“Your Future Begins With Us” News from St. Joachim School

Mission Statement The mission of St. Joachim Catholic School is to assist the parents and parish community in the shared responsibility of providing an excellent religious and academic education that is Alive in Christ for the children of Washington County. FROM THE DESK OF MRS. LITTON...... St. Joachim School Office opened August 1. School will begin on Wednesday, August 15th. Another great year is expected. We begin the year sharing faith, kindness and compassion. Quality teachers have returned and newly employed to educate our students. Many thanks to Mr. Ray Thebeau who worked diligently to clean, buff and paint the building. By the 15th rooms will be completed and the teachers will have their schedules and lesson plans ready for introduction. Fr. Tony leads us as our Pastor Carmen Litton, Principal (Office: 573-438-3973) Preschool & Pre-K teachers: Mrs. Baylee Saunders & Mrs. Vicky Haynes, Mrs. Irish Mary Boyer and Mrs. Nancy Dubuque volunteer as aides. Kindergarten & First Grade: Mrs. Peg Portell Second & Third Grades: Mrs. Debbie Koch Fourth & Fifth Grades: Miss Breanna Juliette Sixth - Eighth Grades: Mrs. Pam Boyer Mr. Steve Davis will return to teach PE, Mrs. Rachel Pratt will work with students in art, Miss Tiffany for music and seasonal plays, Miss Cyrilla Boyer with Mrs. Heuer are the school librarians and Mrs. Felicia is cooking for us Monday-Thursday. Mrs. Dana Boyd is the school secretary and I am presently working on hiring a Title I teacher. We could possibly get a few more great volunteers to help us throughout the year. I am pleased with our wonderful and dedicated staff. There is much more coming such as a robotic grant, updates on the building and possible technology. Good teaching takes time and effort. Our teachers and staff are dedicated to both. Please don't hesitate to stop by and visit the school and classrooms before the 15th. We are proud of our accomplishments. A new hallway has been laid on the main floor which gives a clean and tidy presentation. Thanks to Fr. Tony for the update. We face challenges just like all schools. St. Joachim's challenges are conquered through applying our faith in God. If you are interested in your children having Jesus in their lives please call the office or Mrs. Litton personally to set up an appointment for enrollment. God bless our school, parish families, students and administration.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Standing Out One of the challenges we face in evangelization is connecting with the culture in order to penetrate it and refine it with Gospel values. Many people have fallen prey to the culture in this process and have forgotten their goal. As Christians, we should stand out, especially in the hyper-secularized culture in which we find ourselves in the Western world in 2018. It is important for us to consider where we have come from and where we are going as disciples of Jesus Christ. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Ephesians that we must put away the old self and not live as the Gentiles do. We can certainly meet others on their terms, but we must avoid the trap of forgetting that our task is to help lead them away from a dull and sterile existence, consumed by evanescent pleasures. As baptized Christians, we are called to lead new and transformed lives in the power of the Holy Spirit. Let’s stand out! We do not need to be pompous or attention-seeking, but authentic Christians will be recognized as different in this world.

THIS WEEKS READINGS - “The Lord gave them bread from heaven,” we sing in the responsorial psalm today, and we hear two examples of this generosity in today’s readings. In Exodus, the Lord provided manna to the Chosen People when they were famished in the desert. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the crowd that God gives them the true bread from heaven: Jesus, the Bread of Life. As Saint Paul writes to the Ephesians, nourished by Jesus, we can now “put on the new self.” QUESTION OF THE WEEK- What nourishment have I received in the Eucharist today? How will that sustain me as I “put on” my new self this week?

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL UPDATE: We want to THANK all our parishioners you donated and participated in the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal! Your sacrifice helps our school with much needed grants. Our challenge goal this year was $17,155.00. To date we have received $16,665.00. We are $500 short! Out of the 215 parishioners who receive a pledge card in our parish, 110 have responded with a pledge. We would like to challenge those who have not responded to consider pledging $5.00 so that we can reach our goal!

August 5th-Word of Life “We felt we had no control, but God reminded us again that He is always in control and that we could trust in Him. ... Andrew* is two years old now, and... we can’t imagine loving a child whom we conceived more than we love Andrew.”

Soccer practice starts August 7th. Practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays for both A & B teams; boys and girls grades 3 - 8. Tuesday 6-8pm, Thursday 6-7:30pm. Please contact Pam Luna at 314-609-9638 if your child is interested in playing and you have not preregistered with athletics. Thank you! Very excited to start the season!

Volleyball practice starts Monday, August 6! We will practice Monday and Thursday nights, 6-8 pm. After the first week, we will be splitting practice up between the two teams, either with A team practicing one night and B team practicing the other, or splitting the gym time both nights. Volleyball is open to St. Joachim School and PSR girls in grades 4-8. Contact Laura Villmer or Jessica Riddle for more information. Laura Villmer @573-760-3968
