A large amount of wastewater is generated as a result of population growth, cities expansions and industrial development. Treatment of wastewater is often practiced to remove organic matter and nutrients from wastewater using biological treatment systems, typically activated sludge systems. This course will equip the participants with the ability to familiarize with the basic wastewater parameters. It will also cover the operation and maintenance as well as trouble shooting of activated sludge treatment systems. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Explain the basic parameters in biological wastewater treatment process. Explain the working mechanism of various activated sludge treatment systems. Understand the operation and maintenance of activated sludge treatment systems. Troubleshoot activated sludge treatment problems. Prof. Dr. Shamsul Rahman Mohamed Kutty, presently a lecturer in Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, received his PhD degree from the University of Memphis, TN, USA. He has worked with the university for more than 14 years. He is popularly known as Dr. Shark due to his various involvement in theatre. Nevertheless, throughout the years, he has been involved in research and consultancies related to wastewater treatment, biological as well as physical chemical. Over the years, he has also been invited to give talks locally and overseas on wastewater

treatment. He has obtained several research grants from MOE under ERGS, FRGS and PRGS.

Dr. Lavania Baloo, is a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). She obtained her B.Sc. (Industrial Biology) and M. Eng (Environmental Management) degrees from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and her PhD specialization is in Environmental Engineering. Dr Lavania’s research has primary focused on microbiology in environmental engineering and in water purification. She has done several studies involving biological

wastewater treatment and develop agricultural waste based activated carbon using empty fruit bunch and seaweed biomass for wastewater treatment. She has in-depth skills in water quality analysis, such as the water quality index and marine water quality standard parameters that involved. She is also a member of Malaysian Water Association (MWA) professional body and has published several scientific papers in international journals.

Mr. Samsul Ariffin, is a General Manager (Technical Support & Training Division) at Arachem Sdn. Bhd. He obtained his B.Sc. (Hons) Chemistry from University of Malaya. He has more than 20 years of working experience in water and wastewater monitoring system and equipment. In addition, he has attended various professional courses such as that organized by the HACH company and on technical trainings on water quality monitoring system. Mr

Samsul is also a trainer for Water Treatment Process Competency Course (WTPCC) under Malaysian Water Academy-MyWA, and is a Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment System-Biological Processes (CePIETSO-BP/00055). He is also a Certified Vocational Training Officer - VTO and possess Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia -SKM Level 3 for Water Treatment Operation Supervision and Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia -SKM Level 3 for Industrial Effluent Treatment System -IETS.
