First Attempt at Annexation

This was just an attempt at annexation.

The controversy over slavery kept Texas from being admitted to the U.S.

Financial WoesThe biggest problem in the Republic was

lack of money. The Republic started out with million dollars

of debt due to the Revolution.Star Money was created as promissory

notes. The government could use up to $600,000 worth of promissory notes on goods and services.

Houston’s Native Texan PolicyThe Texas congress didn’t want to make

good on the treaty that Houston had made with the natives during the revolution. The land that was promised to the natives was good farm land that the Anglo Americans wanted.

The natives acted out due to frustration with all the Anglo Americans moving onto their land. They began raiding parties.

Houston brought in the Texas Rangers to help keep the peace between the natives and settlers.
