The Warrenton Presbyterian February 2014 Pastor’s Corner

What Is Love?

"Love is a many splendored thing…"

"When I fall in love, it will be forever…"

"The first time ever I saw your face…"

"Something in the way she moves…"

So many love songs come to mind when I think about

my wife.

And February is traditionally the Love month. Valen-

tines Day is full of talk about love. Unfortunately,

instead of songs of wondrous, faithful, everlasting

love, many are singing, "What is love? Baby, don't

hurt me, please don't hurt me…"

What about you? What do you think?

The only other day on which so much is said about

love is at weddings. Wondering which Scripture

verse is quoted?

You guessed right! 1 Corinthians 13.

When this chapter is read, it's typical for us to smile

and nod in agreement. Think about it: love is patient,

kind, never jealous, boastful, arrogant, or rude. It

never insists on its own way, is not irritable, pouty, or

peevish. Love is never resentful, and on and on.

But if we really got the point of Paul’s chapter, we

probably wouldn’t be agreeing so much. We'd more

likely be singing, "Another one bites the dust…!"

The kind of radical love God requires of us is far

beyond us. The way just gets too steep and the air too

thin at those high altitudes!

So what’s the solution to the love problem? How do

we get from how we really are to how we ought to

be? How do we ever reach the higher levels of what

love requires?

First, we come to recognize in all humility that we

can’t really pull it off. We’re just not all that good.

Seriously.

Spoiler alert. It’s not in us to be so loving. We want

to be, but we’re not. That’s an enormous realization,

and it requires brutal honesty. Whoever reads the

love chapter and says, “Yep, that’s me alright!” has

completely missed the point.

Second, we come to realize that in our insufficiency is

God’s sufficiency. In our weakness God’s strength is

manifest. What we can’t do, God can. So we say the

famous prayer of St. Augustine, who knew that the

great commands of God are impossible for us to

keep: “Lord, give what you command.” In other

words, “I can’t do it, you can, so empower me to do

what you want me to do.” This is the key to the life

of faith, the life in the Spirit.

Rescue alert. Notice an amazing thing: chapter 13 is

sandwiched right between chapters 12 and 14. Have

you ever noticed that? And chapters 12 and 14 are

about the Holy Spirit and his power to transform all

of life. In other words, Paul is telling us, don’t even

think about producing a Spirit-empowered life with-

out the Spirit. It can’t be done. But with the Spirit of

Christ at the center of everything, anything is possi-

ble.

Finally, the truest and most noticeable mark of the

Spirit’s presence in someone is not their spiritual

vocabulary, the way they look, or their Sunday morn-

ing behavior, but their love.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.

But the greatest of these is love.

May God fill your hearts with his transforming love.

In Christ's love,

Pastor John

From Pastor Carrie:

How quickly Lent is coming upon us. It seems like we were just at the manger and now in a

few weeks we will be preparing our hearts for the cross. Such it is in our journey of faith that

we meander back and forth from the manger to the cross to the grave and to grace that awaits

us. The time of Lent will be upon us at the beginning of March and we are preparing ways in

which the church and community together can take some meditative time in our own lives and

in our lives together as a congregation to listen to Lent as discipline and as grace. During the

time of Lent we will have daily devotionals on the website written by our pastors, staff and

members and we’d invite you to join us in our time of devotions. If you have a story to tell

or thoughts on scripture that you’d like to share, please take the time to write them down

and email them to either Pastor John Snyder or Pastor Carrie to be used in our daily online

devotions. You don’t have to write like C.S. Lewis, you just have to have the heart of one

that is seeking God. We’d invite everyone to join, no matter what age, if children feel called

to write or draw what this time of Lent means to them, if you’d like to offer music we can use

multimedia options, we would encourage all different modes of reflections. I am really look-

ing forward to seeing how God is working among the people of WPC in this contemplative

time of Lent.

DECENTLY AND IN ORDER by Susanne Taylor

THE MISSION STUDY

“By the grace of God, the Warrenton Presbyterian Church exists to create, nurture and em-

power Disciples to be Christ’s faithful witnesses in the community.” I hope these words

sound familiar, as they comprise the Mission Statement for our congregation! They can be

found prominently displayed on the website for our congregation at http://www.wpcva.org.

But what do they say about us, and what God is calling us to be and do? These questions are

at the heart of the next step in the life of our congregation.

At the beginning of January, we were pleased and honored to welcome the Rev. Dr. John I.

Snyder to Warrenton Presbyterian Church as our new Interim Pastor. Together with Pastor

Carrie Evans, he will lead us as we continue to grow in our ministry to the local community,

the region, the nation and indeed, the world; that is, as we continue to nurture, prepare and

support Christian disciples. Additionally, he will be of support to the congregation as we take

the next steps in the process - - and it is a process - - of calling a new regular, installed pastor.

As moderator of the Nominating Committee, later this year, it will be my pleasure to work

with the other members of the committee to select and present to you the names of fellow

members to serve on the Pastor Nominating Committee. But selecting that committee is a

task for later in the process; there is a much more important and timely matter that must pre-

cede the Pastor Nominating Committee, and that is the completion of a Mission Study.

The Session met on Monday evening, January 27, 2014, and was visited by Rev. Lisa Webb,

pastor of the Woodstock Presbyterian Church and who will be the Mission Study Consultant

to our congregation as we enter this process. She shared with us quite a bit of information

that communicated to us some of the steps we must undertake to meet this requirement of both

the denomination and the Shenandoah Presbytery, as well as to ready us for the procedures to

be completed by the Pastor Nominating Committee.

Put simply, the Mission Study is an exploration of both our identity as a congregation cur-

rently, as well as what God is calling us to be and to do. This is fairly easy to state, a little

more difficult to accomplish, but I am confident we are up to the task. This study will involve

becoming acquainted with the demographics of our community - - roughly forming a 15 mile

radius around the church - - along with identifying the various aspects of the life of the congre-

gation, including our passions as well as areas in which we could stand some development.

We will look at our history, going back nearly 200 years in the life of this Presbyterian pres-

ence in the community of Warrenton, culminating in an examination of who we are presently,

and a discernment of what God is calling us to be and do now and in the future.

Rev. Webb indicated to us that the first item of business is to form a task force consisting of

approximately 9 persons, two of which should be ruling elders actively on Session. The two

ruling elders are Fred Gleason and myself. As Session continues to seek out those who are

being called to serve on this important task force, attention will be paid to ensuring that the

group will be representative of our demographics as a congregation. We are asking for your

prayers as we begin this search for task force participation.

DECENTLY AND IN ORDER (continued)

Participants in the task force should expect to work hard, as we will be given quite a bit of

work to do, and we will meet frequently. It is possible that the task force will meet as fre-

quently as weekly! Persons should be willing to meet in the evenings, as most of the partici-

pants will either be working adults or possibly students. To be sure, there will be retired

folks, like myself, and every effort will be made to identify persons representative of the

demographics of our church: gender, age, marital statuses, etc. Rev. Webb has defined her-

self as a task master, because this is important work that needs to be done as efficiently as can

be done effectively. We are “dart-boarding” a late April completion date, so we will be mov-

ing along, and must expect that participants will “do the homework” that is assigned at the

meetings. For those who might be reluctant to serve when called upon, please know that train-

ing will be provided. There is a saying that is certainly true for this process: “God doesn’t

call the qualified, He qualifies the called.”

We are asking at this point for the congregation to pray for us as we first identify those who

will be included on the task force. From time to time, these individuals will be asking for in-

formation from you. At all times, we will solicit your prayers and support.

One final thought in closing is that we promise to be as open as possible with respect to the

activities of this Task Force. Information will be provided by means of the weekly reminder

publications, this space in the news letter, and announcements or communiqués delivered in

worship services by members of the task force. 2014 promises to be a busy year in the life of

this congregation; let’s continue to celebrate who we are as we discern who God is calling us

to be, and what He is calling us to do! Let us continue to create, nurture and empower

Christ’s disciples in our time and in the future by fully participating in this very important

study.

May the peace of Christ be with you!

years & free for children under 2 years

tions for planning purposes. Forms will be available in the Narthex and church of-

fice soon.

Why pancakes? Pancakes are often associated with the Tuesday preceding Lent

(sometimes called Pancake Day), because making and eating them is a good way to

use up rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting season of

the 40 days of Lent.

Happy Valentine’s Day! 1 Corinthians 13:13

And now these three remain:

faith, hope and love.

But the greatest of these is

LOVE.
