    WASTE MANAGEMENT

    PURPOSE OF POLICY

    INTRODUCTION

    KEY PRINCIPALS

This policy sets out the nursery's duty of care in waste management. It sets out procedures and best practice within the Nursery, to ensure that staff can demonstrate they have an understanding of current waste management arrangements to dispose of soiled waste and to minimise and save energy. Our policy applies to all staff, students and volunteers working in the nursery.

At Tiny Tots Nursery we value our environment and in order to keep our earth safe and healthy for our children we closely monitor the management of our waste and its disposal in accordance with local authority requirements. Soiled waste such as nappies, sanitary products and plasters are considered to be non-infectious.

A disposal service provider will be contracted and an audit carried out to identify our needs:

Nappy Disposal Service - yellow wheelie bin, yellow bags and waste transfer documentation.

    Sanitary Hygiene Service.

Through induction and training staff are made aware of the need to minimise energy waste and the nursery uses appropriate measures to save energy, including:

    Energy saving light bulbs.

Turning off lights when not in use.

Not leaving any equipment on standby.

Unplugging all equipment at the end of its use/the day.

Staff must ensure waste materials and rubbish are not allowed to build up inside the premises. All rubbish, soiled nappies and other waste should be cleared at the end of each day.

The nursery recycles paper waste at paper banks and ensures that where possible other sources of waste are recycled to reduce the effect on the environment. Where materials are combustible they must not be allowed to build up as this is a fire hazard.

We assess our nursery's impact on the environment on a regular basis and place procedures in place to counteract this impact.

Energy saving wash cycles on the washing machine.
