IT’S A COMMUNITY WIN!

Mahalo, Maui, for helping QKC win the prestigious International Council of Shopping Center’s 2017 Gold Maxi Award! It was my honor to represent QKC in Las Vegas at the annual ICSC Re-Con Convention where over 37,000 retail real estate professionals from 58 countries participated. Among hundreds of nominees, QKC was the only neighbor island shopping center to be a finalist for a Maxi Award. QKC was nominated for the December 2016 “Let it Snow” holiday program— and we brought home the gold!

Over the course of “Let it Snow,” more than 24,000 residents and visitors celebrated the holidays under festive falling “snow.” In addition to sleigh rides, Santa, and the magic of the season, more than 26 nonprofit organizations participated; 1,300 holiday angel gift packages were donated; and over 1,000 toys were collected for our keiki. The community donation value was more than $210,000, and we have you to thank for that.

QKC’s owners and management are honored and grateful to the Maui community and remain committed to creating memorable experiences with you. To celebrate this community win, QKC will host a Mahalo Party on Saturday, July 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Consider yourself invited.

Meet champion water woman Andrea Moller and her 13-year-old

daughter, Keala. To say Andrea is a force of nature would be an understatement. A mother, paramedic, big wave surfer, windsurfer, standup paddler, outrigger canoe racer, swimmer, mountain biker and self-confessed adrenaline junkie, she defies conventional definition. “I don’t like to sit still,” she laughs. “I’m always pushing it to the next limit.”

Andrea was born and raised on the tiny Brazilian island of Ihlabela (Portuguese for “beautiful island”), with a population of a few thousand, one paved road and no stop sign. But she never suffered from small town boredom; by the time Andrea was in high school, she’d racked up her fair share of medals in competitive swimming, mountain biking and windsurfing.

In 1997, at the age of 18, Andrea’s passion for windsurfing led her to pack her things and move to Maui. “Maui is the windsurfing capital of the world, so coming here was a dream come true,” she says. To pass the time during the offseason, she learned how to surf, and later, added standup paddling and canoe paddling to her athletic repertoire. Andrea became so proficient at surfing that, in 2004, she made history as the first female to paddle in at Jaws. “I won’t allow anything to limit me,” she says. “If there’s a barrier in front of me, I’ll move it.” And the world has taken notice: Since her Jaws debut, Andrea has surfed some of

the biggest waves on Earth and has won countless titles, records and awards.

When she moved to Maui nearly twenty years ago, Andrea says there were plenty of things to marvel at—and one of them was the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center. She recalls being awestruck by the center’s distinctive roof, which reminded her of a windsurfing sail. “I’d never seen anything like it before,” she says. “I was instantly drawn to it.” Andrea

says Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center also gave her a taste of big city life. “I knew I could shop, grab a bite to eat or see a movie whenever I wanted,” she explains. “That was a luxury I never had growing up.”

Today, Andrea is still proving that women have a place in competitive big wave surfing and continues to take on any challenge that comes her way—both in and out of the water. For the past six years, she’s worked as a full-time paramedic, a job that can be as unpredictable and adrenaline-inducing as the Jaws surf break.

When she’s not saving lives or conquering big waves, you might find Andrea and her daughter at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center shopping for Maui Jim sunglasses and surfwear at Local Motion or helping Keala pick out art supplies at Ben Franklin Crafts. “We love coming here,” Andrea says. “It’s the perfect place to spend time and have fun together.”

Get ready for some big changes at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center. There are plenty of surprises in store for you. This year, the

center will get a refresh, and as you’ll soon see, there’s more to this makeover than meets the eye.

“I design with intention,” says Kristin Holmes, lead designer and owner of Swan Interiors Maui. “For Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, I found inspiration in the natural surroundings,” she says, noting that the west concourse faces ‘Iao Valley, the east faces Haleakalā, and the north and south concourses point toward the ocean.

Using these geographic markers, Kristin created a design that called for the north and south concourses to be awash in ocean blue;

the west forested with green; and the east infused with yellow. “The palette changes geographically,” she explains. Walk from the center court to Sears and take in the colors of a crater sunrise; head toward Macy’s and bask in the coolness of ‘Iao Valley; wander into the food court and get a taste of the ocean. “There are many points of interest,” Kristin says. “Some are subtle, others are more obvious, but every detail is meaningful.”

One obvious point of interest is the food court, which Kristin transformed into a cool, calm ocean oasis. “We wanted to recreate the feeling of being on the beach,” she says. Divided into two enclosed, air-conditioned halls—named Moana Po‘e (“the sea”) and Ala Honu (“turtle’s path”)—the updated food court will greet visitors with an eye-

catching mural of a wave cresting over the entryway. Inside, noise-absorbing acoustic wall panels, new tables and chairs, and blue metal umbrellas bring comfort and charm to the area. “It’s fashionable and functional,” Kristin says. Even the roofline got an aquatic redesign; the center’s superstructure was painted blue to emulate the feel of the ocean and complement the sail-like roof.

Just beyond the doors of the food court, cushioned rockers and cozy seating nooks will line the overlook, and ample lounge seating can be found throughout the upper and lower levels. Comfort is key in Kristin’s design: there is no shortage of places to sit and relax; tables, chairs and colorful metal umbrellas are recurring features on both levels. Other touches include strategically placed cell phone charging stations, custom waste bins and bike racks. “There’s a different experience in every area,” Kristin says. But no matter which direction you take, one thing remains the same. “It’s a happy, inviting and uplifting place.” Kristin says. “That’s exactly what Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center is all about.” QKC

QKC is proud to share and honor the name of Maui’s

beloved Queen Elisabeth Ka‘ahumanu, who played a pivotal role in Hawai‘i’s history. In fact, for a time, she was the most powerful figure in the Hawaiian Islands. Born near Hana on March 17, 1768, the young Ka‘ahumanu was playful, strong and brilliant. In 1778, she married King Kamehameha I and soon became his most trusted adviser.

After her husband’s death in 1819, Queen Ka‘ahumanu became kuhina nui (prime minister) and ruled with Kamehameha’s son, King Liholiho. In the years that followed, she con-vinced King Liholiho to abolish the ancient kapu system, made educa-tion a national priority and passed many laws based on her newfound Christian faith.

When the young King Liholiho died of measles (which he contract-ed in London), Queen Ka‘ahumanu became sole regent over Hawai‘i until her death in 1832. Throughout her reign, she remained a beloved and respected monarch.

QKC honors Queen Ka‘ahumanu’s legacy by providing educational opportunities to generations of kama‘āina and celebrating the Hawaiian culture with residents and visitors through events and programs here at the center. QKC

October is Filipino-American History Month, a time to celebrate and recognize Filipinos’ contributions to the United States since their first documented arrival in Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587. It’s hard to imagine Koho Grill & Bar ever being the new kid on the block. But the restaurant was an unknown when it opened its doors thirty years ago at

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center. And yet, there were no first-day jitters. That’s because Koho Grill & Bar had two secret weapons: a stellar staff and a well-vetted menu. Months before the grand opening, Koho Grill & Bar owner Roy Dunn developed a restaurant concept using a simple strategy: ask the customers what they want. “We set out to create a concept based on community input,” he says. “It was important for us to know what people wanted.”

With that in mind, Roy and his team gathered as much feedback as possible, surveying friends, neighbors, Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center employees, and community members. They asked them what they’d like to see on the menu, as well as their preferences regarding pricing and ambiance. The result? A family-friendly restaurant that proves delicious doesn’t have to be pricey. “We built the menu around our customers’ tastes and budgets,” Roy says. “Our goal was to offer generous portions at friendly prices.”

It wasn’t long before the restaurant became a household name, known for its casual neighborhood spirit, top-notch

service, tried-and-true dishes—and those catchy radio jingles. “Koho’s,” as it is affectionately called, soon became a go-to gathering place for families, retirees, college students, doctors and nurses, firefighters and police officers, local government employees and elected officials—and remains so today. “We really enjoy being a part of the community,” Roy says. “That’s a source of pride for us.”

Roy credits the restaurant’s continued success to his managing partner, Gerri Eckart, and the staff, many of whom are longtime employees (three have been there since day one.) “It all starts with the

staff,” he says. “They are the ones who make it happen.”

The restaurant business can be tough, but Koho’s has stood the test of time, simply by being true to itself. Apart from remodeling the interior last year, little has changed over the years—and any of Koho’s loyal patrons will tell you that’s a good thing. “I think we’d be in trouble if we took anything off the menu,” Roy laughs.

Thirty years after making its official debut, Koho’s is still going strong. “It’s been a fun adventure,” Roy says. “We are looking forward to the next thirty years.” QKC

This performance is a prelude to the Kū Mai Ka Hula (“hula appears”) competition, which will be held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) September 7 through 9. all are welcome to attend. Now in its twelfth year, Kū Mai Ka Hula,

Maui’s only adult hula competition, brings award-winning hālau from Hawai‘i, the continental U.S. and Japan to the MACC’s

Castle Theater. Contestants will perform both kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (modern) hula stylings, and they will be judged by renowned kumu hula.

The three-day event begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, with special demonstrations and lectures led by hula experts. “It sets the tone for the weekend,” says Kū Mai Ka Hula competition coordinator Moani Whittle-Wagner. “If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about hula, this is a wonderful opportunity to do it. It’s a truly unique experience,” she says. The competition kicks off on Friday at 6 p.m., with male and female contestants vying for the solo title of “Mr. Hula Maui” and “Miss Hula Maui,” followed by group competitions on Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m.

“Every competition brings something dif-ferent,” says kumu hula, educator and cultural practitioner Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla, who found-ed Kū Mai Ka Hula twelve years ago. “It changes every year,” she says. “There are many combina-tions and possibilities, but it’s all high quality.”

Kū Mai Ka Hula is presented by the MACC and Kauahea Inc., a nonprofit organization that Hōkūlani established in 1995 to foster a more vibrant learning environment for Hawaiian culture. With the long-term goal of building and supporting a Hawaiian learning center on Maui, Kauahea Inc. creates opportunities for Hawaiian cultural practitioners to learn from, and network with, each other.

“Kū Mai Ka Hula will give you a greater understanding of hula excellence,” Hōkūlani says. “This is a chance to experience quality hula, right here at home.”
