ESSAY TEST TODAY3 PARAGRAPHS MINIMUM ABOUT “THE FLAWS

• Explain the example in at least 2 sentences.

• Last sentence in paragraph should relate back to the first. Explain how your example relates to the flaw and the trouble it causes.

Page 33: Warm Ups - 7th Grade

SAMPLE

Suspicion is a major flaw in human nature which can lead to trouble between neighbors. People tend to blame others when things go wrong in their lives. For example, in “Monsters are Due on Maple Street” when Les Goodman’s car mysteriously starts, the crowd watching becomes “illogically, wildly frightened.” They starts assuming that Les Goodman is connected to the aliens they think are responsible for the power failure. People stop thinking and start blaming. They look for a scapegoat for all of their troubles and accuse Les without any evidence. They pick out his difference and label him an oddball. They threaten him and his family. Suspicion makes them the monsters that the author warns us about.

• OPTION 1- Creative Writing• Write an illustrated short story of 3 pages, complete with spell check, proper grammar, dialogue

and descriptive detail. Remember to use the senses to tell the reader about the planet and life on it in detail. What is the environment like? Life and activities? Weather? Plants and animals? Jobs?

• OPTION 2 – Art • Create a 2D (on paper) or 3D (a model) visual of the life on the planet you choose. I have seen this

done as a graphic novel or a picture album with small captions to explain what is going on in each illustration. You need a minimum of 6 illustrations (your own, not printed) and they need to be ALL colored – no white space. For 3D, you can use Legos or dolls or other existing materials.

• OPTION 3 – Video• Make a short film that can be emailed to me and shown to the class. Remember to have a set that

shows off the environment of the planet as well as costumes. Your film should be 10 minutes long and show life on the planet you choose – school, work, animals, plants, weather.

• OPTION 4 – Research Project• Research any planet of your choice and present a poster board or PowerPoint of your findings.

What is the climate, atmosphere, life. After, imagine what people would have to do in order to inhabit this planet – describe what would life look like when the planet gets colonized.

READ THE POEM AND WRITE A REACTION. WHAT IS IT ABOUT? WHAT KIND OF AN ENVIRONMENT? DESCRIBE. DOES THIS CHANGE YOUR CONCEPT

OF THE WORD “GHETTO”?

FEAR

TODAY THE GHETTO KNOWS A DIFFERENT FEAR,

CLOSE IN ITS GRIP, DEATH WIELDS AN ICY SCYTHE.

AN EVIL SICKNESS SPREADS TERROR IN ITS WAKE,

THE VICTIMS OF ITS SHADOW WEEP AND WRITHE.

TODAY A FATHER’S HEARTBEAT TELLS HIS FRIGHT

AND MOTHERS BEND THEIR HEADS IN THEIR HANDS.

NOW CHILDREN CHOKE AND DIE WITH TYPHUS HERE,

A BITTER TAX IS TAKEN FROM THEIR BANDS.

MY HEART STILL BEATS INSIDE MY BREAST

WHILE FRIENDS DEPART FOR OTHER WORLDS.

PERHAPS ITS BETTER – WHO CAN SAY? –

THAN WATCHING THIS, TO DIE TODAY?

NO, NO MY GOD, WE WANT TO LIVE!

NOT WATCH OUR NUMBERS MELT AWAY.

WE WANT TO HAVE A BETTER WORLD,

WE WANT TO WORK – WE MUST NOT DIE!

NOVEL. THE TOPICS THAT OFTEN SHOW UP IN ANNE’S DIARY ARE:

RELATIONSHIPS AND CONFLICT AND MISUNDERSTANDINGS

• SELECT 2 TOPICS. FIND AN EXAMPLE IN ANNE’S DIARY THAT SHOWS THAT THEME OR CONCERN. BE DETAILED AND SPECIFIC. DESCRIBE WHAT HAPPENS AS YOUR SUPPORT OF THE THEME. YOU MAY USE MY THEME OF MISUNDERSTANDING AS LONG AS YOU USE A DIFFERENT EXAMPLE.

• EXAMPLE (DO NOT COPY): “ANNE FRANK’S DIARY IS FILLED WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF MOMENTS WHEN HER PERSONALITY CLASHES WITH THE OTHERS IN HIDING. AS THE YOUNGEST IN THE GROUP, ANNE FEELS THAT SHE IS TREATED UNFAIRLY, OFTEN MISUNDERSTOOD AND JUDGED. DURING A PARTICULARLY NASTY CONFLICT WITH DUSSEL, ANNE DEMANDS THE USE OF THE DESK IN THEIR SHARED ROOM TWICE A WEEK FOR TWO HOURS. SHE BELIEVES THAT SHE SHOULD BE AT LEAST ENTITLED TO THAT MUCH, SINCE HE USES IT THE REST OF THE DAY. DUSSEL INSULTS ANNE, TELLING HER THAT HER WORK IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN HIS, CALLING HER SELFISH. IN FACT, SINCE HE WAS LAST TO ARRIVE, HE SHOULD BE GRATEFUL TO HAVE SPACE AT ALL. IF THINGS WERE FAIR, ANNE WOULD HAVE THE DESK IN THE MORNINGS AND DUSSEL IN THE EVENINGS. IT IS REALLY DUSSEL WHO IS HYPOCRITICALLY SELFISH.”

Warm Up – 5/18/2015 Write a paragraph discussing your thoughts and feelings

on “The Book Thief”

Use some of the notes that you took to support your opinions.

Make sure you explain your thoughts in full sentences and by giving specific examples. For instance, “I believe The Book Thief is an interesting

movie since it shows the German perspective of World War II. We see that it wasn’t just the Jews that suffered during this time, but the poor Germans as well. Liesel and her family have to cut down on the amount of food they eat when they take in Max. They go from eating 3 meals a day to 2.”

Page 131: Warm Ups - 7th Grade

Warm Up – 5/19/2015 Explain in your own words (in at least a paragraph or

two) what the value of watching “The Book Thief” was. Why do you think I showed you this movie in addition to reading Anne Frank.

Remember to use specific examples from the film to prove what you learned.

Also, what similarities are there between “The Book Thief” and Anne Frank’s diary. Example: Anne Frank, when she matures, starts to see both sides of each argument and is no longer prejudiced. “The Book Thief” shows the German side of World War II and teaches us that there were good Germans who helped the Jews.
