What is Water Conservation?
- Is the planned and deliberate actions taken voluntarily to bring efficiency to both the supply of, and the demand upon the water resources of a region.
Who’s involved ?
- EVERYONE!
- Water Suppliers, Water Users, Governments, Industry and Commerce, Schools and Churches
Ten Key Steps to Planning a Successful Water Conservation
Program*
- Identify conservation goals- Develop a water-use profile and forecast- Evaluate planned facilities- Identify and evaluate conservation measures- Identify and assess conservation incentives
*From EPA Water Conservation Guidelines
Ten Key Steps continued…
- Analyze benefits and costs- Select conservation measures and incentives- Prepare and implement the conservation plan- Integrate conservation and supply plans, modify forecasts- Monitor, evaluate and revise program as needed
*From EPA Water Conservation Guidelines
Ways to Conserve
• Equipment modificationso Leak repair, Low-flow plumbing fixtures, drip
irrigation, water reuse system, etc.• Behavioral modifications
o Reduce frequency of irrigation, turn the water off when you are not using it
Ways to Conserve continued…
Water your lawn only once a week. Use a broom or a blower to remove dirt and debrisfrom patios. Use a shut-off nozzle on your hose. Plant drought tolerant grasses, ground covers, shrubs and trees.
Where do we start?
- Start in “Your own back yard.”
- Involve the entire community
- Analyze, Plan, Demonstrate, Inform, Involve, Communicate, Implement, Evaluate
Education
How can we teach people
• we need to teach people little things they can do at home to help conserve
• we also should give them the "bigger picture" of this situation like huge things we could do to help
• another thing we should mention is what would happen in the future if not solved
Some Interesting Facts
• if everyone in the US flushed once less time a day, there would be enough water to make a lake that is four feet deep and a square mile long
Facts Continued
• one per a second from your faucet could waste 2700 gallons of water per a year (that's a lot!)
