The Power of Fresh In 2002, Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee Tom Harkin asked attendees for help in developing a small 4 state program to provide a free fresh fruit and vegetable snack to school children. Today, the program is in all 50 states and provides four million students in our nation’s lowest income elementary schools with a fresh fruit or vegetable snack every day. Since 2008, over $1 billion has been invested in helping kids make healthy choices for a lifetime.

For over 20 years, United Fresh has brought leaders of the fresh produce industry together in our nation’s capital to address the industry’s most pressing public policy matters.

Whether increasing access to more fresh fruits and vegetables for children or confronting food safety challenges, United Fresh has driven many of the policy and regulatory victories that have helped advance the competitiveness of our industry in a world marketplace. One constant over time is the power of the industry coming together to bring a united message to our elected officials. We call this the Power of Fresh.

The Washington Conference is the industry’s annual gathering for strategic, face-to-face dialogue with key members of Congress, their staff and top regulatory officials. Attendees engage directly with top political and policy experts on the issues of the day. And members interact with and learn from fellow industry leaders, offering a unique value to high-potential industry employees as part of our Rising Leaders Program.

The Power of Fresh AdvocacyOne voice is often lost, but a group of voices can drive long-term change!

Every avalanche starts with a single snowflake. In today’s volatile political climate, more people than ever are clamoring to make their voices heard. Your engagement with your personal members of Congress during our annual March on Capitol Hill amplifies the importance of keeping fresh produce on the country’s agenda. With hundreds of simultaneous Congressional visits by people just like you, our voice will ring loud with our elected officials just six weeks before one of the most critical elections of our lifetime.

“We all attend a number of events throughout the year. The Washington Conference is the only platform in which we discuss policy in depth and can bring our message directly to members of Congress. We can express the critical nature of their vote and how their decisions directly impact the future of the fresh produce industry” - Jose Rossignoli, General Manager, Tropical Category, Robinson Fresh

The Power of Fresh PoliticsWe are now witnessing the most unprecedented presidential election in history. Regardless of who ends up on top, both House and Senate races are unsettled for both parties. Your personal outreach to your local members of Congress has never been more important, and that means calling on them personally here in Washington, D.C.

“I know how easy it is to focus solely on our own businesses and forget about the impact that policies set in Washington have on our day-to-day operations. The reality is that federal legislation will have a major effect on all of us in the produce industry now and for years to come. We need to talk directly with our lawmakers and government officials to show them how federal policies affect our business.” - Ron Carkoski, President & CEO, Four Seasons Family of Companies

The Power of Fresh Engagement Participants at The Washington Conference do more than listen to speeches – you actually engage personally with our nation’s leaders and hundreds of industry leaders across the supply chain. We’ll kick off the event this year with an opening reception at the beautiful National Portrait Gallery, networking with colleagues among the historic paintings of every U.S. President. The following night brings our United FreshPAC Election Celebration, featuring the biting satire of the nationally known Capitol Steps comedy troupe.

The Power of Fresh For more than a decade, United Fresh advocated for the addition of fruits and vegetables to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, better known as WIC. Today, more than 8 million at risk, low-income pregnant/breastfeeding women, their infants and young children participate in WIC. The value of the fruit and vegetable vouchers totals $700-800 million per year in new produce purchases.

“It’s unique teambuilding for the produce industry, because there aren’t a lot of other opportunities where we can all get together focused on policies to enhance farming, production agriculture, and the food industry in our country.” – Caitlin Antle Wilson, Tanimura & Antle

The Power of Fresh In 2002 the Washington Conference launched our industry’s demand to reshape the Farm Bill, calling for federal policy to drive increased produce consumption, open international market access, fund food safety research, and develop the tools necessary for a profitable and successful produce industry.

The 2002 Farm Bill began more than a decade of progress advancing progressive and positive agriculture policy to address the unique needs of the fruit and vegetable industry. Our work together has led to over $3 billion invested in the produce industry in the 2014 Farm Bill.

“It’s easy to think that policies set in Washington won’t impact our daily business, or that they are impossible to influence anyway. But nothing could be further from the truth. It’s definitely worth the time and financial investment to go to D.C. and take an active role in the industry’s future. If we don’t who will?” – Douglas Kling, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Village Farms International, Inc.
