Remarks from the Chair The weather is on the up and we can get out in the gardens again after all the rain helped those pesky little (now big) weeds! Our AGM this year is on Monday 13 TH September 2021 and, as you may be aware there are quite a few vacancies. With this in mind the committee are asking all members to please think about taking on a role this year to enable our u3a to continue. It would be a great shame to think that all our hard work has been in vain! At the end of this newsletter there is information about the vacant officer and committee positions, with nomination forms for both. These are all very rewarding positions so, please, do consider putting yourselves forward. If, for any reason, you can’t print the forms should you need one, then please ask one of the committee who will make sure you get a copy. Remarks from the Chair

The weather is on the up and we can get out in the gardens again after all the rain helped those pesky little (now big)

weeds!

Our AGM this year is on Monday 13TH

September 2021 and, as you may be aware there are quite a few vacancies.

The most important one is the Chairman’s as without a chairman Warsop and District u3a cannot continue to run and

will have to be dissolved.

With this in mind the committee are asking all members to please think about taking on a role this year to enable our

u3a to continue. It would be a great shame to think that all our hard work has been in vain!

At the end of this newsletter there is information about the vacant officer and committee positions, with nomination

forms for both. These are all very rewarding positions so, please, do consider putting yourselves forward. If, for any

reason, you can’t print the forms should you need one, then please ask one of the committee who will make sure you

get a copy.

If you would be interested in finding out more about any of the officer or committee roles then please do contact me.

It will give you the opportunity to shadow us in our positions and learn more about what our roles involve.

It makes sense for us to pass on our knowledge to other members to enable this u3a to continue.

The committee have been keeping an eye on the government guidelines and are looking forward to giving you the

information, hopefully soon, as to when we can start meeting face to face…watch this space.

As usual at the moment there are limited groups going on but the walking group had its first outing last month, the

photography group are having their first outdoor meeting soon and the history groups are still running zoom meetings.

I hope you all remain safe and enjoy the weather.

Warsop u3a constitution The committee has been advised by u3a head office to adopt an updated version of the u3a

constitution. This is mainly due to the need for zoom meetings and the way meetings are run.

All members will receive a copy of the updated constitution either as an electronic copy sent with

this newsletter, or as a hard copy for those members who have the newsletter posted.

It Sounds Noisy BUT Fun Dukeries U3A are hoping to start a Uke n' Sing Ukulele group at the end of July. Most of us are

beginners, (apart from the teacher!) We plan to meet on Thursday mornings for an hour, cost

£1, venue to be finalised. If any of your members would care to join us, they would be most welcome.

Please contact Linda Bond (Dukeries U3A) Tel. O1623 861 595, or by email. [email protected]

Thank you

U3a Member Link There is a copy of a circular from The Third Age Trust towards the end of the newsletter, outlining

ways that u3a members can link together. Both online and offline. Have a look it might be of interest.

Group News

Group Leaders For various reasons we now have four groups without a current leader, these are GARDENING,

FRIENDSHIP GROUP, TALK ROOM and FRENCH CONVERSATION. If you feel you could fill one of

these roles please contact any member of the committee. Remember that it does not have to be one

person the role can be shared.

Walking Group We started the group on the 20th May. It was short circular walk of about an hour and a half,

along Burns Lane, up Broomhill Lane and into the woods, returning back to the Carrs just before the

rain started.

There was of five us who were eager for company and just to get out there on a walk. Several people

in the group took advantage of easing of lockdown to get away on well deserved holidays.

Sadly there will be no walk for June as there is no leader available.

The next walk will be a local walk on Thursday 15th July from the Carrs in Warsop.

Regards

Sharon Higton.

Most of the last month we have continued ‘On line’ with the last Themed Challenge being PLANT

LIFE.

Today Wednesday 2nd June 21, was the first outdoor meeting, held on the Carrs in Warsop. We

were lucky in that, the weather was dry and sunny and the 2 adult swans and their 7 cygnets who

were nearby were mostly happy to pose for the cameras.

Below are some of the images from the PLANT LIFE challenge.

History Group

The speaker at the 18th May 2021 meeting was James Wright of Triskele Heritage. James is a

buildings archaeologist, he doesn’t dig he looks at buildings, how they are constructed, what they are

constructed of and their historical significance.

His talk would be based on the MYTH that many British pubs are built from ships timbers and in

particular wrecks from the Spanish Armada and the Battle of Trafalgar.

Many pubs advertise and promote the “fact” that they are built using ships timbers. Many of these

pubs are as far from the coast as you can get in this country, such as Derbyshire and West

Yorkshire. Most of the wrecks of the Armada where off the coast of Northern France, in the North

Sea, or off the coast of North Scotland and the West of Ireland in the Atlantic. How these timbers

managed to arrive in Derbyshire is anyone’s guess. The answer is they didn’t.

As for the Battle of Trafalgar, this took place in the Bay of Trafalgar, which is off the coast of

Spain near Cadiz, north of Gibraltar, about 2000 miles from Britain. A long way to transport

shipwrecked timbers! Immediately after the battle there was a great storm and many of the

Spanish/French Fleet that was taken as prize sank, so only four captured ships reached Gibraltar

relatively intact. These would not have been scrapped but renamed and put into service in the British

Royal Navy.

What must also be considered was the difficulty in raising sunken vessels. Most of us can remember

the raising of the “Mary Rose” in the Solent in 1982. This was only at a depth of 12 metres, less than

40 feet. It took a colossal engineering effort to raise it and took many years to achieve, imagine

trying to do that in the 16th Century. Henry VIII hired Italians specializing in raising wrecks, to try

and raise the “Mary Rose” but they could not do it.

James cited many examples of pubs claiming to be built from Armada and Trafalgar wrecks and other

supposed shipwrecks. He also talked about building alterations which may have had some ships

timbers, but certainly not the historic battle wrecks. He also described some of the carpentry

methods used.

In conclusion it can be safely accepted that the pubs claiming to be made from Armada or Trafalgar

timbers are most definitely not.

Next month’s meeting will be via Zoom on Tuesday 15th June 2021 at 10:00am. The talk will centre on

Murder and Mystery around Mansfield.

Silver Screeners Mansfield Odeon and Worksop Savoy both websites say that it will be returning soon.

Notice of Warsop and District Annual General Meeting (AMG)

Monday 13th September 2021 10.15am at Tudor Barn, Church Warsop, or Via

Zoom

It will soon be our AGM and these papers are in preparation for the event.

At the AGM the membership has to vote in the four Honorary officer posts of Chair, Vice-

Chair, Treasurer and Business Secretary.

The current officers, Zena Inger - Chair, Vacant - Vice-Chair and June Whittle - Business

secretary will all be retiring as they have completed their term of office. It’s time for the

next generation to undertake these roles. Linda Crossley – Treasurer is able to stand again

as the constitution allows, although if you feel that you would like to take on this role then

please do nominate yourself.

At this meeting all of the committee will be retiring, however anyone retiring may stand for

re-appointment apart from those stated above.

All of these positions are open for nominations and the nominating and seconding process

is necessary for each office. More positions are available and nominations would be most

welcome from members wishing to join the committee in an non officer role. Which means

that you would be available to help other committee members as needed, which will

ultimately lessen the load on each individual. The only position that cannot have more than

two members working in the same role is the Chairperson.

The nomination forms are included with this document, the completed forms must be

returned to June Whittle at 18 Normanton Close, Edwinstowe, Notts. NG21 9PF by the 16th

August 2021; the votes will then be taken at the AGM.

The committee holds at least 3 meetings a year, sometimes more. The meeting is currently

held via Zoom and lasts approximately one to two hours. Once covid restrictions lift and life

become more normal the meeting will be held face to face.

Topics range from Membership Numbers, New courses to Funding and Action Planning.

Your real interest in the U3A is more important than skills and abilities, though these are

also very welcome.
