ADDING FRACTIONS WITH POSITIVE/NEGATIVES
1. Convert any mixed numbers to improper fractions.
2. Find the Lowest Common Denominator (LCD) .
3. Look at the signs. If the signs are the:
Same – ADD the absolute value of both numbers and keep sign of both numbers. (SAME SIGN ADD.)
Different – SUBTRACT the absolute value of both numbers and keep sign of LARGER absolute value number. (DIFFERENT SIGN SUBTRACT.)
4. Simplify!
SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS WITH POSITIVE/NEGATIVES
1. Convert any mixed numbers to improper fractions.
2. Find the Lowest Common Denominator (LCD).
3. Change subtraction sign to addition and second number to it’s opposite.

EXAMPLE #1
Step 1: Convert mixed number to improper fractions.
Step 2: Find LCD (Lowest Common Denominator).
Step 3: Change subtraction to addition AND second number to it’s opposite. (Subtracting is the same as adding it’s opposite!)
Step 4: Look at the signs. SAME SIGN ADD (keep both signs) DIFFERENT SIGN SUBTRACT (keep sign of larger number)
Step 5: Simplify!

ADDING DECIMALS WITH POSITIVE/NEGATIVES
1. Look at the signs, if they are:
Same – ADD the absolute value of both numbers and keep sign of both numbers. (SAME SIGN ADD.) Different – SUBTRACT the absolute value of both numbers and keep sign of LARGER absolute value number. (DIFFERENT SIGN SUBTRACT.)2. Line up the decimals and numbers according to their place value.
SUBTRACTION DECIMALS WITH POSITIVE/NEGATIVE
1. Change subtraction sign to addition and second number to it’s opposite.2. Look at the signs, if they are:
Same – ADD the absolute value of both numbers and keep sign of both numbers. (SAME SIGN ADD.) Different – SUBTRACT the absolute value of both numbers and keep sign of LARGER absolute value number. (DIFFERENT SIGN SUBTRACT.)3. Line up the decimals and numbers according to their place value.
