Hello Warriors! We’re more than halfway through our season and our 3 teams have had their fair share of successes. Since our last newsletter, JV took home the trophy in Madison and JV Gold earned top spot at the Prep Thanksgiving showcase. Varsity is fresh off a big win vs. Neuqua (5-1 and streamed multiple times by nvtv17!), JV remains close to 1 st place and JV Gold skated to a 10&1 record during November & December league play. There’s plenty to be thankful for (again) as we head into January. Go Warriors! CONGRATULATIONS JV – Repeat winners of the 2016 Mad City Veterans Cup Warriors Board Brief TOURNAMENT SUCCESS

We will recognize our senior Warriors on January 29th between the JV and varsity games at Canlan Ice Arena against Neuqua Valley HS. Come out and cheer our seniors as they play their last regular season league game. This will be an opportunity to thank our players for their hard work, dedication and wonderful representation of our high school communities (and the game itself promises to be competitive following 5-1 win in December against Neuqua). 2016/17 Seniors:

We couldn’t do it in December but have found a date in January that works for all 3 teams. We’re planning a parent party/get together on January 20th to be held at Draft Picks. SAVE THE DATE! We will communicate more details shortly.

The holidays are for family, friends, celebration and, giving back. This past Thanksgiving and Christmas, Warriors hockey players gave back with a needed “assist” to two local charity events. The Warriors kicked-off the holidays by providing a helping hand to the Naperville Noon Lions Club. Eighteen players from each of the club’s three teams spent the Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving setting up tables, chairs, signage, barricades and event stations at Naperville Central High School’s Field House for the annual Naperville 5K Turkey Trot. This year’s Turkey Trot sold out with 8,000 runners generating nearly $200,000 in support for people with hearing, vision and diabetes needs.

The giving continued over the Christmas holiday with the Warriors’ second annual adoption of three families from Cal’s Angels Twelve Days of Christmas Program. The Program serves families that have a child fighting cancer with special circumstances. On the Saturday before Christmas, 31 hockey players representing each of the Warriors’ three teams, Varsity, JV and JV Gold, gathered to wrap presents for the adopted families. With presents wrapped, the families, living in Aurora, Addison, and Elk Grove Village, were contacted and delivery times were set. Small groups of players then delivered gifts to the very appreciative families ahead of the Christmas holiday.

WARRIORS ASSIST – GIVING BACK DURING THE HOLIDAYS

This year, the program provided Christmas to 60 local area families and 161 children with gifts for the child fighting cancer and their siblings, a holiday dinner for the family, a gingerbread house and additional baked goods, plus fleece blankets, pillows and a Hatchimals for each child. The Warriors Hockey Club is happy to provide the annual contribution of service hours to support people in need in our community. Thank you to all of the Warriors players who gave their time during the busy holiday season to support these two events. A special thank you goes out to the following families for their additional contributions to purchase Cal’s Angels gifts, oversee wrapping activities and deliver gifts: The Knicker, Loftus, Kozari, Schlifke and Dreyfus families. Thank you!

This past December 22nd, twenty-two former Warriors played in our annual alumni game. We had participation from 10 graduating classes, going as far back as 1979! We saw that a few of our former players haven’t lost a step and others, well, we’re glad they’re still joining us . Lots of goals were scored, some of them “highlight of the night’ worthy and goalies Dave Neuman, class of 1979 and Elliot Villeneuve, class of 2019, didn’t get much defensive help! We’re always happy to reunite with these players and look forward to next year! Mike Andrews, JV Gold assistant coach and lifelong student (and teacher) of the game, pointed out an article from the latest USA Hockey magazine that bears repeating and, for our parents, we ask that you encourage your players to read the complete article at www.usahockeymagazine.com. We’ve had many

incidences where our players have hit others from behind and where our players have been on the receiving end, causing injuries (concussions, etc.). Let me be very clear: THERE IS NO PLACE IN OUR GAME FOR THIS AND PLAYERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS ON THE ICE EVEN IF THE PLAY HAPPENS QUICKLY! The stop patch on the back of player jerseys is a reminder that you should not hit a player whose patch is facing you, it’s that simple! 3 things to remember:

1. When going into the boards, try to put up your hands, arm or shoulder to cushion your collision. 2. If you are unable to get your hand, arm or shoulder up to cushion your collision, don’t put your

head down. Heads up, don’t duck! 3. Never check anyone from behind. It’s illegal and dangerous

IT’S NOT TOO LATE!!! HockeyMania is an exciting sweepstakes fundraiser based on goals scored by NHL teams. All game cards have an equal chance to win thousands in prize money based on the performance of the 3 random hockey teams printed on the back during the last 15 weeks of the NHL season (you get 3 new teams each week). To play the game, participants simply add up the goals scored by their 3 teams. Every week, the 10 highest scoring game cards and the 4 lowest scoring game cards win prizes… a new chance in each of the 15 weeks of the sweepstakes! There are 4,060 unique game cards, each of which has a minimum 1 in 19.6 chance to win a prize. Each HockeyMania card is $20, see your team manager for more details. In closing (and belatedly), I want to wish you & your families happy holidays! I hope that this joyful season is filled with health, happiness and plenty of festivities and enjoyment. As always, I’m grateful for your feedback, good or bad. GO WARRIORS!! I’ll see you at the rink.
