YUCCA MOUNTAIN PROJECTBIOLOGICAL RESOURCES PROGRAM

MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORTAPRIL 1994

Summary of Work Accomplished During Report Period

EG&G Energy Measurements (EG&G/EM) conducted work for the Biological ResourcesTask (WBS 1.2.13.4.11) for the Project Office.

ISSUES and CONCERNS

0 Construction of an underground waterline extending from the blue watertanks nearFortymile Wash to Exile Hill, was to be completed by March 1994. The portion of thewaterline from the north point of Fran Ridge to the south point of Exile Hill is notcompleted and an open trench 0.5 to 1 m deep still exists and may fragment tortoisehabitat. This trench should be filled as soon as possible. Until the trench is filled,EG&G/EM biologists are monitoring the trench twice each day to ensure no tortoiseshave fallen into the trench.

WORK PROGRESS

* In March 1994, concern was expressed regarding the aboveground 8-inch waterlineblocking tortoise's movements on the west side of Fran Ridge in Midway Valley(March 1994 Monthly Report). EG&G/EM monitored the waterlines to determinewhether any tortoises were affected. Monitoring will continue until mitigationmeasures can be implemented or it is determined that the waterline is not a problem. In April the same concern was addressed for the C-Well waterline from the blue tanks(near J-13 Well) to the proposed spreading basin in Fortymile Wash. An addendum tothe preactivity survey report for this project was submitted to Project Officerecommending that the waterlines be elevated to avoid blocking tortoises.

* EG&G/EM conducted three preactivity surveys to assess potential impacts on biologicalresources and three reclamation inventories. One biological resource survey report andone reclamation stipulation report were submitted to Project Office.

* All other work was part of continuing studies. Radiomarked desert tortoises werelocated at least once each week. Small mammals were captured, marked, and releasedon eight plots to monitor the effects of site characterization activities. Measurementsof vegetation cover were started on the 48 ecological study plots. Cover measurementswere completed on 28 plots. Seedling density was measured on the reclamation plots atsite 4, the borrow pit topsoil stockpile, and JF-3 Well.

* EG&G/EM participated in the "Bring-your-daughter-to-work" day at the request ofProject Office.

* REG&G/EM provided a discussion of the reclamation program at Yucca Mountain for atour by the State of Nevada.

YUCCA MOUNTAIN PROJECTBIOLOGICAL RESOURCES PROGRAM

MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORTMAY 1994

Summary of Work Accomplished During Report Period

EG&G Energy Measurements (EG&G/EM) conducted work for the BiologicalResources Task (WBS 1.2.13.4.11) for the Project Office.

ISSUES and CONCERNS

0 YMP participants need to notify Project Office (or EG&G/EM directly if specifiedby Project Office) at least ten working days before construction activities are tooccur so that additional surveys or other mitigation actions can be conducted.EG&G/EM continues to receive requests for surveys from participants one to twodays before the activity is to begin (request received on Friday for Monday start). In some cases the activity has not received documented approval from ProjectOffice. For EG&G/EM to provide the necessary services to ensure compliance ofconstruction activities without jeopardizing other activities, advanced notice must begiven by YMP participants and Project Office.

WORK PROGRESS

* EG&G/EM conducted four preactivity surveys to assess potential impacts onbiological resources and four reclamation inventories. Five biological resourcesurvey reports and four reclamation stipulation reports were submitted to ProjectOffice. A construction site for a ramp near drill pad SD-9 was resurveyed fortortoises. The C-Well pipeline and 8-inch waterline were monitored for tortoisesthroughout the month to ensure tortoises were not trapped or injured.

* All other work was part of continuing studies. Radiomarked desert tortoises werelocated at least twice each week. Female desert tortoises were x-rayed andmonitored to assess reproductive effort Side-blotched lizards were captured, marked, and released on nine plots to monitor the effects of site characterizationactivities. Measurements of vegetation cover were completed on the 48 ecologicalstudy plots. Seedling density was measured on the reclamation plots at JF-3 Well, site 1 (soil quality and depth study), and site 5. Plant cover was measured at site 3.Soil samples were collected at the borrow pit and NRG-6 topsoil stockpile foranalysis of microbial activity and soil properties. Soil samples also were collectedat the plant succession study plots for analysis of soil properties.
