On April 30, GM helped repay that faith to the tune of $5.4 billion in new investments over three years in various GM sites around the country. Alan Batey, GM North Ameri- can president, made the an- nouncement at the company’s Pontiac Metal Center site, where he said that as part of the first phase of the process the facility will receive $124 million in in- vestments. Two other facilities in Michi- gan will receive additional invest- ments as well, Batey said. GM’s Lansing Delta Township site will receive $520 million for tooling and equipment, and the Warren Pre-Productions Operations site will get $139.5 million for a new body shop and stamping facility upgrades. Child safety in terms of auto-motive design is no joke.

But how do GM engineers de-termine what seats fit and where, especially with hundreds of mod-els on the market?

A Kinect motion sensor, origi-nally developed for the Xbox 360,is helping solve that challenge, and the new Chevrolet Traverse isa vehicle that used this technolo-gy.

With ample space and ad-justable second row seats, theChevrolet Traverse offers par-ents flexibility when it comes tofitting child safety seats, said GMspokeswoman Rebecca White.

“There are over 250 differentmakes and models of child safetyseats on the market, and new orrevised models are introducedevery year,” said Julie Kleinert,GM’s Global Child Safety techni-cal lead, “and the lack of an in-dustry standard for the size andshape of child seats makes itquite challenging for vehicle en-gineers.”

Through the Center for ChildInjury Prevention Studies(CChIPS), a National ScienceFoundation-funded industry/uni-versity research cooperativewith partner research sites atThe Children’s Hospital ofPhiladelphia (CHOP) and TheOhio State University, Kleinertand engineers from other vehicleand child seat manufacturers areworking to develop new tools to

help manufacturers evaluatechild seat compatibility, Whitesaid.

The Kinect for Windows sen-sor first launched for the Xboxgaming console before beingmade available to Windows de-vices, White said.

The same technology createdto capture player movementsand enable voice control of videogames doubles as a powerfulscanning tool in the automotiveindustry.

The project, led by CHOP’s Dr.Aditya Belwadi, developed amethodology to use the Kinectcontroller to digitize the shape ofa child seat in minutes and at afraction of what it would cost touse a standard industrial scan-ner, White said.

CHOP researchers created“surrogate” child seat shapes byoverlaying the individual childseat scans produced by theKinect on top of one another.

The surrogate represents themaximum amount of space need-ed for a particular category ofchild seat, Kleinert said. Virtualevaluations of the surrogate mayprove to be a simple way for ve-hicle manufacturers to assess alarge range of child seats with asingle tool.

“This new tool will be a greathelp to us in evaluating child re-straint compatibility early in ourvehicle design process,” saidKleinert.

The team, Kleinert said, hopesthis approach, which was pre-sented as a technical paper atthe 2015 SAE World Congress inDetroit last month, may influenceother vehicle and child seat man-ufacturers to adopt a commonstandard for the size and geome-try of different categories ofchild seats.

“We haven’t reached that point

yet,” said Kleinert, “but we be-lieve this project is an importanta step in that direction.

This project is just one exam-ple of how vehicle manufactur-ers, child seat manufacturers anduniversity researchers are work-ing together, Kleinert said, through CChIPS on research toimprove the safety of children invehicles.”

The new Ford F-150 SuperCrewhas earned the government’s high-est possible crash safety rating.

This adds to the F-150’sstrengths as the toughest, smartest, most capable F-150ever, said Ford spokesman MikeLevine.

Thanks to 31 new safety-relat-ed innovations developed by theFord truck team, the 2015 F-150SuperCrew has earned a five-starOverall Vehicle Score in the Na-tional Highway Traffic Safety Ad-ministration’s New Car Assess-ment Program.

“The five-star safety rating is aterrific example of One Ford col-laboration and innovation,” saidRaj Nair, Ford group vice presi-dent, Global Product Develop-ment. “Our truck team workedtogether for years to deliver thisaccomplishment, using an un-precedented combination of ad-vanced materials throughout theall-new F-150.

“The 2015 model is engineeredto be the safest F-150 ever, whichmatters to customers who de-pend on this truck to not onlyget the job done, but also getthem safely home.”

F-150’s improved performance isenabled by up to a 700-poundweight savings through the use ofhigh-strength steel in the frame;high-strength, military-grade, alu-minum alloy in the body; andsmart engineering, Nair said.

A cross-functional group com-prised of Ford truck product de-velopment veterans and re-searchers worked to preciselyoptimize vehicle weight savingsand manufacturing design to de-liver improved durability, capa-bility, fuel economy and crash-worthiness, Nair said.

The team created and patent-ed new structures, materials andjoining methods that were testedvirtually with supercomputersimulations, then retested inFord’s advanced laboratories toengineer the safest F-150 ever.

The F-150 team started engi-neering the truck with super-computers before the first unitswere ever even crash-tested in alab.

Engineers developed digitalsafety models with nearly 1.4million separate elements to ex-

amine how even the smallestparts of the truck would performin a crash situation, Nair said.

Safety starts with the truck’ssignature, fully boxed frame –the backbone of the all-new F-150, Nair said. Engineers addedan extra crossmember and in-creased the use of high-strengthsteel to improve stiffness, dura-bility and safety – while helpingreduce the frame’s weight by upto 60 pounds.

“The team had to invent newways to manage crash energy, because advanced materials likehigh-strength steel behave differ-ently,” said Matt Niesluchowski,Ford truck safety manager. “Wefound that changing certainshapes led to a weight reduction, while also improving crash per-formance.”

Safety engineers developed apatented 12-corner front crushhorn to dissipate more energy ina front impact, Nair said. Theuniquely shaped structure helpsmanage crash forces so theframe buckles predictably tokeep those forces away from oc-cupants in the cabin. This is justone of the 31 new safety-relatedinnovations the team developedto make the truck safer in theevent of a crash.

Ford’s advanced research andsafety teams worked together toengineer F-150’s high-strength,military-grade, aluminum-alloybody structure to manage whathappens to the body in the eventof a crash, Nair said.

The truck’s cab features hy-droformed roof rails that consti-tute a cage-like structure aroundthe doors, extruded roof bows toprovide lateral strength acrossthe top of the cab, and extrudedrocker rails near the bottom toreinforce lower body strength.

How various parts of the truckwere joined also yielded safetyimprovements. In many cases, welding was not the most effec-tive way to join parts, so theteam developed and patentedmethods to connect parts usinghigh-strength adhesives. This re-sulted in structural strengthequal to or greater than tradi-tional welds.

New to F-150 is an advancedrestraint system that includes anadaptive steering column thatadjusts energy managementdepending on occupant size andsafety belt usage, Nair said. Thesystem includes dual-stageairbags and side-curtain airbags.

The all-new F-150 offers thefollowing safety features:

• Safety belt pretensionersadded to the belt anchor sidethat further tighten the lap beltaround front seat occupants, keeping them in a more securespot early in the event of acrash. • Curve Control,a technology that will slow thevehicle when it senses the truckis going too fast for a particularcurve.

• Available inflatable rearsafety belts for SuperCrew – asegment-first feature.

Ford F-150 Loses Weight, Keeps Strength

The 2015 F-150’s frame contributes to its excellent safety rating.

The new Ford Explorer Plat-inum features an exclusive Sonyaudio system with two industry-first technologies – LiveAcoustics and Clear Phase.

As a standard feature for thenew Ford Explorer Platinum edi-tion, which goes on sale thissummer, this marks the first timehigh-end Sony home audio tech-nology has been used in a vehi-cle. Live Acoustics and ClearPhase technologies bring realis-tic concert-quality sound to thenew Explorer, said Fordspokesman Mark Schirmer.

“Explorer is about pushingboundaries,” says Matt Zuehlk,Ford Explorer brand manager,“and authentic high-end hometheater sound isn’t just for theliving room anymore. The newPlatinum series gives customerseverything – including a soundsystem that will knock yoursocks off.”

Explorer has reigned as Ameri-ca’s top-selling midsize SUV for25 consecutive years – marking aquarter century for the vehicleas a leader both in the segmentand in its technology offerings,Schirmer said.

To develop the proprietaryLive Acoustics algorithm, Sonyengineers, led by Giro Shiraishi, also a concertmaster at the SonyPhilharmonic Orchestra, visitedgreat halls in Amsterdam, Berlinand Vienna, and installed micro-phones to measure their preciseacoustic qualities, Schirmer said.Shiraishi, who began taking vio-lin lessons at age four and hasbeen passionate about soundever since, wanted to re-createthe concert hall experience forSony’s high-end home audioproducts.

“This technology was previ-ously available only in our high-end home audio systems – we’venow applied the algorithm ofLive Acoustics to Ford ExplorerPlatinum’s audio system to trans-form the listening experience tobe among the finest in theworld,” says Shiraishi.

Sony engineers spent morethan 100 hours tuning the audiosystem in the new Explorer with

one goal in mind – to providePlatinum driver and passengerswith the finest audio experienceon the road, Schirmer said.

At the core of the system are12 high-power speakers in 10carefully selected locations –plus an all-new Class D amplifierto deliver a lossless powersource that drives speaker out-put without straining.

Combined, the 12 speakers arecapable of a maximum 500 watts. The speakers are optimized forsensitivity – including the centerand surround speakers, a sub-woofer with an 8-inch enclosurefor tight and full base tones, anddoor woofers and chrome tweet-ers with translucent grilles topreserve sound integrity andcomplement the upscale Plat-inum interior.

Even the system’s speakercoils are unique – square coils in-stead of the more traditionalround ones – resulting in greaterefficiency and heat dispersion.

When music is recorded, is live orin a studio, the best sound engi-neers always take care to establisha full sound stage. In other words, they make sure each instrument oc-cupies specific areas in the “space”in front of the listener.

In the context of a vehicle, imag-ine occupants are listening to alive concert with instrumentsstrategically placed in distinctiveand acoustically correct “zones”on the vehicle’s dashboard.

Ford Explorer is built at ChicagoAssembly Plant, as well as inVenezuela and Russia. It is sold inmore than 100 markets across theglobe.

Ford expects to export 56,000Explorers from the United Statesthis year alone, Schirmer said.

DETROIT (AP) – General Mo-tors CEO Mary Barra is dismiss-ing any talk of a possible mergerwith Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

Barra tells analysts on a con-ference call that the company isfocused on making its businessmore efficient and taking full ad-vantage of its global size. Shesays GM won’t consider any-thing that would distract fromthose efforts.

Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Mar-chionne recently floated the ideaof merging with GM or anotherglobal automaker. He is a propo-nent of industry consolidationand says only the biggest au-tomakers will survive.

Barra says other automakersmight want to consolidate, butGM is focused on its plan. Thatincludes leading the industry innew mobility technologies.

our investments is the focus onproduct improvements that ben-efit customers,” Clegg said. “To-gether, with our UAW partners,we’re working hard to exceedconsumers’ ever-increasing qual-ity expectations.”Clegg said that all major body

panel dies are pre-tested at thePontiac facility under regularproduction conditions, enablingstamping plants to produce qual-ity parts in a shorter time span. The Warren Pre-Production fa-

cility, Clegg said, is one of fivethat GM has around the world. Itis where GM develops the mostefficient manufacturing proto-cols for building its various vehi-cles. Once these protocols havebeen tested and proven, thenpeople from the particular plantin question come, learn the tech-niques and take them back totheir home site.Basically, Clegg said, Warren

Pre-Production finds problemsbefore they become problems.Lansing Delta is where GM as-

sembles the Chevrolet Traverse, the GMC Acadia and the BuickEnclave.Clegg said the order in which

GM picks sites for investment isbased on the company’s needsas it launches new products.“The prep work on the three

Michigan facilities has alreadystarted,” Clegg said. “The work

won’t be completed on late nextyear. No sites will be closed dur-ing the process. We’ll run at fulloperation.”Batey said that in the past GM

didn’t make such investmentsduring bad economic times.“It’s no secret that the auto

business is cyclical,” Batey said.“It’s important to have a balancesheet that allows a company toinvest. Having a ‘fortress’ bal-ance sheet means that a compa-ny like GM can invest in productduring both good and bad times. We want our development to beon time. In the past we delayedinvesting in sites and in newproduct to save money duringdown cycles. Fortunately, we arein a position where we have thecash to invest during lean times.”

Finding skilled digital sculp-tors with clay modeling experi-ence has become a challenge forautomakers, auto suppliers andother employers because few de-sign programs teach these skills. To help meet the demand, Ma-comb Community College hascreated a new digital sculptor as-sociate degree program will belaunched in August. It will be the

only two-year degree program insoutheast Michigan to includeclay modeling in addition to digi-tal design and milling, said MCCspokesman James Melton. The program was designed

with industry input to ensuregraduates possess the knowl-edge and skills required for en-try-level positions in industrialdesign studios. Those who are

DETROIT (AP) – Ally Financial, the former lending arm of Gener-al Motors, said its quarterly prof-it more than doubled, thanksmainly its sale of a stake in an au-to-loan company in China. The results beat Wall Street’s

expectations, and drove thelender’s stock up 49 cents, or 2percent, to $20.80 in early trad-ing April 27.The Detroit-based lender re-

Five-time Brickyard 400 win-ner and four-time NASCAR SprintCup champion Jeff Gordon willdrive a Corvette Z06 pace car forthe 99th running of the Indi-anapolis 500 mile race, May 24 atthe Indianapolis Motor Speed-way, said GM spokesman RandyFox.It is the 13th time a Corvette

has served as the official pacecar, Fox said, dating to 1978, andthe 26th time a Chevrolet has ledthe pack for “The Greatest Spec-tacle in Racing.” Corvette hasserved as pace car more thanany other vehicle in the race’shistory.Gordon, who grew up in near-

by Pittsboro, Ind., is no strangerto the Indianapolis Motor Speed-way. In 1994 he won the inaugu-ral Brickyard 400 – the first-everNASCAR race at the Brickyard, and has visited the winner’s cir-cle there four more times. Thatmakes him one of only two five-time winners at Indy in any se-ries. Michael Schumacher wonfive Formula One races there.“It’s great to have Jeff Gordon

serve as this year’s pace cardriver,” said Jim Campbell,Chevrolet U.S. vice president ofperformance vehicles and mo-torsports. “He is a true champi-on who has earned the respectand admiration of competitorsand race fans alike. It will bevery special to have Jeff lead theIndy 500 field to the green flag, behind the wheel of the mostpowerful and capable produc-tion car ever from Chevrolet – ona day he’ll also be competing inthe Coca Cola 600 NASCAR raceat Charlotte Motor Speedway.”“Indy is hallowed ground for

racers like me and I couldn’t bemore thrilled to drive theCorvette Z06 pace car aroundthe track that helped drive mysuccess over the years,” Gordonsaid.

all-new rear wheel electric vari-able transmission (EVT) with ex-clusively designed motors toprovide smooth, spirited acceler-ation.

The two-motor EVT also usesthree planetary gears and is mat-ed to a 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder en-gine with spark-ignited direct in-jection and variable valve tech-nology. The use of a two-motorsystem provides smooth andseamless power through the en-tire driving range. The combinedsystem is capable of producingtotal system power of 335 hp and432 lb-ft of torque.

“The CT6 PHEV will deliver ex-ceptional smooth, responsive ac-celeration that Cadillac and luxu-ry sedan owners demand,” saidTravis Hester, Cadillac CT6 exec-utive chief engineer. “We havemanaged to achieve superiordrive quality when compared toour PHEV competitors due to ourexclusively designed EVT.”

Cadillac expects the fuel econ-omy of the CT6 PHEV to be morethan double that of the car’s con-ventional engine offerings,Nordlicht said, as measured bymiles per gallon equivalent. Stan-dards for measuring vehicle fueleconomy differ between Chinaand other global regions. Full de-tails on the CT6 PHEV efficiencyin the U.S. and other marketsoutside China will be releasedcloser to the car’s introductionin those markets.

The CT6 PHEV will featureiBooster and Electronic StabilityProgram tailored for hybrid elec-tric vehicle regenerative blendedbraking to provide maximum en-ergy recovery combined with re-duced stopping distance and im-proved fuel economy over tradi-

tional regenerative braking sys-tems.

The iBooster and ESP-hevtechnology balance the use ofthe CT6 electric motors to act asgenerators to slow the vehicleand capture as much kinetic en-ergy as possible during low-de-mand scenarios, Nordlicht said, while blending the traditional hy-draulic brakes with the motors inhigh-demand scenarios.

As expected from a driver’s carlike the CT6, the system providesimproved brake pedal feel andenables increased opportunityfor engine stop-start operation.

CT6 PHEV drivers will be ableto select among three distinctoperating modes: Normal, Sportand Hold.

• Normal: Designed for every-day commuting. Provides idealbalance of comfort, performanceand maximized EV range and fueleconomy.

• Sport: Provides more ag-gressive pedal mapping for im-proved off-the-line feel and astiffer steering response.

• Hold: Allows owners to se-lect when the CT6 PHEV uses itsengine, reserving the remainingbattery charge for later use. Thisfeature helps enhance efficiencybecause owners who mix cityand highway driving can save thebattery charge for city travel.

• The CT6 PHEV will have Re-gen on Demand. This allows thedriver to temporarily regenerateenergy from vehicle momentuminto electricity and store in thebattery pack for later use.

Regen on Demand supports amore-engaging driving experi-ence by slowing the vehiclewhen entering a turn to betterposition it on the exit, Nordlichtsaid, much like downshiftingwith a manual transmission.
