What is Horizon 2020? (1)

• €70.2 billion research and innovation funding programme (2014-2020)• A core part of Europe 2020, the Innovation Union & the European Research

Area:• Responding to the economic crisis to invest in future jobs and growth• Addressing people’s concerns about their livelihoods, safety and environment• Strengthening the EU’s global position in research, innovation and technology

• First started as Framework Programme 1 focusing on research in 1984• Linking research to innovation – "from research to retail", funding all forms

of innovation• Focus on societal challenges facing EU society, e.g. health, agriculture,

climate change, energy, security and transport• Simplified access, for all companies, universities, institutes in all EU countries

and beyond

What is Horizon 2020? (2)

Market exploitation - industry participation and market impact very important

Strong emphasis on expected impact

Importance of user engagement

Support to and involvement of industry, in particular high potential SMEs

Innovative, integrated and multidisciplinary solutions (e.g. technological, economic, social, health, behavioural and environmental)

Involvement of a range of organisations (industry, academic, public, end users)

International cooperation

Opportunity to pilot and demonstrate solutions in a ‘safe’ environment

• Associated countries participate in Horizon 2020 under thesame conditions as EU Member States.

• 13 states, as of August 2015:– Iceland– Norway– Albania– Bosnia and Herzegovina– the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia– Montenegro– Serbia– Turkey– Israel– Moldova– Switzerland (partial association)– Faroe Islands– Ukraine

Associated countries

ELIGIBILITY:RIA/IA:at least 3 partners from 3diff. MS/AS

CSA:At least one legal entity

Collaboration• Becoming involved 'for the money' is generally a bad place to start, ending in

disappointment or worse…the principal opportunity revolves around the collaboration

• The vast majority of funded projects will involve at least three independent partners fromdifferent member states or associated countries

• Projects should involve industry/business partners, also from the same country (UKacademia and UK business)

• In collaborating participants may benefit in a number of ways– Sharing Intellectual property with others to achieve new things– Growth of understanding of technology– Growth of wider international networks– Understanding of wider markets / exploitation opportunities– Participation in standards setting / market making

• new knowledge and/or exploring the feasibility of a new or improved technology, service or solution:basic and applied research, technology development and integration, testing and validation on a small-scale prototype in a laboratory or simulated environment (100% direct + 25% indirect) x 100%

Innovation Actions (IA) – two stage submission

• producing plans and arrangements or designs for new, altered or improved products, processes orservices prototyping, testing, demonstrating, piloting, large-scale product validation and marketreplication (100% direct + 25% indirect) x 70% (87.5%)

Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) – single stage submission

• standardisation, dissemination, awareness-raising and communication, networking, coordination orsupport services, policy dialogues and mutual learning exercises and studies (100% direct + 25%indirect) x 100%

SME Instrument:

• Three phases (feasibility, demonstration/market, commercialisation) – general topic in respective WPs

Fast Track to Innovation

• funding for industry-led close to market projects, bottom up9

The focus on water

12

Thematic priorities:water reuse and recycling, water and waste water treatment (incl. recovery of resources),water and energy integration, flood and drought risk management, andthe role of ecosystem services in the provision of water-relatedservices.

Horizontal priorities:water governance, decision support system and monitoring, andfinancing for innovation.

Specific Challenge:

CIRC-2-2016

• Increasing global demand for food/feed/fibre leading to growing demand for nutrients• Water treatment has the potential for nutrient recovery and contribution to circular

economy• Extensive implementation of nutrient recovery and the use of recovered nutrients is

lacking in Europe

Large scale demonstration projects covering the whole value chain fromrecovery of nutrients to their recycling

May involve recovery technologies implemented in any water sector (industrial, agriculture or municipal)

An LCA approach should be used together with environmental and health riskassessment methodologies

Involvement of social sciences and humanities to address issues such asattitudes to/acceptance of recycled products

Prospective end-users need to be involved in the projects to inform themabout the quality and safety requirements to be met by the products

Demonstrating the potential of efficient nutrientrecovery from water, IA, €6-8m/project, 3 projectsDeadline 8th March 2016 for stage 1
