The new Ford F-150 earnedrecognition as the winner of thethird annual Altair EnlightenAward from Altair and the Centerfor Automotive Research (CAR)for the truck’s use of lightweightmaterials to minimize weight. The 2015 F-150 – with best-in-
class towing, payload and EPA-estimated gasoline fuel economyplus five-star top governmentcrash test ratings for every cabconfiguration – is being recog-nized for its total weight reduc-tion of up to 700 pounds, said Al-tair spokeswoman Jennifer Ko-rail.Ford’s entry, one of 17 nomina-
tions that competed for theaward, was selected as the win-ner for taking 700 pounds off ofthe Ford F-150 while improvingits performance, safety, and effi-ciency, said Korail. She said Ford engineers took a
holistic approach to weight re-duction by incorporating ad-vanced materials into the entiredesign of the vehicle, includingthe frame, body, powertrain, bat-tery and interior features suchas the seats. The weight savingshelp the truck tow more, haulmore, accelerate quicker andstop shorter, and it contributesto fuel efficiency.“As America’s truck leader,
Ford is honored to be named the2015 Altair Enlighten Award win-ner for the all-new Ford F-150,”said Raj Nair, group vice presi-dent, Global Product Develop-ment and chief technical officer,Ford Motor Company. “Thisaward is recognition of our out-standing team members, who set

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) –The car-swallowing hole hasbeen fixed but not forgotten atthe National Corvette Museum inKentucky. Yellow tape now marksthe boundaries of the cavity thatbecame a sensation and put themuseum on the map. And insteadof a gaping sinkhole drivingtourism, now it’s the vintagesports cars crunched by rocksand dirt.Work ended recently to fill in
the pit that consumed eightprized sports cars in early 2014.The repaired exhibit area has be-come a magnet for visitors, andthe dirt-caked remains of themangled cars are the stars.Where the 60-foot-long, 45-foot-
wide, 30-foot-deep sinkhole oncedrew gasps from visitors, now it’sthe remains of the worst-dam-aged cars that get astonishedlooks.“It’s just horrifying,’’ said
Corvette owner Doug Kidd, ofCanton, Ohio. “Nature’s a prettybig thing to deal with. They looklike they went through a torna-do.’’Seven of the eight cars are
back on display in about thesame spot where they plunged tofame. Five were too beaten up forrepairs. One is fixed, another willreturn Sept. 3 after being re-paired in Michigan and anotherwill be restored by the museum. The eight cars carried a total val-ue believed to exceed $1 million. The museum’s Facebook fol-
lowers now exceed 200,000, com-pared to about 50,000 before thesinkhole opened. On social me-dia, photos showcasing the dam-aged cars outpace those of theshiny, sleek models on display,
said museum spokeswomanKatie Frassinelli.“People just really enjoy hear-
ing the story and like seeing thedamage,’’ she said. “I guess it’sthe rubberneck effect. Thesecars definitely appeal to a wideraudience.’’In the gift shop, jars of sink-
hole dirt and rocks fetch $10apiece. Nearly 2,400 jars had soldthrough July. Wanda Cohenof Roswell, Georgia, had justposted a photo of a wrecked caron her Facebook page.“It’s like looking at the worst
wrecks you’ve ever seen,’’ shesaid.

approximately 3,200 employeeson three shifts.GM has announced more than

hicle would not be possible with-out the great people we havehere,” said UAW Local 602 Presi-dent Bill Reed. While most vehicles follow
somewhat of a bell curve forsales during their lifecycle, theEnclave has continued an up-ward trajectory after more thanseven years, Davis said.Minor dips in 2009 and 2012
reflected overall trends in the re-covering automotive industry, but record-setting 2014 salesrepresented a 39-percent in-crease over the Enclave’s firstfull year of production. As ofJune 2015, more than 500,000 En-clave models had been soldworldwide.“The Enclave led Buick’s prod-

For museum officials, the trickis to keep the site’s popularityfrom going in reverse now thatvisitors can’t gawk at the sink-hole. The museum cashed in onthe giant chasm with record at-tendance and revenue in 2014.
Last year, the museum just offthe interstate drew 251,258 visi-tors, easily topping the 150, 462visitors in 2013. The museum’sprior record attendance was200,900 in 1999. Through lastmonth, attendance for 2015 wasoff just 2.5 percent compared tothe first seven months of 2014,the museum said.
“We just want to try to do ourbest to make sure the decrease isas little as possible,’’ Museum ex-ecutive director Wendell Strodesaid.
Maintaining that momentumwill be challenging, said JasonSwanson, a University of Ken-
tucky assistant professor in hos-pitality management andtourism. Even if the sinkhole hadbeen left open, the publicity thathelped spark the attendancebump would have eventuallywaned, he said.
“The museum is better offsince more people now know ofthe museum because of the sink-hole’s publicity,’’ Swanson said.“However, 10 years down theroad, 2014 and 2015 will likely beseen as an anomaly.’’
The museum is doing its partto keep the sinkhole etched as acuriosity.
A temporary exhibit shows thenow-famous security camerafootage of the floor’s collapse
and cars toppling like toys intothe pit.
That footage has been viewedabout 8.5 million times onYouTube, the museum said. Thehole opened up when the muse-um was closed, and no one wasinjured.
There’s also video of the dam-aged Corvettes being pulled fromthe hole. Also featured are con-dolence cards to the museum. One card-sender wrote of being“devastated to hear of yourloss.’’
A new sinkhole-themed exhibitis scheduled to open this fall.
Kidd said he wished at leastpart of the sinkhole had gone un-plugged. It was an option dis-
cussed by museum leaders be-fore they opted to fill it in.
“It’s human nature to comeand see,’’ Kidd said.
Terry Jorgensen of Deland,
Florida, said it would have beenimpractical to keep the holeopen. Getting to see thecrunched cars was more thanenough, he said.

out to build the best truck everfor our customers.”High-strength, military-grade,
aluminum alloys were usedthroughout the F-150 for the firsttime, saving approximately 400pounds from the vehicle’s body,Nair said. Ford’s engineering, re-search and manufacturing teamsovercame the challenge of shift-ing from the traditional steelbody to the advanced aluminumproduction. This is a noteworthyexample of taking aluminum to ahigh volume application.Starting with the signature ful-
ly boxed frame, Ford engineersincreased the use of high-strength 70,000-psi steel – from23 percent to 77 percent of theframe – to improve stiffness anddurability while reducing weight,Nair said. The new frame is up to60 pounds lighter than the cur-rent frame. High-strength, alu-minum alloys, already used inaerospace, commercial trans-portation, energy and many oth-er rugged industries, are usedthroughout the F-150 body forthe first time, improving dentand ding resistance, and alsosaving weight.“We are excited to present
Ford with the 2015 Altair Enlight-en Award,” said Dave Mason,Vice President of Global Automo-tive at Altair. “The judges recog-nized Ford’s best-in-class innova-tion with the company’s ap-proach to weight reduction by in-corporating advanced materialsand design technologies for theF-150.”The Altair Enlighten Awards
highlight industry examples fo-
cused on minimizing the weightof products through innovativedesign techniques, materialstechnology and manufacturingprocesses, Korail said. It alsolooks at products that improveindustry best practices to re-spond to the challenges of massmanagement and meeting fueleconomy targets, and addressingincreasing vehicle safety require-ments.This year’s first runner-up, Ko-
rail said, is General Motors, whodeveloped and used innovativecomputer-aided engineering(CAE) methods to achieve a 163pounds weight reduction on theAlpha architecture of the 2012Cadillac ATS/CTS. Immersive lat-tice topology optimization, strategic structural bulkheadplacement, and multi-discipli-nary loadcase optimization, wereused, along with expert interpre-tation of the results, to lead thedesign of the architecture struc-ture.The Alpha architecture’s deliv-
ers mass efficiency, stiffness, safety, structural feel, and hasimproved fuel economy withoutdegrading on-road performancecharacteristics.Second runner-up was award-
ed to Faurecia together with Au-tomotive Performance Materials(APM). The NAFILean (NaturalFibers for Lean Injection Design)solution brought sustainable de-sign to instrument panels, centerconsoles and door panels of the2013 Peugeot 308 by integratinga natural, hemp-based fiber withpolypropylene, which allows forcomplex shapes and architec-tures along with a weight savingsof 20-25 percent.

SHANGHAI (AP) – Foreign com-panies have suspended opera-tions around the Tianjin port asofficials scramble to contain thetoxic fallout of the recent deadlychemical explosions.Toyota, which has operations
near the evacuation zone aroundthe blast, said it had suspendedthree production lines, which ac-count for over half of its Chinacapacity, through Aug. 19. Im-pacted models include theCrown, Reiz, Corolla, Vios andthe Corolla EX, largely for the do-mestic market.Panasonic, which has a prod-
uct development center 5 kilo-meters (3 miles) from the blastsite, kept its offices closed Aug.17, out of concern for employeesafety.Hong Kong-listed logistics
company Singamas ContainerHoldings, which has two depotsclose to the blast, told the stockexchange Monday that it hadsuspended operations at the siteand lost contact with one em-
ployee. The filing said the com-pany was still evaluating losses, but did not anticipate a materialimpact on business.U.S. farm equipment maker
Deere & Co. also reportedly sus-pended its Tianjin operations.Employees from the company’sBeijing office refused to com-ment Aug. 17.Automakers have been hit
hard because Tianjin is one ofChina’s major ports for car im-ports. Thousands of Volkswagen,Toyota, Hyundai and Renaultcars, most of them pricey im-ports, parked on lots near theblast were decimated.Volkswagen said it had lost
around 2,700 vehicles, includingNew Beetle, Golf and Tiguanmodels. Renault said 1,500Koleos SUVs were damaged.Hyundai said it had around 4,000vehicles, mostly high-end carslike Equus and Genesis, parkedat the site. The companies saidthey were still assessing the eco-nomic value of those losses.

As of Aug. 3, Cleveland-basedCrowne Group, LLC, has ac-quired Troy-based Vari-Form, amanufacturer of lightweight, hy-droformed structural parts forpickup trucks, SUVs and light ve-hicles.
Vari-Form has three manufac-turing locations in North Americawith a state-of-the-art technicalcenter in Strathroy, Ontario, Cana-da and a non-union workforce ofapproximately 400 employees, said Vari-Form spokesman TerryNardone.
Vari-Form is also expanding itsglobal footprint with new plantsunder joint venture relationshipsin Mexico and Italy scheduled tobegin operations this year.Terms of the transaction werenot disclosed, Nardone said.
Jim Maraz, Vari-Form chief fi-nancial officer, said, “We are ex-cited to begin working withCrowne, a known leading manu-facturer and distributor of com-ponent parts in the automotiveindustry, who has strong long-term relationships with many ofits top customers includingOEM’s and Tier I suppliers. Com-bining our industry knowledgeand building on our customer re-lationships will enable Vari-Formto maintain and further developits product offerings for our OEMand supplier partners.”
“Vari-Form represents an ex-cellent strategic fit for Crownewith its industry-leading hydro-forming technology and strongand expanding base of blue-chipcustomers, comprised of leadingOEM’s, Tier 1 suppliers and agrowing number of European andAsian car makers,” said StephenGraham, chief financial officer ofCrowne. “We are excited to con-tinue to expand our automotiveproduct offerings and technolo-
gies and look forward to workingwith Vari-Form to successfullyexecute our growth strategy.”
Nardone said that Vari-Formcurrently has production facili-ties in Strathroy, Ont., Canada;Reynosa, Mexico; Kunshan(Shanghai), China; and Canton,Miss. Vari-Form originated thepatented Pressure Sequence Hy-droforming (“PSH”) process forhigh volume tubular body struc-tural components and assem-blies. The PSH process uses rela-tively low water pressure (ascompared with traditional hydro-forming) to form a tube to theshape of a die cavity. This unri-valed technological expertiseand proprietary PSH processprovides substantial weight andcost savings.
There has been significant cap-ital investment in 20 hydroform-ing presses which produce over7 million parts annually, Nardonesaid. Crowne, headquarter inCleveland, is a leading manufac-turer and distributor of both Af-termarket and OEM componentparts for the automotive and oth-er industrial equipment markets.Crowne serves numerous leadingcustomers in both the Aftermar-ket and Original Equipment mar-kets including mass retail, dis-tributors, OEM and Tier I manu-facturers.
Nardone said Crowne has astrong reputation in the industryand offers a diverse portfolio ofproducts, including windshieldwiper blades and components;OEM wiper systems; fuel pumps, systems and accessories.
Since 2004, Crowne has com-pleted and integrated ten acqui-sitions. Crowne currently em-ploys approximately 4,000 peo-ple and operates ten manufactur-ing facilities in North America.

In partner-ship with Detroit’s Student Con-servation Association, JohnsonControls is sponsoring the sum-mer jobs program for the eighthyear.Volunteers from the compa-

Activitiesincluded planting, developingand maintaining trails, and re-moving invasive plant species. The CLC, Dodero said, provides
54 Detroit high school studentswith professional development, leadership skills and environ-mental conservation experience, while completing fundamentalprojects at the city’s Rouge Parkand Eliza Howell Park.“Johnson Controls is proud to
sponsor this valuable program,’”said Byron Foster, vice presidentand general manager, CompleteSeat and Strategy for JohnsonControls’ Automotive Seating di-vision. “Students benefit greatly intwo ways: by gaining hands-onwork experience and in further de-veloping their leadership skills, which is a main goal of the pro-gram.”“Our employees truly enjoy
having the opportunity to meetthese enthusiastic students andwork with them to make a posi-tive impact on the city,” saidCamille Chism, manager, John-son Controls Automotive Seat-ing, who is leading this year’sCLC employee participation. In addition to the cleanup
work, on August 13, the students
participated in a professional de-velopment day hosted by John-son Controls at the company’soffice in Plymouth, Dodero said. They attended sessions aboutcorporate culture, teamwork andcareer development includingethics, diversity and engineering. The CLC is a six-week program
where students work with crewleaders on a variety of projectsthroughout Detroit, including out-door classroom construction, newtrail development, green spaceacreage expansion, planting of na-tive trees, grasses and flowers, in-vasive plant species removal andgeneral operations management.Students also cultivate vital pro-fessional development skills, in-cluding help with resume writingand interview skills.

Range anxiety – the fear thatyour EV will run out of poweraway from a charging station – ismajor issue with potential buyers. So the 2016 Volt is engineered
to offer customers more of whatthey want: range, range andmore range, said GM spokes-woman Michelle Malcho. The General Motors Volt’s all-
new second-generation Voltec ex-tended-range electric propulsionsystem delivers 53 miles of pureEV range, based on EPA testing. That is nearly a 40-percent im-provement over the first-genera-tion Volt.Chevrolet expects many next-
generation Volt owners will usepower solely from their batteriesfor more than 90 percent of trips,Malcho said. Currently, Volt own-ers use battery power on 80 per-cent of their trips. This means the average Volt
owner could expect to travel wellover 1,000 miles between gas fillups, if they charge regularly. For the first 53 miles, the Volt
can drive gas and tailpipe-emis-sions free using a full charge ofelectricity stored in its new 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery, rated ata combined 106 MPGe, or MilesPer Gasoline equivalent, Malchosaid. When the Volt’s battery runs
low, a gas-powered generatorseamlessly operates to extendthe driving range for a total of420 miles on a full tank.“We listened to our cus-
tomers,” said Andrew Farah, ve-hicle chief engineer, “They werevery clear when they told us thatthey wanted more range, and afun driving experience behindthe wheel. We are confident thatthe 2016 Volt delivers both.”
