The WASA/Studio A Preservation Group has a staff of architects and architectural conservation specialists offering expertise in building pathology, materials science, water management, historical documentation, condition surveys and analysis, and more. Our staff has extensive experience in restoration and rehabilitation design. During the past 35 years, the Preservation Group has completed hundreds of projects with individual construction costs ranging from $100,000 to well over $50 million. Projects planned and designed by WASA/Studio A have received national acclaim and many awards.

We have an in-depth understanding of the historic, scientific, aesthetic, social and spiritual values which may apply to buildings of cultural significance. All interventions designed by WASA/Studio A carefully consider the implications to authenticity and site significance within the framework of national and international documents and the overall management context. We have extensive experience successfully procuring approvals from various jurisdiction agencies, such as local historic preservation commissions and

State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO).Our Preservation Group enjoys an international reputation for its sensitive and technically rigorous approach to the restoration and repair of historically-significant structures. We combine our technical expertise with our commitment to design excellence to maintain the historical quality and patina of restored buildings. We offer realistic alternatives that assist the Owner in making intelligent decisions about the most appropriate solutions for the preservation and repair of historic and contemporary buildings. We collaborate with WASA/Studio A’s Architecture Group and MEP Engineering Group to meld the old and new in an appropriate and sensitive way. Significant interior finishes must be disturbed as little as possible to maintain maximum authenticity of fabric, while reinstating their former dignity and splendor, yet still satisfy the functional needs of the users. We perceive adaptive reuse as the ultimate act in sustainability – a layering of new design that respects and enhances the original, fulfills programmatic requirements, and upgrades infrastructure, while providing beautifully designed interventions of our era.
