Waste Collection CentreMost of the waste can be placed in waste containers (of the underground or above-ground type) close to your home or be disposed of at bulky-waste disposal sites. Of course, you can also take it to one of the citys six Waste Collection Centers (Afvalpunten). This waste can be disposed of separately, as: construction waste, demolition waste, household hazardous waste, electrical appliances, glass, wood, iron, recyclable items, plastics, mattresses, furniture, non-ferrous metals, paper and cardboard, polystyrene, rubber, textiles, garden waste.
There are six Waste Collection Centres in Amsterdam:

• Seineweg 1 (Nieuw West district)• Henk Sneevlietweg 22 (Nieuw West district) • Meerkerkdreef 31 (Zuidoost district)
We are open from Mondays to Saturdays, from 08:00 to 17:00. Amsterdam residents can dispose of their waste here, free of charge. Take a valid ID or proof of your home address.

Overamstel: by appointment
Disposing of bulky wasteBe sure to dispose of your bulky waste before 07:00 on the bulky waste collection day. You can put it out the evening before, but no earlier than 21:00. Please put it where the bulky-waste collection vehicle can reach it easily. Dont put it on the waste containers plate, as that will mean it cannot be emptied. Wherever possible, try to tie individual items such as shelving into bundles.
From spring 2018 onwards bulky waste in Watergraafsmeer will only be collected by appointment. Residents will be informed
6 7
Remaining wasteIt is important to us that you sort this waste. This is because we can reuse some raw materials, or extract valuable materials from them. Asbestos can cause cancer, so it must always be well packaged and disposed of separately.
Asbestos
Asbestos is hazardous. You are not allowed to just leave it in the street. You have to take it to a Waste Collection Centre. If you want to dispose of asbestos, it must be double-packed. This
released into the air when the waste is dropped into a container. You can get packaging material for asbestos from the Waste Collection Centre, free of charge. Different rules apply for companies that need to dispose of asbestos.
Tip: you can also have this waste collected
by a specialized company. They will charge
approved companies at www.ascert.nl.
Construction waste and demolition waste
Construction waste and demolition waste are not usually collected in Amsterdam. You have to take it to one of the Citys six Waste Collection Centres yourself. For further information please see amsterdam.nl/afval.
Fruit and vegetable waste
In some neighbourhoods, fruit and vegetable waste is collected separately. Otherwise it must be disposed of as non-recyclable waste.
Tip: what can you do if fruit and
vegetable waste is not collected in your
neighbourhood and you want to dispose
of it sustainably? There are various ways
of turning fruit and vegetable waste into
compost at home. Google composting at
home and read about the options.
Frying fat
Used frying fat and cooking oil can make great biofuel. So dispose of it separately. You can do so at the Waste Collection Centre.
Industrial waste
Different rules apply to the disposal of industrial waste. Go to www.amsterdam.nl/afval.
White goods and brown goods
When you buy a new washing machine, oven or refrigerator, the shop you buy it from will usually dispose of the old one for you. Otherwise, it must be treated as bulky waste. Other electrical appliances, such as radios, televisions and computers, can also be disposed of as bulky waste.
Wood and pruning waste
Wood waste such as boards and wooden furniture is bulky waste. Tie individual shelves together. Make sure there are no protruding nails or sharp edges. At the Waste Collection Centres, wood is separated from the rest of the waste and reused. You are allowed to dispose of small amounts of pruning waste in the non-recyclable waste container.
Are you like I am prepared to make an
effort to keep the street clean? Then adopt
a waste container in your neighbourhood.
Together with your city district, you can
contribute to a clean area around the
waste container. Further information:
www.amsterdam.nl/afval.
Holidays
Bulky waste will not be collected on holidays. Instead, you can dispose of your bulky waste on the next collection day. Or you can take it to one of the citys Waste Collection Centres (see page 8).
