Papering our rooms is still a rather nonsensitive
business. We ignore the architectural preconditions.
Windows, doors and switches tear holes in patterns
that actualy ask for a continuity of unbroken surface.
Later on, pictures and cupboards are dashed on top
of it. So three layers compose the visual appearance of
walls – without reacting on each other.
Our conception blurs the border between architectural
wallstructure and applied interior decoration. Th e
wallpaper is becoming a senstitive mediator. Contrary
to traditional mural painting, we do not create
individual objects of art but generate functions that
are adapted to the particular infrastructure of a room.
Once the necessary data of the object is stored
we can apply any pattern. Th e outcomes are
wallpaper-templates that warp around every hole
or discontinuance. Door, light switch, painting and
wallpaper don’t bang together anymore, they fl ow into
each other and create a unity – by crossing our usual
perception of rooms, a rather bizarre one.
Starting point is the technical plan of the walls we
want to work on, including the position of all doors,
hangings and outlets that should be part of the intended
distortions.
Next, we apply a grid to the wall and defi ne all parts
that are supposed to behave like force-fi elds on the
wallpaper patterns.
Depending on shape, size and position of our
infl uencing wall elements our program generates exact
warping functions.
Now we can choose any available pattern or create a
new one.
Our room based warping function is applied to the
chosen pattern and calculates the fi nal image in 1 : 1
scale and 300 dpi resolution.
Th e outcome is a picture in wall size that can be straight
away printed on stripes.
Process visualisation of a bordure.
Th e generated images are printed by our partners in
high resolution (190 dpi) on professional wallpaper
stripes made of fl eece that can be papered as usual.
It is delivered to our clients in rolls of 46,5cm width.
Th e material is steam-permeable and fl ame resistant
according to European Norm B.
Th e fi nal costs are based on the size of the walls and the
time needed to generate the distortions.
See our example calculation for a detailed breakdown
of the costs involved:
Wallpaper 12 m², 4 distortions, Pattern 3
1. Printing costs and license fee Pattern3 35,00€ 12 420,00€
(calculated per square-meter,
between 30 -36€ / m² depending on chosen pattern)
2. Working-time for 4 Distortions 55,00€ 6 330,00€

in this example for door, picture, switch and outlet)

Process and pattern visualisations
We are right now working on a pattern library and are looking forward to present it to you within the next weeks.
For now, see a few of our available patterns that we used already. Our technique is able to use any possible templates.
So you are welcome to send in your own patterns.
