Lessons From The Healing of Naaman The Leper

2 Kings 5

10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him saying Go and wash in the Jordan seven times and your flesh shall be restored to you and you shall be clean

Isaiah 558-shy‐9 says ldquoFor My thoughts are not your thoughts Nor are your ways My waysrdquo declares the Lord For as the heavens are higher than the earth So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughtsrdquo

Jeremiah 1023 says ldquoI know O Lord that a manrsquos way is not in himself nor is it in a man who walks to direct his stepsrdquo

Proverbs 1412 says ldquoThere is a way which seems right to a man but its end is the way of deathrdquo


Naaman nearly rejected the prospect of physical healing because the conditions did not conform to his expectations (2 Kings 51-14) In like manner many reject Godrsquos terms of spiritual pardon as expressed through the gospel (Acts 236-38 226-16 Gal 326-27 1 Pet 320-21)


2 Kings 51 (NKJV) 1 Now Naaman commander of the army of the king of Syria was a great and honorable

man in the eyes of his master because by him the LORD had given victory to Syria He was

also a mighty man of valor but a leper


His position -shy‐ Commander of the army of Benhadad I the king of Syria

His popularity and prestige -shy‐ A great and honorable man in the eyes of his master -shy‐ (cf Acts 1012)

Used by God -shy‐ the Lord gave victory to Syria by Naaman

His problem -shy‐ a Leper


The term leprosy referred to several types of skin diseases rooted in the blood stream

Some types were incurable and led to horrible consequences

Leprosy stood as a picture of sin -shy‐


Sin like leprosy in Bible times is incurable by man ndash Sin like leprosy is loathsome amp defiling ndash Sin like leprosy causes separation ndash Sin like leprosy unless cured -shy‐ causes death -shy‐


2 Kings 52-9 (NKJV) 2 And the Syrians had gone out on raids and had brought

back captive a young girl from the land of Israel She waited on Naamans wife 3 Then she said to her mistress

If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria For he would heal him of his leprosy 4 And

Naaman went in and told his master saying Thus and thus said the girl who is from the land of Israel


2 Kings 52-9 (NKJV) 5 Then the king of Syria said Go now and I will send a letter to the king of Israel So he departed and took with

him ten talents of silver six thousand shekels of gold and ten changes of clothing 6 Then he brought the letter to the king of Israel which said Now be advised when

this letter comes to you that I have sent Naaman my servant to you that you may heal him of his leprosy


2 Kings 52-9 (NKJV) 7 And it happened when the king of Israel read

the letter that he tore his clothes and said Am I God to kill and make alive that this man sends a man to me to heal him of his leprosy Therefore please consider and see how he seeks a quarrel

with me


2 Kings 52-9 (NKJV) 8 So it was when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes that he sent to the

king saying Why have you torn your clothes Please let him come to me and he shall know that there is a

prophet in Israel 9 Then Naaman went with his horses and chariot and he stood at the door of Elishas house


A young girl from Israel (23) ndash told of the prophet who could heal ndash (do we share the gospel with those who are lost like this young girl shared her knowledge of the prophet)

Naaman approaches the king ndash Benhadad I (4-shy‐6) ndash who sends Naaman to Joram the king of Israel with a letter-shy‐


Naaman goes to the wrong person -shy‐ the king of Israel (7) ndash Joram thought Benhadad was trying to pick a fight ndash

Elisha calls for Joram to send Naaman to him (8) ndash

Naaman goes to see Elisha with his loaded horses and chariots (9) ndash


2 Kings 510-12 (NKJV) 10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him saying Go and wash in the Jordan seven times and your flesh shall be restored to you and you

shall be clean 11 But Naaman became furious and went away and said Indeed I said to

myself


2 Kings 510-12 (NKJV) He will surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God and wave his hand over the place and heal the leprosy 12 Are not the

Abanah and the Pharpar the rivers of Damascus better than all the waters of Israel Could I not wash in them and be clean So he turned and went away in a rage


Elisha sends a servant out to Naaman ndash (10a)

Naaman is told to Go and wash in the Jordan seven times and your flesh shall be restored to you and you shall be clean ndash (10b)

Naaman became furious ndash (11) because Godrsquos plan didnrsquot fit his plan ldquobehold I thoughtrdquo


Naamanrsquos pride was insulted ndash (10a)

Naaman had preconceived ideas -shy‐ (11)

Naaman thought that substituting for Godrsquos specific instruction would be OK ndash (12a) ndash

Naaman leaves in a rage ndash (12b)


God has offered salvation from sin through His Son Jesus Christ -shy‐ (Mat 1128-shy‐30 Mk 1616 John 824 Acts 238 2216)

No substitute for Godrsquos way will cleanse us from our sins -shy‐ (2 Thes 17-shy‐9)

Why are people today so resistant to Godrsquos way


2 Kings 513-14 (NKJV) 13 And his servants came near and spoke to him and said My father if the prophet had told you to do something

great would you not have done it How much more then when he says to you Wash and be clean 14 So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan according to the saying of the man of God and his flesh was restored

like the flesh of a little child and he was clean


Naaman is approached by his servants -shy‐ ldquoIf the prophet had told you to do some great thing would you not have done itrdquondash (13)

Naaman humbles himself obeys Godrsquos instructions amp receives Godrsquos gift of being healed ndash (14)


Naaman confesses the one true God ndash (15)

Elisha wouldnrsquot receive Naamanrsquos payment for healing ndash (16 Eph 28-shy‐10 Rev 216 2217)

Naaman still demonstrated a lack of understanding ndash (17-shy‐19)


We must humbly submit to Godrsquos way -shy‐ (1 Pet 55-shy‐7 Is 5589 Jer 1023 Heb 589)

Like Naaman when we humbly do all that God commands salvation is still a free gift -shy‐ we canrsquot pay for it or earn it -shy‐ (Luke 1710 Acts 104748 Rom 623 Eph 289 Tit 33-shy‐5)


Gehazi greedily pursues Naaman -shy‐ (2021)

Gehazi lies to Naaman amp receives two talents of silver amp two changes of clothing ndash (22-shy‐24)

Gehazi becomes a leper ndash (25-shy‐27)


It is possible to be around the people of God and to engage in the work of God while having a heart that is far from God (v 20)

Sin has a way of finding us out (v 26 Num 3223)

The God who heals the trusting also punishes the erring (v 27)


Do we recognize the seriousness of sin (Rom 323 623)

Do you seek deliverance in the right place (Acts 237 Acts 412 Rom 116 Col 211-shy‐13)

You can be healed today (Mat 1128-shy‐30 Acts 238 1 Pet 321)

We all need to grow in Christ ndash (Col 1910 2 Pet 318)

We must remain faithful -shy‐ (1 Cor 1558 Col 123)


Acts 2216 (NKJV)

16 And now why are you waiting Arise

and be baptized and wash away

your sins calling on the name of the

Lord
