What is a Mineral?
SolidCannot be a liquid or a gas
Naturally OccurringFound in nature, not man-made
InorganicIs not alive and never was, non-living (a few exceptions which we
don’t need to concern ourselves with in 6th grade)Fixed composition
Has a chemical formula, most are formed from compounds of two or more elements, some minerals consist of one element ex. Au
Crystal FormA definite structure in which atoms are arranged
What is a mineral? Properties:
A mineral is a naturally formed, inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure.

Is it non-living material? Is it a solid? Is it formed in nature?Does it have a crystalline structure?
Questions to ask yourself when determining if an item is a mineral or not:
The next few slides show an assortment of items.
As a group, categorize the items as either:Minerals or Non-Minerals.
Wood
Wood comes from a tree which is living. It is not a mineral. It also does not have a crystal structure.
Gold
Gold is a
mineral.
Fossil
Fossils were once living. They are not minerals.
Topaz
Mineral
Bones
Bones are living because they are in
living things. They are not a mineral.
Icebergs
Water is not a mineral. It is not a solid. Icebergs are solid. They are a mineral! They form in nature and
have a crystal structure.
Diamond
Mineral
Minerals form as hot magma cools inside the crust or lava hardens on the surface. When magma cools, it is a solid and crystals form.
Intro. to rocks and minerals
RocksMinerals are the building blocks of
rocks
What is a rock? Properties:
• Solid• Formed in nature
Rocks are generally 2 or more types of minerals. Rock made of minerals
A geologist is a scientist that studies rocks and minerals.
