels/racks, containing all the analyzers, Endress+Hauser can add even more value in monitoring the water quality.

The membranes need to be protected from mechanical blockage and bio fowling. This is of paramount importance to maintain a constant flux through the membranes. This is linked to the overall availability and quantitative performance of the plant. Therefore, the flux controls through the filtration processes need to be monitored. By using Promag Flowmeter and Cerabar Pressure transmitters, Endress+Hauser has tried and tested instruments to help customers to guarantee the reliable operation of the filtration systems day by day.

The high pressure on the feed side requires adapted flow solutions. The Endress+Hauser Flow portfolio contains electromagnetic flow meter, clamp on ultra sonic flow meter and dP flow solutions. Together with the customer, Endress+Hauser is able to select the best possible solution for the application at maximum measuring performance.

Liquiline CM442 Liquiline CM442 is the new control unit for all sensors with Memosens multiparametric technology: pH, Redox, Conductivity, Turbidity/SS, free chlorine and nitrates. Because of the simplicity in programming thanks to the “navigator”, the use of interchangeable modules for different communication protocols and digital automatic recognition “plug and play” any sensor measurement, the controller Liquiline CM442 provides maximum versatility. The interface Liquiline CM442/Memosens is able to track all status information of the sensor to a predictive maintenance program, reducing maintenance costs.

Water distribution systems must deliver water in the required quantities for all sorts of consumers. A water supply system is separated in bulk water supply from the treatment plant to a storage facility and a distribution system from storage to the tap. Bulk water systems are designed to transport large quantities of water and have a large pipe sizes. The function of a water distribution system is to deliver water to all customers of the system in sufficient quantity for drinking and fire fighting purposes. This system must meet hydraulic integrity to maintain the requisite water flow, water pressure and water age as well as ‘Water Quality Integrity’: the maintenance of water quality by preventing contamination from the environment.

A major aim is to sustain a sufficient pressure in the distribution network. This is the precondition to guarantee that water may reach the upper floors of a building, is spraying from a tap with sufficient flow (even at the most remote point in the area) and to avoid negative pressure in the network. If negative pressure were to occur, it could cause groundwater to be sucked into the system, polluting it with micro-organisms and any other toxic contaminants.

From an instrumentation point, the focus is on pressure measurement and on flow metering. Monitoring the water quality online is not so commonplace after entering the distribution system.

Pressure is monitored at the outlet of the treatment plant and at several points in the network such as pump stations, water towers and main branches. By using Cerabar M, Endress+Hauser offers a designed for purpose, rugged pressure transmitter to fulfil this vital measuring task.

Flow measurement is used to effectively manage and understand the consumption patterns, planning for future needs and limiting water losses. Another specific task is to detect ‘non revenue’ water. This is water that has been produced and lost before it reaches the customer. Losses can be actual losses caused by leaks, or apparent losses due to theft.

Promag W has been developed with all these applications in mind. It is the most successful electro magnetic flow meter in the world, with an installed base of more than a million units. Furthermore Promag flowmeters are always calibrated on a rig, accredited in accordance to ISO17052. This guarantees a traceability of the calibration to the national standard of the metrology body. For Endress+Hauser customers, this means, they are obtaining a transparent, traceable and reliable accuracy performance of the flowmeter.

Some of the existing distribution systems can be very old, whilst many of today’s water distribution systems have been constructed with little or no metering. However, a system operator likes to have additional information about distribution flows throughout the system for a better understanding of the consumption pattern. He requires additional measuring points in an existing system. With Prosonic Flow insertion or clamp on flowmeters, Endress+Hauser offers a non-invasive flow metering solution, to retrofit measuring points in existing networks. A non invasive system offers the advantage of an easy commissioning and uninterrupted water supply while installing the device. This solution guarantees an excellent cost to performance ratio.

Distribution is happening over widespread areas, subsequently the measurement of pressure and flow is happening remote from the control room of the network. This leads to additional demands for data transmission from the measuring points to the control system. With the Fieldgate product line, Endress+Hauser is offering a smart solution for long range data transmission.

Collection

From channel operation to integrated operationAccording to the type of sewage network (combined or separated), wastewater and rainwater are collected to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Over the years, a trend towards the integration of the sewerage systems into the management of wastewater treatment plants has been seen worldwide. The reason for this is to store wastewater temporarily during flow peak periods, increasing the wastewater process stability by monitoring flows and levels in the network to harmonize the inlet flow.

From the regulatory point of view, a big part of the municipal load in water bodies comes from the so-called temporary outlets such as storm water basins and channel systems. More and more the legislation aims to limit the temporary flow emissions defining specific monitoring programs. This can be achieved through e careful monitoring program, based on flow and load determination into the sewer system at the WWTP inlet.

Transparency will be the key! Control and optimization require information: level, flow and data acquisition are the basics; load measurements on marginal measuring points are the way forward in managing the process.

The safety approach As a global supplier, Endress+Hauser takes a pro-active approach to safety issues. Requirements and legislation in one part of the world may ultimately affect other areas.

The implementation of recent ATEX directives concerning explosion protection has influenced equipment design, instruments and the plants themselves. Throughout Europe, parts of the plants need to be classified according to a risk assessment procedure that defines the classification of a hazardous area. Endress+Hauser’s task is to provide customers with fully compliant instrumentation.

Municipal wastewater

Master the growing complexityIncreasing industrialization and population growth has caused tremendous contamination of surface waters during the last decades. As a consequence, the laws regarding environmental protection have been tightened in many countries. Also, other external factors are driving the wastewater industry: energy crisis, climate change, demographic developments, structural changes… All these factors are responsible for an increasing complexity of the wastewater treatments and handling by limited financial and human resources.

Independent of this, all activities have to follow first the main target of each WWTP: the guarantee of the outlet limits. The optimization potential refers to the goal to reach this with minimized operational costs.

“When the fieldbus control architecture was presented to me, I recognized the advantages and immediately I wanted

it implemented in our plant which was currently under refurbishment,

to maximize the advantages achieved through digital communication and

online diagnostic/configuration. In our plant today, there are around 200 devices (instruments, valves, engines) connected

Nutrient removal In modern WWTP with the so-called third purification step (which involves nutrient removal), the aeration step is the key process. Here the resulting outlet limits for COD and Nitrogen are made and the energy efficiency of the plant depends on the operation quality too. Apart from temperature and pH value, the sludge age and concentration of degradable organic components is of importance. In order to use the full denitrification capacity of the treatment plant, a continuous measurement of the nitrate concentration at the outlet of the pre-located denitrification step is useful. The recirculation of the wastewater into the denitrification tank is controlled with this measurement very efficiently. A low nitrate value, measured at that location, means a most efficient degree of recirculation. This means cost savings. Modern ion-selective sensors allow the reliable on-line measurement of Nitrate and Ammonia. The optical oxygen measurement allows a controlled air input into the basins.

The elimination of phosphate is a mix of biological degradation and chemical precipitation. The last affects operational costs because of usage of flocculants and additional sludge, which has to be disposed of. Especially in the case of various Phosphor concentration in the inlet, a dosage of flocculants depending on the P-load is useful. The aim of this control strategy is to reach lower and constant outlet concentration, lower flocculant usage and less sludge production. This is done by flow and PO4-on-line measurement in order to control the chemical dosing process.

Sludge managementThe sludge treatment in general is the field where the operators and engineers discovered further optimization potential, since digested sludge contains about 95% water. Before the sludge can be deposited in a landfill or burned, it should be de-watered. All thickening processes usually require flocculation agent dosage, which is controlled by a volumetric flow measurement, and a sludge concentration measurement. Exact dosing of polymers is important because a dosage that is too high increases costs for the chemical agent and decreases the efficiency of the de-watering process. An accurate control of the dewatering process with flow and concentration measurements supports optimal polymer consumption, better filter running life and, last but not least, better de.watering results. This all results in lower disposal costs.

Municipal wastewater

Energy efficiency of a wastewater treatment plantBesides the aeration, the biogas production and consumption to power influences the energy efficiency of a wastewater treatment plant. Together with the political activities regarding renewable energies the co-fermentation of external organic matter in the digesters is an interesting possibility to increase biogas production on WWTP and to influence the energy balance positively.

An individual position evaluation needs benchmark numbers. That benchmark needs reliable and good parameters. Therefore the flow metering of biogas is becoming more and more important.

Endress+Hauser takes up this challenge and offers several measuring technologies for biogas flow measurement like thermal and differential pressure (dP) technologies. This allows us to consult our customers seriously with regard to the individual application. The result is an optimized engineered biogas flow meter system.

“Optimization” means better use of process information! This is the main strength of digital communication technologies in comparison with traditional analogue signals. Regarding the need for investment safety Endress+Hauser admits clearly to open standards like Profibus®. In the meantime our expertise is extensive enough that we also are able to offer the engineering of automation concepts for whole wastewater treatment plant. 1

Driven by legislation, also all industry productions have to look to their water management. The hot topics is recycling of process water to decrease the specific water consumption per production unit. Furthermore this affects a reduction of wastewater production. But regardless of the amount, wastewater has to be treated.

Industrial wastewater treatment has to adapt itself to the great diversity of industrial requirements. The different types of contamination of wastewater require a variety of strategies to remove the pollutants. Modern legislation relates to this and has defined industry related parameters and limits.

Membrane Filtration Especially in the case of industrial wastewater and process water treatment, the membrane filtration has developed into a key technology. Very compact and reliable in terms of the purification effect, this technology is suitable for a huge number of different applications. This applies also to decentralized solutions, for instance small wastewater treatment plants > 50 PE or plants on ships, where the limited space necessitates compact solutions.

Industrial wastewater

“As an international plant constructor for industrial wastewater we have used Endress+Hauser instruments for several years. One reason for this is the total satisfaction of our customers with Endress+Hauser instruments. But we also value, trust and rely on the high quality of the instruments and the excellent support from the Endress+Hauser people during our projects.”

It is not only the wastewater we collect groundside which has to be treated. Wastewater on ships also has to be handled before being discharged into the sea - particularly on cruise liners where several hundred or perhaps thousands of

people stay for weeks on end, modern and high-performance WWTPs are a must. To conform to the stringent IMO regulations, a separated collection of “grey” and “black” wastewater in combination with modern bio reactors with membrane technologies are state-of-the-art. For example the “Celebrity Solstice”, the biggest cruiser built in Germany, has such a modern WWTP under her deck. In the meantime, the industrial standards of those decentralized WWTP´s is equal to the “normal” WWTP driven by the strong limits. Because of the limited space on a ship, membrane technology is very advantageous, but needs highly reliable automation and instrumentation concepts. An ideal environment for Endress+Hauser instrumentation!

TOC, the solution for industrial wastewater application Many environmental legislation involve an obligation to continuously monitor effluent parameters such as metal, nutrient and carbon content. For such applications there is a family of on-line analyzer available to fit this purpose. This requires the most relevant industrial installation to apply for an integrated permit to operate, taking into consideration emissions to air, water and land through the implementation of a monitoring system for compliance assessment and for industrial emissions reporting. The parameters to be monitored depend on the production processes, raw materials and chemicals used in the installation, most common in water are hydrocarbons, metal and their compounds, material in suspension, nutrients (N,P) and negative influence oxygen balance compounds such as TOC.

Water recycling is the method used to close the circle of human water usage, by treating effluent or storm water in such a way that it will achieve drinking water quality.

Less than 1% of the world’s water is available or suitable for human use. In times of constant change in the annual rain pattern, and ongoing urbanisation and increase in population, water supply bodies are looking for alternative sources for irrigation and cooling water, to minimize the usage of fresh water for such purposes.

Cleaning effluent for re-use is an effective way to achieve the sustainability of the fresh water cycle, especially in areas where the natural supply is not plentifull.

This method of gaining water for human use is called advanced water treatment, because it adds an advanced treatment step to the cleaning procedure, instead of discharging water into a river body or similar. The aim of this treatment step is the entire removal of nutrients, germs and bacteria from the effluent. There are several methods of water recycling in practical use, delivering different grades of recycled water. The most advanced, which is used specifically, if the aim is feeding reservoir systems, is similar to one of the common desalination processes, based on the reverse osmosis technology. In addition to a desalination process, advanced measures for disinfection are in use. The clean water is treated by a process called advanced oxidation. The aim is, to destroy any remaining traces of organic or microbiological compounds by using the strongest oxidants and ultra violet light.

“Jose Pastor, Project Engineer at Endress+Hauser was sitting in our office during the design office process of the Western Corridor – Gibbson Island AWTP (Advanced Water Treatment Plant). He immediately became a part of our alliance team. Having an engineer from the main instrument vendor in the design team is of big benefit, because he could free up the design engineers from all instrument related tasks. This adds a lot of flexibility to the team, especially in such a fast track project, where design and construction are happening partly in parallel. Jose could handle all design changes first hand and helped to keep the momentum in the project alive”

The brine stream (concentrate) needs further treatment like precipitation to remove phosphorous, and biological denitrification to remove nitrogen which is present as nitrate.

Two main parameters need to be controlled in such a process:

The effectiveness of the nutrient removal process. Key parameters for this are turbidity, total phosphorous and nitrate content in the clean water stream through the several treatment steps. For

all these parameters, Endress+Hauser can offer reliable and tailored solutions. By manufacturing standardized panel mounted wet rack solutions, containing all the analyzers, Endress+Hauser can add even more value in monitoring the key parameters for the water quality. The membranes need to be protected from mechanical blockage and Bio fouling. This is of paramount importance to maintain a constant flux through the membranes, which is linked to overall availability and quantitative performance of the plant. Therefore the flux control through the filtration processes need to be carefully monitored. By using Promag flowmeter and Cerabar pressure transmitters, Endress+Hauser has tried and tested instruments to help customers to guarantee the reliable service of the filtration systems day by day, week by week.
