Fungi are a large diverse group of organisms that are often overlooked due to their cryptic nature. Many species evolved in close association with vascular plants, resulting in interesting plant-fungi and plant-fungi-insect interactions.

On Monday March 5 at 6:30 pm in the Klamath County Museum conference room, retired Forest Service botanist Sarah Malaby will give a presentation on some of these interactions, including fungi that mimic flowers, plants that parasitize fungi, and endophytic fungi that provide protection to their plant hosts. The presentation is free and everyone is welcome to attend. A business meeting will follow the presentation. For more information, please contact the museum at 541-882-1000.

Crater Lake National Park The road from Steel Visitor Center to Rim Village is now OPEN. Please use caution when driving to Crater Lake National Park. You must carry chains or have winter traction tires installed on your vehicle. The combination of snow packed roads and heavy snowfall with winds may make driving conditions challenging. Be advised that our snow plow operators will be working on the roads and may have reduced visibility due to the weather.

Tax season is upon us! The downtown Klamath County Library and Chiloquin branch library are hosting free tax help from February 7th through April 11th. A Spanish language interpreter will be available at the downtown library to assist taxpayers who primarily speak Spanish. Every Wednesday from 10 am to 5 pm in Chiloquin, specially trained tax aide volunteers from AARP will be on hand to help with your tax preparation needs. You do not have to be a member of AARP (or even a senior citizen) to take advantage of this assistance – taxpayers of any age can drop in. Time with the tax counselors is by walk-in only (it’s best to come early!). Some restrictions may apply; the tax aides may not be able to help with preparing certain types of tax returns. Please bring the following with you to your consultation: last year’s tax return, a photo ID, a list of Social Security numbers for yourself and dependents, and health insurance information for everyone listed on your tax return. (If you purchased health insurance through the Affordable Healthcare Act marketplace, bring the documentation “Form 1095A” you received from the government.) Both you and your spouse need to attend the consultation if you’re filing your taxes jointly. For more information, please call the downtown library at 541-882-8894 or the Chiloquin library at 541-783-3315.

Walking On... In Memory of Elder James "Jimmy" David

LAKEVIEW, Ore. — The Bureau of Land Management is offering a series of guided tours of sage brush steppe areas during the upcoming sage-grouse breeding season. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how the Greater Sage-grouse serves as a barometer for rangeland health while also witnessing their fascinating springtime courtship rituals. The Bureau of Land Management is committed to keeping public landscapes healthy and productive, in part by managing the sage brush steppe for a variety of uses, including ranching, hunting, mining and energy development. The sage-grouse breeding season, also known as lekking, takes place for only four to six weeks in early spring at gathering sites called leks. Sage-grouse come to approximately 100 lek sites across Lake County to perform their courtship dance before breeding. Guided tours will be offered to the public on March 10 and April 7, 2018. Viewing is limited to 20 people per tour in order to minimize the potential for disturbance to the sage-grouse. Reservations are on a first-come, first-serve basis. To reserve a spot, contact Larisa Bogardus at 541)-947-6237 or [email protected] by noon on Friday, March 9, for the March 10 tour or by noon on Friday, April 6 for the April 7 outing. Viewers will depart at 6 a.m. from the BLM Lakeview District Office, 1301 South G Street, in Lakeview, Oregon. Carpooling is encouraged. Transportation may be provided depending on the number of participants, who should dress appropriately for field conditions. Sturdy, broken-in boots/shoes are encouraged, as participants will encounter rocky, rugged terrain, with sagebrush and rocks. Additionally, tours will require a hike of up to a half mile. There are no amenities and no restrooms. Participants should also plan to bring plenty of water, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

This is the location of the confluence of the Rivers. They will be traveling on these waters.

Students form a traditional friendship design on the beach beside the confluence of the Baker and Chacabuco Rivers in Chile.

They have arrived safe and sound! Friendships that formed on the Klamath River last July have re-united here in Patagonia. Ashia Wilson, Klamath Youth Council President, and her brother Paul, along with several others left for Chile' on February 19th, 2018. Keep the students and the advisor's in your prayers for a safe, fun, and educational journey as they travel to learn more about the Ríos to Rivers program, and to discuss about threats and restoration opportunities to the rivers of Chile and the Klamath Basin! Last year the Chile' students and lower river tribal youth, had the opportunity to explore the Klamath River Watershed. The time everyone took to teach the students about the Klamath Watershed made this program a full and memorable experience to all the participants.

Hi Everyone! One week ago today, we arrived at the Santiago Airport. We were met by Weston and from there we traveled east of Santiago to Cajon de Maipo, the major watershed that supplies water to about seven million people who live in the greater Santiago area. We met up with a new group of students from the Bio Bio River in south central Chile, who would be joining us in Patagonia for our journey. We hiked high into the mountains to where glaciers feed the very top of the watershed, we met with a professor of sustainable energy, and learned about the current and proposed hydro-power projects in the Maipo Watershed that would de-water the majority of the river. After two very full days in the Maipo, we traveled back to the Santiago Airport and boarded a plane for Patagonia. This was the first time that any of the Bio Bio group, including their group leader, had ever been on an airplane, and we were lucky enough to have good views of the high mountains and lakes of Northern Patagonia from the air. We landed in Balmaceda, the airport that serves central Chilean Patagonia, on Friday afternoon. We took an hour and a half bus ride to our camp in Villa Cerro Castillo, a small hamlet on the Rio Ibanez that sits at the base of one of the most stunning peaks in Chile. The next morning we continued in the bus to Cochrane stopping along the shores of Lago General Carrera for lunch, and taking a hike to a very large and impressive waterfall at the confluence of the Rio Baker and Rio Neff. We arrived to Cochrane in the late afternoon and we were welcomed to our camp on the shores of the Rio Cochrane by our Chilean friends who were on the Klamath with us this past summer. They have taken us hiking along the Rio Baker, treated us to a traditional Chilean Asado (lamb roast), and they are currently taking the students snorkeling and kayaking on the Rio Cochrane, right from our camp.

Days have been sunny and warm and nights crisp, as we prepare for our six day trip down the Rio Baker. This afternoon we will pack our dry bags and shuffle rafts, kayaks, inflatable kayaks, personal gear, and lots and lots of food, to the put in of the Baker River, below the last of the large canyon rapids. Tomorrow morning we leave cell service behind and will experience the wilderness of Patagonia that few people travel through, including sections of Rio Baker that were saved from a series of mega dams just months ago. Everyone is excited to set out on the journey down river, to see more of Patagonia, to meet the Gauchos that live along the shores of this remote river, and to continue to build their friendships. I can promise you all that your kids will come back speaking more Spanish, and with a very special place in their hearts for the rivers and people of Chile.

A rare snowstorm hit Rome on February 26, 2018, causing severe traffic disruption and forcing authorities to shut down schools and tourist attractions. Snow fell on Italian capital for the first time in six years today in what authorities described the largest snowstorm to hit the city at the end of February in decades. As winds from Siberia pushed temperatures to extremely low levels across Europe, Italian capital, which is not equipped to deal with snow emergencies due to their rarity, received enough snow to have its traffic disrupted and schools closed. So much, in fact, that it had to ask other areas to send in snow plows to help clear roads. Read more

Greenland's northernmost weather station reported bizarre warmth in recent days as a heat wave grips the Arctic. The recent wave of warm weather has brought temperatures almost 40

degrees above average. That means some areas are spending several days above freezing when they should be below zero. The Danish Meteorological Service said temperatures on the evening of Feb. 18 warmed 39 degrees in four hours at the Greenland weather station and then remained warmer than freezing through Feb. 20, the report added. Sea ice had already been trending far below the 1981-2010 median amount, but now, it has dipped to record low levels at times in 2018. It's far from a slight tick below average – the Arctic would need to have 525,000 square miles of ice added to get back to normal. Parts of Alaska's North Slope are also trending 40 degrees or more above average as that region of the state bakes in unusual warmth. According to Inside Climate News, the Bering Sea just lost a third of its ice in eight days. This is the warmest the Arctic has been in upwards of 1,450 years, scientists who study the region's history have concluded. Read more

Landslides and damaged roads have made it impossible to reach the worst-affected communities in isolated areas. Many people are thought to be living under canvas roofs in the rubble of damaged buildings. There have been dozens of aftershocks, including a 6.0 quake on Sunday. Local reports say dozens of people have been killed but there has been no official confirmation. "The challenge is road access; it's still not accessible to trucks and four-wheel drives," Udaya Regmi, of the International Red Cross, told Reuters news agency. "Big trucks cannot go there. It's one of the reasons the food is becoming less and less. There are no fears of starvation yet but we've not got the full picture." Read more

Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) in South Africa by Rudy Böhmer

Aspidistra elatior is a popular houseplant, known as the

“cast iron plant” for its ability to withstand neglect.

It can be found growing all over the world, but is indigenous to southern Japanese islands. Its purple,

fleshy flowers bloom directly above the soil, almost burrowing into the ground and often hidden by leaf

litter. Their appearance has been compared to mushrooms – one of the foods of choice for the fungus

gnats that visit these flowers.

Boston has joined the ranks of major American cities that are taking steps to curb plastic pollution by banning single-use shopping bags. In addition to reaping the environmental benefits of banning single-use plastic bags, taxpayers are expected to save a little extra pocket money from city litter clean-up. Before California became the first US state to issue a plastic bag ban in 2014, Los Angeles County, San Francisco, and other Californian communities had already issued plastic bans. Other major cities and regions that have issued similar legislation include Portland, Oregon and coastal North Carolina. In addition San Francisco passed legislation in 2017 banning the sale of foam food and retail products in order to protect the environment from further pollution. Foam does not biodegrade and crumbles easily over the time, causing harm to sea creatures and the Bay area aquatic ecosystem. Similar legislation has been enacted in places like New York City, but the ban has been declared the toughest anti-foam law in the country.

March 24 Annual Return Of C'waam Ceremony

Along the banks of the Sprague River, in Chiloquin, Ore. the C'waam Ceremony is held each year after the first big Fish-Blanket snow in March when c’waam (also known as the Lost River Sucker) swim up the Sprague River to spawn.

Traditions of the Klamath Tribe state that watchmen or swaso.llalalYampgis were placed along the riverbanks to see exactly when the fish would return. The head “shaman” would then give thanks for their return to the Indian people. The last known shaman to perform the ceremony was Lee Snipes – Captain Sky, perhaps in the early 30’s.

The Klamath Tribe celebrate each year with traditional dancing and drumming, a traditional feed, releasing of a pair of c’waam into the river, and other ceremonial practices. The c’waam are provided by the Tribes own aquatic research center.

Everyone is Welcome! There are no animals allowed at the ceremony and only approved photographers are allowed to film the ceremony (The cremation segment is closed to all filming and cameras).

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Evening volunteer: The library is open until 6pm on Tuesdays, Weds and Thursdays. We would really appreciate a volunteer who could help us out with closing tasks for the last hour or so on these days (especially Tuesdays). 2. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. 3. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 4. Honor collections: These are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 5. Help with sorting donations. 6. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.
