From the HeadmasterAcademy Promotes Positive Change

As I looked at the list of articles slated for this issue of our newsletter, I foundmyself contemplating what I often take for granted; the incredible way the Academy’spast and present meld together to form what we are today.

The photos of the Trustee Tea and the Alumni Award recipients reflect formereducators’ and community members’ unrelenting support of the Academy. Their commit-ment established a reputation for academic excellence that we continue to build on today.

The reunion, as well, brought former students back to the Academy to renewtraditions and reminisce about the past. Overhearing their memories about basketballgames, favorite teachers, and a few mischievous deeds made me smile. At the same time,

the discussions renewed mycommitment to provide currentstudents with the same caring andsupportive community that helpedproduce such noble alumni.

One sentiment I heardover and over at the reunion was,“the Academy sure is differentfrom when I was here.” It is thesupport of alumni and friends thathave made those very changespossible. In previous years youhelped put in place the AppliedMath Program and a new

computer lab. This year, supporters are changing the face of WA by adding biotech-nology supplies, a new weather station, library furniture, and many more enhancements.

In addressing the future, we have spent a good portion of the summer talking tostudents about what constitutes a quality education. Despite what the media tells us,these students wanted to be challenged and inspired to achieve great things. Theyreiterated that the most important part of education was having a motivated teacher, nottoo different from the sentiments of alumni who reflect on the impact key faculty had ontheir lives. Much like their adult counterparts, the students also wanted to work withstate-of-the art technology and have pride in a well-kept facility. With a top notch facultyand staff, programs to increase aspirations, a brand new web site and new technology, wewill be working this year to ensure that we can meet those student needs.

One of the challenges the Academy faces is maintaining a diversity of classes andacademic opportunities while enrollment in Washington County continues to decline. This year we will be taking a more proactive role in letting students know what isavailable at WA and looking at attracting others from a broader geographic area. Thisdecline also makes your giving even more important as you help us maintain andincrease our margin of excellence.

I could not be more proud of the position, vitality and energy of the Academy. AndI could not be more grateful to the many administrators, trustees, staff, faculty, students, alumni and family members who have made Washington Academy what it is today.

Changing to Meet Alumni NeedsAs your newly elected President of the WA Alumni

Association, it is a pleasure to work with all of you to makethe next few years an enjoyable period. I will try to keepyou informed of our progress on the biennial festivities.

The new board of officers is researching numerous ideasto make this festive event more enjoyable for everyone. Wehave to “step out of the box” and explore ideas that will suitalumni members, both young and old. For example, we hopeto introduce a social hour prior to sitting down for the meal.It was evident this year that people wanted to roam around andvisit old friends. In the meantime, our goal is “bettercommunication” and we will work on this theme until the nextreunion. We are all open to suggestion so please feel free towrite us a note or e-mail. We already have a weekend offestivities that rates far above other schools; however, it isimperative that we listen to our alumni for new suggestions.I promise you all suggestions will be reviewed and considered.

WA’s semi-annual newsletter has developed into a qualitypublication and we will use this vehicle to give you periodicupdates as we work toward our planning for year 2002.

Respectfully, Richard Young, President Winter address:WA Alumni Association 1803 New Bedford Dr.P.O. Box 466 Sun City Center East Machias, Maine 04630 Florida, [email protected]

Planting a Tree

Mabel Flora Bowles is planting a tree for future WashingtonAcademy students. Recently she and her husbandLeonard decided to make a bequest to the Academy

through their will. Though they will never see the impact oftheir gift, the Academy will benefit from their provision.

Mabel graduated from WA in 1944. Following high school, she moved to Connecticut where she worked as a secretary. Shemarried Leonard Bowles in 1950, also a nativeof Washington County. She later worked atAndrews Air Force Base as a secretary to amajor. The couple moved to Lexington,MA, with their two children in 1961 whileLeonard worked for Lincoln Lab at M.I.T.

Mabel exemplifies the traits of a truelife-long learner. Since her childrenhave grown up, she has learned tofigure skate, skating with a group inBoston Garden, and has taken upsynchronized swimming. She andLeonard have also traveled around theworld, visiting every continent.

Mabel has fond memories of heryears at WA including commercial courses, assemblies, and Gardner Pope playingthe saxophone. Though hereducational experience at theAcademy was much differentfrom today, she extols thesolid foundation shereceived and the newchanges that are takingplace. Says Mabel,“It’s nice to see theAcademy progressingand keeping up withthe rest of the world.”

Her generous giftcomes from a desire to investin the educational future ofstudents. Her investment is a wise one.The Academy extends its thanks to Mabel andLeonard and looks forward to seeing themmore often as they enjoy their retirementyears on Bog Lake.

Providing ShadeCharles Look is providing shade for those who will follow

behind him. By naming the Academy as the beneficiary on hislife insurance policy, he has helped secure the Academy’s future. His gift was motivated in part by all the changes that havealready taken place at WA. He recalls, “When I went to school, there was only the Original Academy Building. The place where

the Alumni Building is now was just a ballfield. I can see how far the Academy has

come since I was there and it’s good.”Mr. Look left the Academy in the

late 50’s to join the Air Force as a jetbomber mechanic. Following his time in

the service, he returned home to workat Look’s Canning Company and onthe construction of the Naval Base in

Cutler. The majority of hiscareer was spent as a

machinist inConnecticut. He laterreturned once again toWashington County, giving his fourchildren theopportunity to attendthe Academy.

The trustees,faculty, staff and

students are gratefulto Charles and his

wife, Elaine, fortheir foresightandgenerosity.

We are pleasedto have them as

new members of theLegacy Circle, a society dedicated

to ensuring the future financial healthof the Academy through planned gifts.

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
