BURKE GoingMany I I RunnersNo I I I went over the intercity course from Washington to Laurel yesterday after- noon and returned over the same route Its a stiff course and there are some hills that will cause bother to those who are not in condition The last half of the course is what might be termed excellent going when 13le Mara- thon courses in general are taken into consideration Just after leaving Laurel the roads are all that could be desired for a few miles and whit bad spots will be en countered between Laurel and a foot path on the side of the road will give the runners some advantage Although the first part of the journey may seem tough keep the fact in mind that the last ten miles are almost per- fect for Toad work The course is somewhat hilly but the up grades do not occur too frequently when the distance twenty miles is taken into consideration The Boston course has often been described as the bilMard table course Thjs is true In a way but the last six miles of that course is Indented with hills while the runners in the TimesNews race June 12 will find the hardest part of their work in the first half ofthe distance Bo prepared for hill work The up- grade is a little harder than I antici- pated Tom Longboat and Carrey of Canada have been the only men who ran the entire distance over the Boston course which Longboat holds the record but it is doubtful if Caftrey would have run twentyfive over such roads ae lay between Laurel and Bentsville 1 cautioned you to beware of stonea on the road in your training strftr and after covering the course yoflVivy BURKE GIVES POINTERS-ON MARATHON COURSE

Expert Shows That There Will Be Plenty of Hill Workand That the Last Ten Miles of the Road Will

Be the Best Sandy Places

Letters to Marathon 6

By THOMAS E BURKE

GoingMany

I RunnersNo I

I

I went over the intercity course fromWashington to Laurel yesterday after-noon and returned over the same route

Its a stiff course and there are somehills that will cause bother to thosewho are not in condition The lasthalf of the course is what might betermed excellent going when 13le Mara-thon courses in general are taken intoconsideration

Just after leaving Laurel the roadsare all that could be desired for a fewmiles and whit bad spots will be encountered between Laurel anda foot path on the side of the roadwill give the runners some advantage

Although the first part of the journeymay seem tough keep the fact in mindthat the last ten miles are almost per-fect for Toad work

The course is somewhat hilly but theup grades do not occur too frequentlywhen the distance twenty miles istaken into consideration The Bostoncourse has often been described as the

bilMard table course Thjs is true Ina way but the last six miles of thatcourse is Indented with hills while therunners in the TimesNews race June12 will find the hardest part of theirwork in the first half ofthe distance

Bo prepared for hill work The up-grade is a little harder than I antici-pated Tom Longboat and Carrey ofCanada have been the only men whoran the entire distance over the Bostoncourse which Longboat holds therecord but it is doubtful if Caftreywould have run twentyfive oversuch roads ae lay between Laurel andBentsville

1 cautioned you to beware of stonea onthe road in your training strftr andafter covering the course yoflVivydoubly caution you

road to confute the contestants andat the mistakes mightoccur there will be checkers and offi-cials to warn the competitors and putthem on the right truck

The last ten miles are on a practicallylevel road with little or no dust 10bother the runners and it would bewell for all those In the Intercity raceto remember that they will find theirtroubles in the early stages

Be prepared to meet several sandyspots y9u have an opportunity todo your training work hills pre-dominate use your efforts in runningup these hills Do not change thestride that you have teen using on thelevel roads any than you canhelp Your stride wilt shorten perceptibly upgrade but you mustthere are downgrades to relieve thespent energy when the ups anddowns between Laurel andton are taken into consideration itsabout an even break

The fastest running In the intercityrace other the first three mileswill be between and WashIngtou although tle roads betweenBeltvllle and Bladensburg are not halfbad At Contee about three miles fromthe start of the race the roads com-mence to get soft and sandy butare-In no condition than the roadsfrom Ashland to Framlngham the twoMassachusetts towns that mark thecurse of the socalled Boston bilHard table route

After over the course fromWashington to Laurel and a returnfrom the town where the start will bemade to the finishing line in front ofThe Times I would call thecourse a stiff one but not half ashard as the original course at Athensanti It compares favorably with thethree routes used m New York city

There is going to be some fOOlish run-ning by a few novices during the firstthree miles of this race do yourtraining with the knowledge that thereare some tough and sandy roadsbetween fourth and the tenthmuGs
