DUBAI TRAVEL GUIDE

11- Dubai Walking Tour: Bastakiya (http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/city-guides/dubai-walking-

tour-1/)

The tiny Bastakiya quarter is Dubai’s most engaging neighborhood. Established at the end of the 19th century by well-to-do textile and pearl traders from Bastak, Iran, its labyrinthine lanes are lined with restored merchant’s houses, art galleries, cafés, and boutique hotels. “The Bastakiya is a picturesque step into Dubai’s past. It’s big on atmosphere and a delight to wander.”—Sarah Monaghan, author, DK Eyewitness Travel Top 10 Dubai.

Begin the tour in the morning with a cultural breakfast at (1) Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (www.cultures.ae). The center is housed in one of the Bastakiya’s most elegant buildings, with a beautiful courtyard, pretty decorative grilles, hanging oil lamps, and wooden lattice on the second floor. The cultural breakfasts are a rare opportunity to meet Emiratis and learn about local heritage and traditions. Go upstairs for views of the Bastakiya rooftops. Note the wind towers. This traditional form of air-conditioning, constructed to funnel cool air into the house, was an architectural feature of buildings in southern Iran.

Outside, turn left and walk toward the waterfront to admire (2) Bastakiah Nights restaurant in another beautiful courtyard house. The staff is pleased to show people the traditionally decorated rooms and fine views of Dubai Creek from their rooftop.

Stroll down the sandy lane to the modern white mosque, noting the splendid architectural details of the grand gypsum, coral, and limestone buildings, in particular the carved wooden doors with brass knockers and the intricate patterned decorative grilles.

Turn left at the end and walk until you see the last remaining section of the (3) Old City Wall. Constructed in 1800 from gypsum and coral, the defensive wall surrounded the old town of Bur Dubai, which included Al Fahidifort and the old Grand Mosque.

Turn left again and wander down the narrow lane to visit more restored wind-tower houses and enjoy Emirati, Iranian, and Middle Eastern art in several gorgeous galleries. First stop, (4) XVA (www.xvagallery.com), a contemporary art gallery with several exhibition rooms around its shady courtyard café. XVA hosts art-house film screenings (including Middle Eastern films), so check the program while you’re here.

Next door is (5) Ave Gallery, a new space opened by exalted Iranian artist, art collector, and curator, Fereydoun Ave. Behind Ave is (6) Majlis Gallery (www.majlisgallery.com), Dubai’s oldest commercial art gallery, here since the 1970s. Situated in another beautiful house, Majlis specializes in more mainstream art such as Asian oils and watercolors of desert landscapes, along with calligraphy and sculpture. Find a souvenir among the beautiful ceramics, handicrafts, and jewelry. Across the lane, stop at leafy (7) Basta Art Café, in another splendid courtyard house. Try the Basta Special, a refreshing mint and lime drink.

DUBAI TRAVEL GUIDE

12- Dubai Walking Tour: Dubai Creek and Shindagha (http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/city-

guides/dubai-walking-tour-2/)

“Dubai Creek is the bustling heart of old Dubai.”—Zoe Rawlins, editor, Visitor Magazine. The Shindagha area, at the mouth of the creek, is the site of its oldest settlement in modern Dubai. After the Liwa-based Bani Yas tribe divided in 1833, the Shindagha was where the Maktoum tribe settled. With its grand wind-tower residences, heritage attractions, and alfresco eateries, the Shindagha waterfront is a great place to spend an evening. “There’s nothing like heading to the waterfront for a stroll and a spot of people-watching, especially at sunset.”—Claire Malcolm, editor, Concierge magazine. Start in the late afternoon so you finish in time for dinner.

Begin the tour at (1) Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi Fort to learn about Dubai’s dramatic transformation from tiny fishing village to cosmopolitan city. From the museum’s exit on Al Fahidi Street, turn left into 62A Street and walk past the white (2) Diwan (Ruler’s office) toward the understated multi-domed (3) Grand Mosque (closed to non-Muslims). The lane beside the mosque leads to (4) Hindi Lane, a vibrant alleyway of little shops selling colorful Hindu and Sikh offerings destined for the nearby temples.

At the end of the alley you’ll see the wooden arcade of (5) Bur Dubai Suq which runs parallel to Dubai Creek. Continue past the textile shops to the water’s edge, taking in the bustle of abras (water taxis) crisscrossing the creek and wooden dhows (boats) being loaded.

Back in the textile suq, stroll under the wooden latticed arches sheltering scores of shops selling everything from saris to sparkling Aladdin slippers.

When you come to a fork, take the left lane and stop at the (6) Indian snack stalls for some spicy samosas or tasty sweets. At the suq’s exit, turn right and head to the creek. Walk along the waterfront, passing busy (7) Bur Dubai Abra Station, until you reach old (8) Shindagha Tower, on your left.

Continue along the Shindagha waterfront, where elegant wind-tower residences now house centers for Islamic studies and architectural heritage. The highlight is the former home of Dubai’s ruling Maktoum dynasty (9) Sheikh Saeed al Maktoum

House. Built by Sheikh Saeed’s father, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum, in 1896, the house was home to the ruling family until Sheikh Saeed’s death in 1958. It now houses a fascinating collection of stamps, coins, and illuminating photographs of Dubai taken through the 20th century.

Stroll along the waterfront to see the barasti (palm-frond) huts, old coffeehouse, handicraft suq, and pearl-diving displays at the (10) Heritage and Diving Village, a recreation of the fishing village that once stood here. Try traditional dosa (flat bread) made by veiled local ladies, but save room for an Arabic feast at (11) Kan Zaman restaurant overlooking the water. Return to the Bur Dubai abra station and hire one for an enchanting moonlit cruise down the creek.

DUBAI TRAVEL GUIDE

13- Dubai Walking Tour: Old Deira (http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/city-guides/dubai-walking-

tour-3/)

Old Deira, on the north side of the creek, is home to Dubai’s chaotic suqs. It’s best visited in the evening from 5 p.m. on, when it’s at its most atmospheric, but if you must visit in the morning, start around 10 a.m., as most shops close by 1 p.m. to avoid the afternoon heat. “Carry a bottle of water at all times, and don’t be shy to hail a taxi, no matter how far you’re going, especially in summer—nobody walks in 113°F (45°C) heat.”—Claire Turrell, editor, VIVA magazine.

Start the walk at (1) Deira Old Suq abra station and cross the road to the (2) Spice Suq, an assault on all senses. Outside the spice shops stand sacks overflowing with frankincense, sumac, zaatar, cinnamon, cloves, and other aromatic spices, while inside shelves are lined with everything from henna shampoo to tiny boxes of saffron—excellent value in Dubai. Buy some frankincense, an incense burner, and coals.

At the suq’s exit on Al Abra Street, hang a right. Walk to the end of the street, turn left into Al Ras Street, continue until Al Hadd Street, and then go right. The fascinating wholesale shops here trade foodstuffs with Iran via the dhows down on the creek.

Head right into Al Ahmadiya Street and continue until you reach (3) Heritage House (1890), a splendid example of a pearl merchant’s residence. Inside, kitsch mannequins in traditional dress reveal how they lived at the time. This house belonged to Sheikh Ahmed bin Dalmouk, who, along with his son, built adjoining (4) Al Ahmadiya School, one of Dubai’s oldest schools, responsible for educating some of the city’s most prominent citizens. At the school’s entrance admire the exquisite decorative gypsum panels. Inside, fascinating black-and-white photos illustrate the school’s history.

Walk along Al Ahmadiya Street, turning right into Old Baladiya Street, a lane of wholesalers mainly trading in traditional sandals, and gutra and agal, the headdress worn by Emirati men. Further down the street a wooden latticed arch marks the entrance to Dubai’s (5) gold suq, home to myriad shops with dazzling displays of gold jewelry in their windows. Be prepared to bargain.

On the side streets are small cafeterias, tiny tailoring shops, neon-lit barbers, and souvenir shops selling belly dance costumes. Walk to the end of the wooden arcades then continue along Sikkat al Khail Street to the (6) perfume suq. This is where Emirati women and gulf tourists bargain for spicy Arabian attars (perfume oils) and elaborate perfume bottles. In the surrounding back streets, the narrow alleyways of (7) Deira covered suq are lined with stores selling traditional kandouras (long robes), textiles, shisha pipes, souvenirs, and not coincidentally, lots of cheap luggage.

Walk to the corner of Sikkat al Khail Street and Al Soor Street where you can revive with a fresh mango juice and delicious shawarma at (8) Ashwaq Cafeteria.

DUBAI TRAVEL GUIDE

• Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was initiated by the late President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His final resting place is located on the grounds beside the same mosque. The public bus stop is a 100 metres before the mosque and after that is no stop for the next 5km.

Some Key Architectural Features

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has many special and unique elements: The carpet in the main prayer hall is considered to be the world's largest carpet made by Iran's Carpet Company and designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi. This carpet measures 5,627 m2 (60,570 sq ft), and was made by around 1,200-1,300 carpet knotters. The weight of this carpet is 35 ton and is predominantly made from wool (originating from New Zealand and Iran). There are 2,268,000,000 knots within the carpet and it took approximately two years to complete.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has seven imported chandeliers from Germany that incorporate millions of Swarovski crystals. The largest chandelier is the second largest known chandelier inside a mosque, the third largest in the world and has a 10 m (33 ft) diameter and a 15 m (49 ft) height.

The pools along the arcades reflect the Mosque’s spectacular columns, which becomes even more glorious at night. The unique lightning system was designed by lightning architects Jonathon Speirs and Major to reflect the phases of the moon. Beautiful bluish gray clouds are projected in lights onto the external walls and get brighter and darker according to the phase of the moon.

The 96 columns in the main prayer hall are clad with marble and inlaid with mother of pearl, one of the few places where you will see this craftsmanship.

The 99 names (qualities or attributes) of Allah (God) are featured on the Qibla wall in traditional Kufi calligraphy, designed by the prominent UAE calligrapher - Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi. The Qibla wall also features subtle fibre-optic lighting, which is integrated as part of the organic design.

In total, three calligraphy styles - Naskhi, Thuloth and Kufi – are used throughout the mosque and were drafted by Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi UAE, Farouk Haddad Syria and Mohammed Allam Jordan

There are several gardens lined all along the Corniche around the coastal boulevard that borders the city. The ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, loves greenery and gardens and fountains are the result of that love. The other important feature of the city is the fountains and can be seen on every intersection of the Corniche. With the modern buildings facing the sea for the background, it is one of the most picturesque sites in Abu Dhabi. Some of the sensational sandy beaches of Abu Dhabi are located along the seafront Corniche.

• Flagpole: At 123m, this was among the world's tallest flagpoles where UAE flag hanging off it. On Marina Island across from Marina Mall.

• Khalifa Park, (off Al Salam St (8th) near the Grand Mosque). The best park by far, built at a cost of $50 million. Has its own aquarium, museum, train, play parks and formal gardens.

It occupies a total land area of 2,500 hectares, of which 1,700 hectares will be claimed for development.
