Current Situation of Bike Room

•Challenging physical layout•Crowded and lacking in organization•Contains bikes whose owners may no

longer reside in the building•Contains other items which should be

thrown away•Poorly functioning rack•Location of storage bins in space means

clear access is needed

Varied Objectives for Bike Room Users•The Warwick Bike Room has two types of

users▫Frequent riders

These are defined as people who bike regularly as commuters or ride frequently on weekends (perhaps increasing use April through October, due to more conducive weather for bike travel)

▫Bike Storage users These are defined as people who live in the

Warwick, own a bike, and believe they may ride that bike one day in the future.

The Low-hanging Fruit #1• Tag bike with Apt. # and Type (F.R. or S.)

▫ Tonight’s attendees will receive tags▫ Notices to get tags from Charley will be posted in the

mail room and bike room door • All bikes untagged after October 15th, 2011 will be

removed and given to charity

• BENEFIT: Clarify which are abandoned bikes and help reduce the clutter.

• BENEFIT: Sort bikes by type to properly allocate space.

• BENEFIT: A listing of bike model connected to apartment will be compiled and given to Charley and posted in Bike Room, avoiding future ownerless bikes.

The Low-hanging Fruit #2• Acquire FREE d.-provided (DC Dept. of

Transportation) outdoor bike rack.• I have already met with the WABA

representative who handles these requests, and we have selected a location and discussed it with Charley (photos next slide).

• BENEFIT: Provides easy access to bike parking in good weather months for Warwick residents and visitors.

• BENEFIT: Avoids bike lock-ups to signposts creating better visual appeal for the building.

The Low-hanging Fruit #2 Continued

Our rack will look like this once it is in place. We will need to mulch around it.

Proposed location outside the front entrance of the Warwick. Already missing grass, so mulching will not kill current cover. It will actually make area more attractive.

The Next Phase

•After we’ve cleaned out the dead wood and know what we are dealing with…we will1. Designate different spaces in Bike Room

by user type, so that Frequent Rider bikes are more accessible.

2. Install new bike racks.3. Have a system to add new bikes to the

Bike Room master list.

Discussion of Phase Two1. Designate different spaces in Bike Room by

user type, so that Frequent Rider bikes are more accessible.

• Given the odd configuration of the Bike Room (see diagram on next page), segmentation of the areas by user type is useful.

• An additional proposal has been to place a bike rack in the Laundry Room (along the wall opposite the entry door) which could be used by F.R.s.• PRO: easy in and out of the building• CON: not in a locked room with only resident access;

non-Bike Room users and random visitors/guests could see bikes, which could increase theft and damage vs. being located in non-visible location

2. Have a system to add new bikes to the Bike Room master list.

• Use online Google form to capture information and drop into an excel spreadsheet.

• Charley can have new move-ins with bikes complete the form (can email the link).

• Print out update versions every Nov. and May and post in Bike Room.

• Post notice in Bike Room if you are moving out to scratch through bike listing on posted master list. Charley should check this before printing out the 6-monthly list.
