VBS WRAP-UP: After all was decorated and dismantled, taught, sung, crafted, eaten, and played last week “In the Wild” at Vacation Bible School, a wonderful first-time classroom leader approached me and shared that they had always thought VBS just “happened,” and that they had an appreciation for the amount of planning, or-ganization, blood, sweat, and tears (my words)
goes into this church-wide ministry. VBS was supported churchwide this year, and the thank
you that is expressed here is larger than life -
you can expect that your contribution is eter-
nal!
Of the 255 registered children, an average of 200 children from 10 months of age through rising seventh grade attended each day. Eighty-five to 90 adult and youth volunteers served and disci-pled each day. The children raised over
$1400.00 to build clean water wells in Fort Liber-te, Haiti, as well as collected grocery carts-full of food for the Fauquier County Schools’ Food for Backpacks Program.
We have several children who are seeking an-swers to eternal questions on whom we will fol-low up. Our decorations are down, the clutter is being cleared away, but the work continues. Please pray for the hearts of our participants and their families and our Follow Up Team as they contact and visit families throughout the remain-der of the summer.
THANK YOU SO MUCH TO OUR VOLUN-TEERS AND STAFF FOR EVERYTHING; MOST ESPECIALLY, YOUR PRAYERS!!!
In Christ’s Service, Kristie Beals

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC Nancy Redding
[email protected] [email protected]
Summer is flying by and school will be starting before we know it. That
means Sunday night activities will begin soon and that includes Children’s
Choirs. I hope you will make plans to have your children involved in their
age-appropriate choir this Fall. A short description of each is below:
Cherub Choir is for ages 3-Kindergarten and meets Sundays from 5:00-5:30
p.m. in room 105. Jackie Cafferty and Jan Polk are the leaders. In this choir
your child will develop a love for
music, begin to listen and match pitches, learn about God and His Kingdom through
song, do creative activities with music and other fun things.
His Instruments of Praise is for grades 1-5 and meets Sundays from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in room
212. Nancy Redding is the leader. In this choir your child will continue to develop pitch matching
skills, learn about worship and the role music plays in worship, participate in Sunday services at cer-
tain times and in seasonal services, participate in musical dramas and do some creative crafts.
Be watching for times and dates for a Fall Musical Kickoff that will be taking place later this
month.
We are always looking for folk who are interested in joining the music department and/or sound/
media team of WBC. If you are an adult or youth and would like to sing in the choir or if you can
read music and are interested in playing handbells, please contact Nancy at nred-
[email protected] or 540.347.3509. If you are interested in participating in the
Crossroads Band or helping with sound or media, contact David Fatula at
[email protected] or 540.244.0087.
Worship is our theme for this year, and I encourage you to take every opportunity to worship private-
ly and corporately. That is where we meet God and share deep communion with Him. Oswald
Chambers put it this way, “I must take time to worship the One whose name I bear.” Do you bear
His name? Then worship is not an option. Ponder that . . .
It is a pleasure to worship with you,
Nancy

HomeReach Highlights
We will celebrate Ella Putnam’s
birthday on August 12, and Maxine
Shackelford’s birthday on August 17.
We are sure they will enjoy receiving
cards, phone calls, and visits from their
church family.
Our next HomeReach meeting will be
Tuesday, August 13, at 10:00 a.m., in
the Conference Room.
Please contact Teresa Hitt at 347-1701
if you would like to add someone to
HomeReach Ministry or would like to
become a mentor.
Where did the summer go? Preschoolers ended
their camp July 31. We say good luck to our 5-
year-olds moving into kindergarten but never
good-bye. We would love to have them next sum-
mer in our school-age program.
School-agers had a very busy summer of field
trips and entertainers. One of their favorites
was at Massanutten Water Park! Some of the
other favorite field trips were our ventures to
The Cookology, Medieval Times, Splashdown,
Riverside Dinner Theater, and many more.
Our traditional walks to the Carousel and park
visits truly makes us realize the simple activi-
ties of one’s childhood are often what make the
best memories.
It is truly a blessing to watch both our pre-
schoolers and school age children grow in their
love for the Lord and all He has created. We
were blessed to have Kristie Beals lead our
chapel program this summer.
Our new year will begin August 5. We have
limited positions in our preschool program and
welcome school-agers to our Before and After
School program serving Brumfield, Bradley, and
Fresta Valley. Reflecting back we are so blessed
to be a part of a wonderful staff that shares the
love of Christ, a WEE committee that has the
love of these children and their families, and our
church that recognizes our center as a ministry
of God.
In Christ,
Laurie Fetherolf & Stephanie Troup

Ministry Council Chuck Wilkers, Chairperson
The MC is working through
its long 2019 docket of ~30 ac-
tions/projects as we progress
through the summer and get
ready for our annual business
meeting on Sun, 17-Nov. I am
working with the Church Of-
fice to find a new way to com-
municate/post information
near the church office so that
you have more insight into
Ministry Council projects. We
will soon start our Calendar
Year 2020 budget build
which is a significant effort.
Our top priority remains call-
ing our new Sr. Pastor. The
Sr. Pastor Search Commit-
tee (SPSC). The SPSC con-
tinues to narrow down their
list of candidates to bring for-
ward to the Congregation.
They are turning their prima-
ry focus on finding another
interim preacher to serve fol-
lowing Bryan Jones depar-
ture in the August to Septem-
ber timeframe. We have sure-
ly been blessed with Bryan’s
service, but he needs to return
to his home church soon and
his primary duty as Associate
Executive Director of
Northstar Church Network.
A concurrent priori-ty remains constructing The Gathering Place at Alwington Farm. We continue to work toward formal closure of our long-term loan serviced by Oak View National Bank. The loan
amount is for $1.2M over a 25-year term at a rate of 4.65%. Our monthly payments will be $6773 per month. Our church lawyer, Gary Pearson, is handling the closure for us. Payments will be drawn from the Alwington Farm account funded by the Members in previous capital stewardship campaigns as well as the cur-rent Meet Me at The Tree cam-paign. At our annual meeting in November, we will present the long-term spend plan, and how we project our financial position will be long term. The MC is also looking to The Vir-ginia Baptist Extension Board (BEB) for the possibility of an additional loan to help us with, not only the build, but also critical maintenance needs at 123 Main Street. We will present this as well.
Work continues by our Gath-
ering Place builder – Domin-
ion Construction Group. We
encourage all Members to go
out and look at the progress.
Of course, don’t walk into the
construction zone; follow the
posted safety signs. Though
its early in the build, all looks
on track so far.
As reported last month, one
key item we are working on is
developing possible changes
to our Constitution, in light
of our culture, mission, core
values, and vision, to evalu-
ate: (1) adequacy of our cur-
rent Statement of Faith, (2)
alignment and value of our
corporate partnerships (i.e.,
NorthStar, BGAV, SBC, CBF,
and BWA), (3) criteria for
church membership, and (4)
improvements that clarify the
process for making motions at
business meetings. We appre-
ciate feedback from any mem-
ber on these items. The first
two are of particular im-
portance to us. We ask that
each member take the time to
become familiar with our
Statement of Faith and the
organizations listed above un-
der partnerships so that we
can have meaningful dialogue
in the days ahead and at the
annual business meeting. If
you are unfamiliar with these
items, please contact your
deacon or any member of the
MC for assistance.
As a reminder, your MC mem-
bers are: Marco Capa-
yachi, Cheryl
Carter (Corporate
Clerk), Kaity Grim-
ley, Karen Harris (Corporate
Secretary), Rebecca
Hayes, Karri Mize, Laurie
Schauss (Corporate Treasur-
er), Bill McGilvery, Phil
Peyton, and Chuck
Wilkers (MC Chair). Please
contact any MC member you
wish with a request. Also, as
your chairperson, please feel
free to contact me directly to
discuss any matter on your
heart.
In Christ, Chuck Wilkers,
MC Chairperson

My dear friends:
You have lifted my spirits and warmed my heart with your
beautiful cards, telephone calls, visits, and delicious food.
I am improving, but Bell’s Palsy is known to be a slow healing ailment.
It will be awhile before the face muscles get back in place.
I solicit your prayers for patience. Thank you for your concern and
caring.

Safety team update troy hayes
Safety in the Warrenton Baptist Church
The Warrenton Baptist Church (WBC) Safety
Committee (SC) was formed in 2018 to focus on
the current state of safety within the church and
what could be affordably done to improve it. The
members:
• Troy Hayes (Chair, retired engineer and
program manager with CIA)
• Ken Behnken (Property & Space)
• Walter Putnam (Retired Warrenton Police
Department 1st Sergeant)
• Trish Putnam (Nurse Practitioner)
• Nancy Redding (Representing the church
staff)
• Mark Jones (Lt Fauquier Sheriff’s Depart
ment)
Since its formation the SC has examined best
practices in the relatively new field of church
safety and thought about how these practices
could be brought to the WBC. The SC also re-
viewed the sheriff's report that accessed the se-
curity of WBC. The SC believes that the best
safety program would increase the church's pre-
paredness for everything from heart attacks to
fire drills to people disrupting the church.
Safety improvements to date to the Main Street
building:
• Upgraded exterior lighting .
• A drain has been installed in the 5th Street lot
to deal with snow melt.
• Grab bars have been placed in some toilet
stalls.
• An additional Automated External Defibrillator
(AED) for the first floor.
• A first aid kit beside the AED on the first and
second floors.
• New locks for each classroom in case of lock
down.
• A panel on each classroom door to block the
door window in case of lock down.
• Building entrances will be labeled like the
schools are to aid first responders.
• Protocols written for fire, suspicious persons,
youth programs, and sanctuary balcony.
• Training planned for the soon to be estab-
lished safety team.
• Review of the Gathering Place new building
to incorporate enhanced safety.
• A plan to install surveillance on current build-
ing (given a low priority in 2019 budget).
Training is being planned for a three-hour ses-
sion on September 15 from 12:30 – 3:30 for first
aid and fire evacuation, and a second three-hour
session on October 20 from 12:30 – 3:30 to
teach the skills required to recognize disruptive
people and the protocol to follow should that oc-
cur. This will allow the formation of the Safety
Team, a cadre of trained members that will pro-
vide a higher level of safety for the church.
I assure the church members that the Safety
Committee has worked the safety issue with
knowledge, experience, and dedication, all in an
effort to be prepared for whatever comes our
way. If you have thoughts or concerns, feel free
to talk with any SC member.

Going Paperless!
As part of a larger initiative of our church to “go paperless” this year, this will be the
last mailed edition of The Messenger. Going forward, Warrenton Baptist Church news
and announcements will be available through the weekly bulletins and Enouncements
(sign up for these on our website!). Special updates from the staff and church leader-
ship will be given on a regular basis via our new online WBC Blog which will be found
on the website and on Facebook starting in September. A short, periodic printed pub-
lication containing staff and leadership updates will be available to be mailed upon
special request for those who have no means of receiving electronic information. If
you fall into this category, please contact Delilah Sinclair in the church office.
Gathering Place Construction
Construction on the Gathering Place at Alwington Farm is on
schedule and moving according to plan! As of July 25, all of the
foundational walls have been poured for the new structure and much of the site work
has been completed. We expect construction to wrap up in early December with a
“Doors Open!” date in early January. Please continue to pray for the construction pro-
cess and for all of the future ministries that God has planned for this exciting new ex-
tension of Warrenton Baptist Church! Also pray for the hearts of those to whom we
will be ministering and discipling as a result of these ministries. God is good!

Did You Know? ...
The Apostle Paul writes: If anyone wants
to provide leadership in the church, good!
But there are preconditions: A leader must
be well-thought-of, committed to his wife,
cool and collected, accessible, and hospita-
ble. He must know what he’s talking about,
not be over fond of wine, not pushy but
gentle, not thin-skinned, not money hun-
gry. He must handle his own affairs well,
attentive to his own children and having
their respect. For if someone is unable to
handle his own affairs, how can he take
care of God’s church? (1 Timothy 3:2-5,
The Message)
“The Pulpit Committee was surely led by
God in 1956 to go to Crozet and find there
a man who fits Paul’s description of a lead-
er so well. Surely Lee Saunders was all that
this scripture describes. He and Mrs. Saun-
ders and the children became part of the
church family very soon and endeared
themselves to not only the church mem-
bers but to the entire community.” Excerpt
from History of Warrenton Baptist Church,
1849-1988 by Edna M. Stephenson.
We are blessed to have Rev. Saunders’
daughter (Rebecca Hayes) co-leading
(along with Jim Raines) our Sr. Pastor
Search Committee. Rebecca knows inti-
mately the process of what it truly means
to be “called” to the ministry. An interest-
ing fact Rebecca shared is that her father
was recommended to the Pulpit Committee
by Dick Winter – Long-time pastor of our
neighbor Warrenton Presbyterian Church.
They became friends while attending to-
gether Union Presbyterian Seminary in
Richmond. Rev. Saunders was led there af-
ter determining there was no housing for
married couples at his first choice – South-
ern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louis-
ville. God sometimes works in mysterious
ways for the glory of His kingdom.
